guys, its been awhile but vinnys 68 camaro shocked, just went 9.98 at 138.47 in the 1/4 mile at atco drag way. Pretty unreal for a pro touring street car.
We will post video later of the run. heres a pic and stats

1.53 60 ft
[email protected] in the 8th
[email protected] in the 1/4 mile

This is on a 100 shot, his progressive controller died last week and he is on a wot switch, he spins coming out of hole with nx armed, so on his 9.98 run he armed it just after launch, lol Once new controller comes in he will run it on 200 shot but dial it in over a few seconds, should run 9.70s easy.

Looks like the wheel/tire combo was swapped. Was the suspension still PT? Adjusted the shocks, removed the front sway bar?

Nice runs.

Sway bar remains attached. The car has Air Ride Technologies suspension so the only hardware that gets turned are lug nuts. Every other component remains exactly the same as the Auto-X, street or road course set-up. Process is as follows:

-Swap Wheels/Tires and wheel spacers.
-Raise the rear to accommodate taller rear tires.
-Rebound of front Air Ride Shockwave adjusted to dead soft.
-Pre-load right rear bag as needed.

Hopefully, Vinnie can resist the 200 shot jets. Before this outing, peak oil pressure was down near 45 psi cold. You can only send a 496 big block up to 7000 rpm so many times before the bearings need freshening......

Wow....that is impressive! Way to go guys. My 489 has always had 50 psi max cold. It was built that way though. What's getting upgraded in the motor while it's apart?:1st:

:ssst: Shhh.... Please don't say "apart". It's probably better to say "disassembled" until he makes it back to the shop. The rest of the engine is rock solid. It just needs to be freshened.

Holy cr@p! That's BAD@$$! That's a sweet quarter mile for any car, but especially for a Pro-Touring car. I wonder if that's a record for a Pro-Touring car? Congratulations!

I wonder what's going wrong with the pressure. My 433 is like 90 psi max cold. A buddy had 45 PSI too, but his was like that from the get-go. He didn't notice during assembly, but a main cap nut was a tiny bit too big and was keeping the oil pump from seating against the cap surface.

yeah its been 3 years of abuse, so its time to check valve springs, mains and rods etc as it is more race motor then street motor.

it has a reg pump not hv. bearings are calico coated and were all sized at .0025
pressure is 45 cold at idle, and goes up to 55-60 at rpm which is about what it has always done, maybe 5-10 psi lower , its way cheaper and easier to freshen it then rebuild it.

engine hp is 680-700 flywheel, 530-550 rwhp
runs 10.60 flat at 131-132 on motor.

Sounds like plenty of pressure to me. Hot oil pressure at idle is where you will see your difference if you have bearing wear. Pretty radical setup, better safe than sorry I agree....

That's alright. No complaints. Big Blocks have heavy rotating assemblies. Cylinder pressure, rotating mass, rpm and frequency of abuse all conspire to hammer the bearings over time. In this case: 3 years and counting. The engine held up today. We are simply monitoring oil pressure because it's now lower than when the engine was fresh.

It's all perfectly normal for a street driven, road raced, autocrossed nine second hot rod that's driven by a maniac.

Congrats Vin!

Bias ply. Transmission is a Twist paddle shift Bowler 4L80E-1000 automatic built to 1000 Ft-Lb input torque capacity. Torque converter is our 10.5" MuscleDrive @ 3000 stall. We're working on a new converter with higher stall but same part throttle capabilities. That plus a progressive 200 shot of nitrous and I believe this car will go 9.70's in the spring.

Excuse the overflowing pride. This car's accomplishments are:

Vinnie, Steve, and all the guys that support this car...CONGRATULATIONS!

You make our stuff look great! I would love to point to the air suspension as being largely responsible for this accomplishment but have to admit my own car is still about 2 seconds slower!
You also make our sport look great. The real accomplishment here is your perserverence in tuning this combination into what you wanted it to be. [If I remember, you'se guys call it "balls"].

Keep takin it to em!

PS: At this point you may consider welding the AirBar into the car. I have not tested the fastening method at this level. :)

Race weight for that day was 3750 including driver. RWHP is 595 with 100 shot. Others involved with the car will swear 650 RWHP, but whatever.

Best part is it does it with stuff everybody swears will never work in a PT car such as a BBC and Air Ride. Throw some billet stuff on there it would be good for a couple 1/10's

Nasty car!!!

Steve Chryssos
10-21-2009, 05:01 AM
As for the awesome vid:
-Listen to the stage rpm. As a pro-touring car, the torque converter has a very low 3000 rpm stall speed. There are not many sub 10 second cars using low stall converters.
-Despite having such a tight converter, listen to how quickly the engine accelerates after launch.
-Lastly, engine speed is 7200 rpm thru the traps. Carry the two... That means Vin's car has a very usable 4200 rpm power band. Typical drag cars are happy with 3000 rpm power bands.

Vinny IS a good driver.
I could see you guys making a get-away ( all sideways and ***** )

I remember that weekend at RTTH4 ?? .
A lot of vapor-locking issues (with various cars )because the entire area had been shipped a bad supply of fuel from the reserves due to the hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico.
Vinny was on a mission that weekend !!!
He made it to the dragstrip and made his official pass with 1 second to spare !!
Amazing !!

Impressive runs, but us drag racers KNOW that 595 RWHP does not run 9.98.
At any rate its still a super car , handles, and runs good 1/4 et's.
So what if it makes big rwhp number? Besides who cares about dyno numbers. The track and mph tells all. Now get more NOS on there !!!!!

FYI, I stall below 3k on a foot brake, and run 9.10's at 148 mph .

It's a plate system with 100 HP jets. Fuel is C12. With regards to flash, what you are seeing is the driver manually activate the N20. Just out of the hole. The progressive controller and WOT switch both failed. Flash varies with input torque, so it does flash higher with the nitrous. What you are seeing is the new 2.75 1st gear in the trans. It helps the car leave harder. You can compare with older videos in the link below. Second down on right is a 10.60 run on muscle.

Jason,
As of today, plan is to freshen bearings/valve springs, fix progressive nitrous controller, test experimental stators in the existing converter, run a taller tire and hit with 250 shot.

It would be nice to go 9.70's AND use the nitrous on the straights at the 2010 Motor State Challenge/Gingerman.

I know of 500 rwhp cars that have run 9s on motor alone. I think you meant to say that 595 rwhp is too low to trap 138 mph. Especially at 3,700 lbs. The 1.5 60' isn't that great in terms of full-on drag racing, so the car is definitely making some real power on the backend to trap 138. For example, my supercharged Viper with 3,600 lbs raceweight traps 135 mph....with 670 rwhp.

Nice work Vin. The combo works, regardless of dyno figures. I'd estimate you are putting down closer to 700 rwhp than you think ;)

ProdigyCustoms
10-22-2009, 09:03 AM
Agreed Tony. My street racer on a 100 shot runs 140MPH. With 100shot on my car on the dyno that is 650HP at the tires at 3400LBS. That is also a 9.55 at 138MPH with a 1.37 short time. So Vinny is running MPH good for 9.50s with is super impressive for any street car. let alone a Pro Touring car. And on Air is super cool. Makes me want to get rid of the ladder bars and put a Air Bar on the street racer, LOL!
