We are all impressed by performance numbers, myself included. So when I see what my boy can do I am just amazed.
Well Tuesday Oct 13th he tanked hard again. Full status elipticus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Status_epilepticus, fever of 105 and tested positive for H1N1. The result, in ICU in a coma and fully supported on ventilator.
Morning of Oct 16th he sat up and through tubes and wires said very slowly & groggily " Daaaaad"?
Evening of Oct 16th off ventlator and moved to ward.
Morning of Oct 18th off feed tubes, wires, monitors etc.
Morning of Oct 19th going home.

All at the hospital who cared for him marvel at his incredible recovery ability. As usual the ICU team and ward staff were top notch, can't say enough about people who help you take your child home again.

We had quite a roller coaster ride on this round with very long days of vigilance. When my mind was not on him or family I was thinking; when this is all over and the Nova is back together it shall suffer the wrath of my stress and emotion....again :drive:There has been many a day after these ICU trips that I have been alone in the Nova, tears in my eyes, hammering through the gears thinking" ok girl lets see what you can take this time" I figure my yearly breakage/repair costs from these sessions would be about the same for therapy  lol.

He is still a bit wobbly but will soon be puttering around in the garage with me on the Nova winter projects.:D

It's good to hear he's doing well.
I have two of my own, a step daughter, and two grandchildren. It has always amazed me that the most vulnerable are also the most resilient.

And since when did BC start getting winter? LOL

Awsome news. Is there any underlying problems or was it just the swine that got to the little guy?

Great news that he is home. Thoughts and prayers to you and your family. My son has a seizure disorder and there is no more helpless feeling in the world than sitting there watching him go through a seizure. Then an hour after its over he is fine and mom and I are still basket cases. Take care and good luck!

Amazing! I'm glad to hear he pulled through. How long ws he sick before you had to take him to the hospital? Do you think you know where he picked up the H1N1? Having kids must be scary. My wife almost died from pneumonia a few years ago. That was scary enough. When her fever wouldn't stay down, we went to the hospital. They sent her home with antibiotics and over the next few days it got much worse. We went to our GP. He flipped when he checked her lungs. The hospital didn't check her well enough. The GP sent us directly to the hospital from his office. She was there for a week. The GP said she was less than 24 hours from death.

He has intractible epilepsy since 18 months old, global developmental delay due to seizures. Not sure where he picked up the N1H1.

Thanks for all the well wishes.

Thank God he's out of the woods. What a tough little man!
Those first pics scared the crap out of me, I cannot imagine what you all have been through in the last few days.
You all are strong, and ain't no wimps, specially the little man.
Go get some ice cream, or something! Family cruise time.

Wow, I can't (and don't want to) imagine. Praise God he is well!

This makes me really think about the vaccine for our two kids 4yrs and 8 months old. I talked to the doctor about it today, she reccomended it, but I am still on the fence. But this makes me definately lean!

As you already know he means more to you than you ever thought imaginable. Now with any hardship it multiplies..... you will be a better parent and person with every issue you survive. I know this all to well myself and I feel for you and your family and only hope that you cherish every tender moment you have with him.

With the way our lives are and all the distractions thrown in our face on an hourly basis anymore it is a stark reality check when something like this is thrust upon you and you realize what trully is important. After something like this I'm sure you see life as a positive more often than a negative.

Impressive to say the least. I'm glad to hear he's doing better. I have a co-worker who just lost his daughter last Friday night to what they're saying was swine flu. From what I've heard it took all of one day to take her life. Her memorial service was last night and the burial was today. She was apparently at the hospital for 40 minutes before she passed. May she rest in peace.

That's the scary part about this damned flu. One person will be mostly unaffected by it and the next person could be gone in hours. It's as if it is a viral form of Russian Roulette.
Most other flu stains affect everyone the same way and to the same degree.

Steelrat we need an update! How is everything going.

My son is back at school doing well. His speech
and motor skills have been effected as resuilt of the status elipticus, it is trauma to the brain going through that event. He has been in ICU in this state at least a dozen times. This however was the first time he had to be on a ventilator. The events themselves are tough, but what they do to him is tougher. The trauma and abuse to his brain slowly erodes his skills/ability/communication. Each event takes a little more of him and who he is away.
He is a fighter. We are of English/Welsh/Irish decent and named him Caden. Which means "Spirit of Battle" .Little did we know how much he would live up to that name.

Fall is here, the Nova is apart, he is puttering about in the garage with me, but next spring he and I shall be in it again. When I pull hard through the gears he looks at me says "again" and smiles. :)

Keep hanging in there and we will keep praying for your family. And you're right about the name...my son's name is Kade and he just keeps fighting. He recovers from his seizures faster than Mom and I. Keep fighting Steelrat Jr.!!!

Steelrat, I shared the thread with my wife, and she got all choked up, poor gal.
If you were any closer, she would cook him some oatmeal. lol.
Thanks for sharing your story, it reminds us how fragile the balance can be, and not take things for granted.
God Bless your family, may angels watch over Caden, and keep him safe.

Before I read this thread I wasn't going to get my son the shot but this changed my mind and he got it today. He's had his troubles in the past but I don't know what I would have done if he was in your son's position. I'm glad to hear he's doing better.

Just a hats off to how great the car enthusiast community is. I am a member on Steves Nova site as well. We received a package with gifts for my 12 yr old son. Balls, puzzles shirts and stickers , with a card "Hope you are feeling better and this cheers you up". From your friends at Steve's Nova site
These gifts are perfect and are what he reallly loves. This act of generosity and suppport is very touching, and made me tear up upon opening the box. In October Caden was in ICU in a coma. Caden is a special needs boy, and has had his fair share of battles in hospital over the years. Acts such as this really help all of us get through these challenging times and let us know we are not alone with the support we have recieved from this site and Steves.

Thank you so much
Shaun & Family.
