This explains it :

Well, that explains quite a lot!

The Silent Generation are people born before 1946.

The Baby Boomers are people born between 1946 and 1959.

Generation X are people born between 1960 and 1979..

Generation Y are people born between 1980 and now.

Why do we call the last one generation Y?

I did not know, but a cartoonist explains it eloquently below...

I've also heard of them refereed to as the "trophy" generation. Insinuating everyone expects their children to be special and get a trophy for participation.

Holy crap I hate that. As a Scoutmaster I had to argue and fight against mediocrity rewards. If 50 patrols participated in a tri-district camporee (a competition of various scout skills) they would seperate all 50 into 3 groups and grant First awards, second awards and third awards. That's right, 3 places to 50 patrols. I argued that the top 3 get the 3 awards (kinda like life, go figure). they argued it wasn't good for morale or for their "spirit" to be deemed substandard. I can sorta see that, but imagine how devalued that "First Place" ribbon is to the 12 "First place" patrols.

Unfortunately this is running rampant. There are some school districts where showing up and turning in homework (even if it is completely wrong) will render a C grade.

Talk about dumbing down America. I think I really do have job security in the long run.

/Rant off.

I'll try to fix it but I make no promises that I'll end up with the actual picture that MonzaRacer wanted to post.

This thing about everyone is a winner is the BIGGEST BS ever invented. These kids don't learn anything about the real world. These TROPHY kids are hitting the work force now. Employers are up in arms at how untalented, unmotivated, selfish, childish, stuck on themselves, and rude they are. It's breeding a bunch of imbecile's. Real life is winners and losers. Losers strive harder when they don't have a trophy in their hands. Don't get me started!

That is what I have heard too. 1964 is the last year for the baby boomer.

Yeah, but what did our elders say about us when we hit the work force?

OK WS6 that make you and about 14 or 15 other of the GenY group and I still like to tell them to pull their damn pants up, was funny when a guy had his pants down to his knees and walking around and after I told him he got hostile, then cop told him if he saw ANY part of his boxers again he was going to jail for indecent exposure, and the guy still argued.
I then asked him when he had been in jail and how he liked being the prison bitch.
His girl, friend or what ever, with him asked what I was talking about, and I told her it was a sign of "power" and weather the inmate wanted "carnal relations" as to how big, baggy and low the pants get worn, then she looked at him and said he needed to pull his pants up from now on.

You read that in a fwd'd email didn't you? It would be a cute/funny story if it were true. But it isn't.

Yes the "fashion", such as it is, originated in prison. But it has nothing to do with homosexual behavior, male/male prostitution, prison rape or any other schadenfreude you wish to avail yourself of. Your surreptitious delight at the joke being on them is soundly unwarranted.

Prison officials don't allow most med/high security prisoners to have belts and shoelaces lest the prisoner wind up swinging from the end of them. Thus, the pants sag. Sagging pants outside of prison was originally a signal to other cons that someone had been "in" and was thus worthy of their respect. More subtle and easier to conceal than a tattoo and a convenient thumb in the eye to "the man" when he scoffed at the silly "fashion statement." It got picked up by rappers and the next thing you know...... sagging pants at bar-mitzvahs.

I get up every morning and go to work. Not sure what's lazy about that?

When you start looking at younger generations and the "problems" associated with them it just means you're really getting old!!

Hey Damn true, better go ask the guys FROM prison, it was confirmed that the guy who had more "control" on the inside, could get larger pants as they could get laundry duty, and hence some connection to the outside to smuggle in stuff, and yes a lot of those guy got/gave "favors". Used to work with a guy who was a high security prison guard, he also confirmed several points I made.
Dont get me wrong, its not rampant everywhere but several years ago there was a list of the top 10 "hot" spot high security prisons that back when different jails "swapped" or "sold" inmates because of the money they made the jail, but sometimes they made enough enemies they had to be moved.
Tommy, my friend who used to be a guard said they had a guy who liked getting "traded" before government stopped all of it, as he got to meet many of his "friends" ,,,yes he was lifer and basically gay in system.
Just info from a person who was in there keeping these vermin undercontrol, and they also made them pull their pants up, wear right size clothes, stuff like that. Its not the thing to do but a moderate core of inmates DID use it as status, kind of like rappers needing more gold jewelry, bigger rings and such.
Besides still so stupid to see a teen ACTING LIKE A EX-CON.
I ask several where they did time.
I used to work in Bedford Indiana (where limestone came from to fix Pentagon) and at the Goodyear I worked at, fella came walking down sidewalk, step ,hitch, step, hitch, so on and so forth.
Well ,big ol tattooed, balding red headed kid, he runs out and pants the guy , right there with 2 girls walking with him, they just cracked up, we did to in the shop.

As an old guy ( over 40 ) I'm embarrassed to admit I do sag my pants. But only when I'm running to the bathroom.

My son just started school this year and has zero expectations of reward without effoert. REAL effort. The other kids in his class are not on the same page as him. He calls them the "naughty kids" because they cry when they don't get the reward for finishing last.

Now back to the original posters intent... THAT was very funny!!

I wear my pants baggy just because I'm not interested in squeezing big Al and the boys but mine are respectable and acceptable in terms of looseness. These morons walking around with there pants strapped to their thighs so they don't fall to the ground look ridiculous. How that's looked at as being fashionable or cool is beyond me. I guess I'm getting old, lol.
