Hey guys.. well the 69 is now in its plush new home when it will be trailered around.. ahh, the good life..

But I have a certain 68 in Charolette NC that needs to come to CA.. I called my usual place (Exotic Car Transport) and was quoted at $1600 to bring it out.. one problem though.

3 to 4 WEEKS to do it. That is WAY too long.

So, anyone have any leads of other places that can do this and not cost a kings ransome?

Or.. anyone want to make a few bucks and bring the car out here for me :)

Has to be a company that uses enclosed trailers..

Thanks

I'd be more than happy to drive it out for you, but you'd have to pay for my speeding tickets. Then again, wouldn't that make for a good story in PHR? A view across the country in the eyes of a REAL Pro-Touring car. I'll drive while you hold the camera.

Tom at exotic is a good guy. I did some Mustang work for him 25 years ago when he was just starting the transport business. I have used him a lot over the years. He is always careful and might be worth waiting for. Reliable was always careful, but always a bit more expensive.

It's not the cost.. it's the delay. 3-4 weeks is too long. I will try Reliable.

Steve....in Michigan call Rapin's Bitchin' Super Car Haulers. They are dirt cheap....I am talking DIRT cheap. They can guarantee delivery in about 3 days (give or take a day or two for traffic violations, speed traps, gas stops, challenges from other hot rods, etc.).

No need to thank me, always happy to help out.

I used Autobahn transport to ship my car from Vegas to NY. I was happy with the service. No link though, sorry.

Steve,
I am looking hard at a car in Central Texas and may be headed that way shortly-as in Monday week. I am not that far from Charlotte and could bring it that far and let you help buy gas. If this interest you, let me know.

DAS fast clean service. Do not cheap out as you will be sorry in the end. Most Co's are just fronts on the Web using sublet trcuking Co's. I have shipped many cars and there is a lot of potential for problems. My Firebird arrived with about $3k in damages with Sattelite out of CA. Read the contracts VERY close. There is usually a line that explains they can pick up within weeks of their quoted pick up. Just used DAS from Utah to NY. Suburban $1200 open. You of course want enclosed. Have guy on other end take 35mm pics of every panel and pics with transport truck in background. Cheap insurance that will help with claim if needed. They have link off of EBAY. You can get quote just by entering your info. Probably the best shipper I ever used. But then again according to you I am a crazy person ! so what do I know?

Arn't we all a little crazy ;) I think I told you that when I typed that I didn't even know the person being described was you.. and the description sounded, well, crazy. Hell, I am pretty nuts myself :)

yea, am not going with the fly-by-nights.. That's why I posted, to get referals. I used Exotic before and was very happy but they are swamped right now. I should just do it myself or work it out with Howard.

It is better not to cheap out. I sent a friend of mine from WI to New Jersey for my 67 last year. My enclosed trailer, his truck, I pay him $500, he pays for gas. Too good to be true? Yep.

He decides he wants to shoot up to Albany to see his sister while he is out there. So he picks up the car and heads for New York. When he gets to his sister's town, he feels a vibration. Turns out all of the studs except for one on one of the trailer wheels had sheared off, luckily he was going slow enough so it did not come off. Of course it is on a Sunday. He takes an extra day and gets my hub replaced, and one of my aluminum wheels is ruined.

Monday comes and he is on his way. He gets near Erie, PA on the way back and his truck will barely move. After he gets the whole rig towed to a Dodge dealer, he finds out his rear end is shot. The dealer tells him he will probably be able to get home, but not with the trailer.

So there my trailer sits in North East, PA (an actual town). Two days later myself and another buddy road trip out to PA and back to rescue my car and trailer 21 hours straight through round trip. I should have gone and got it myself, or not cheaped out and sent this guy.

The guy gets his rear end fixed and comes and asks me to give him some dough toward the $1400 bill. I told him that's why I specified his truck and he pays for gas. In the end, I wound up giving him another $300 because I felt sorry for him.

The moral of the story is don't be afraid to pay for a professional.

It's not the pay.. it's the time :)

Hey Bill.. you gonna tool around the country with my car??? ;)

And to be fair, even if you would have gone to get the car the trailer mishap would still have happened..

I am still getting time quotes.. but it is tempting to do most of it myself.. 4 days round trip if you hot rack it there and back.

Call Don Kalin in Louisville Ky. Don is a retired Police Detective who hauls cars, one at a time, all over the country. Personal, door to door service and he is is fast. He was in Charlotte yesterday at the Charlotte Autofair.

Call him at 502 693 6466. He just returned from California delivering a car I sold.

Have you tried Intercity? We've always had excellent service/turnaround times dealing with them.

Takes time for them to get closer to a full load to make it worthwhile business wise. That sucks.

You're probably right about the trailer hub thing, but I know since I wouldn't drive a Dodge my truck wouldn't have broken down ;)

Just hoping others can learn from my mistakes.

The other thing you have to be sure of when hiring a smaller company is that they are insured properly, or make sure you have it insured-or both.

Good luck!

Steve,
You need to clean out your pm box! I guess business is good on the garage sale.
Things are on hold at the moment on the car I am considering. I will let you know if things change. :icon996:
BTW I was in the towing business for 12 years and others who have posted about that are absolutely right, Make sure whoever delivers it is properly covered. I have plenty of coverage, I just can not "tow for hire". That is why I said you can help with the gas not I would charge you a fee.
Hopefully my deal is not dead yet and we can still work this out. Oh, and you can have Tony's spare bedroom. I have seen his garage pictures and I am afraid if I was there overnight I would be tempted to bring an extra one home. :naughty:

Damn.. I was hoping you could do the Texas deal.. central TX is a LOT closer than NC :)

Let me know if it changes.. I have a few leads to check on Monday with reccomended transport companies..

2411 miles from me to my car.. lets see at an average speed of 65mph that is only 37 hours if you go non-stop.. It is also 160 gallons of gas at an optimistic 15mpg. @ $2.50 a gallon that is $400 each way for gas.

So in about 80 hrs and $800 in gas I could have the car here.. hmmm -- Worst case would be 4 days (96 hours) and $1000 in expenses.

Let me know Bill.. is the sticking point the cost of the car in Texas??

Hey Steve, well now figure $3.00 a gallon. I hope you get it here soon.

The price is one factor. The main reason though is the car is a nice one and I think he is wanting to try and hang on to it. I have been there myself, think about selling something then the more I would look at it the more I really wanted to keep it. His dad may want it too so he is trying to make a decision this weekend. Ironically, his dad lives in N.C. so there may still be a empty truck coming your way. I should know something tommorrow. I will let you know as soon as possible. Oh, I hate to rub it in, but gas is only $2.19 here today. Maybe the average across country would be around $2.50. Now you know why I jumped on this thread, might as well let you help pay my way out there anyway.

Edit: Sorry Steve, just got the news. Looks like the car will be staying in Texas for now. If there is anything else I can do for you other than bring it to you, let me know. If I got it here, at least it would be closer for you.
Someone mentioned intercity and when I was at Barrett-Jackson they had 15 or more trucks there. I have heard nothing but good about them so they would be a good option I think.
Again, Sorry I could not help more.
