Does my 05 Silverado have the Gen IV? I was looking underhood today, and noticed I have the "drive by wire" instead of a throttle cable. Are there any other ways to tell if I have the IV or III? Also, if I do have the IV, how can I tell if it has the DOD (Displacement on Demand)or not? Thanks guys, as I am going to make some changes to my truck, and just want to know what motor I am dealing with before I get ahead of myself, as I just assumed I had the Gen III until I saw the drive by wire, and got me wondering.

Gen III as decribed in GM '05 line up for related engine packages. DOD is also explained.

OK, I do have the Gen III, but what is weird, is this. According to Hot Rod magazine, and PHR, and Car Craft, I should have a throttle cable, and a return line for my fuel system. Well, I have the drive by wire, as described by being on the Gen IV, and I have a returnless fuel system setup, as described by the above magazines as being on the Gen IV, but not the Gen III. The way that I determined that I have the Gen III, is the above link, and also looking at my timing chain cover, on the Gen IV, the Cam Position Sensor is located on it, which mine is not there.

My 03 Gen III from a Chev 2500 has the drive by wire set-up like your truck. I'm almost positive your truck has a return line. Should be right next to your feed.

I was looking for it this morning, did not look REAL hard, but was snooping around, and did not notice it. I will look again, but I am pretty sure it is not there. I only noticeed one line coming up from the drivers side of the motor, and then crossed over the top of the manifold to feed the passengers side of the motor.
