View Full Version : Considering a color change HELP me pick
The Stickman

I am considering a color change on my car. Why? Because I am sick and tired of people thinking my car is a hearse! So, I have narrowed it down to FOUR choices.
The choices are... 1- Bright green, 2- Bright Yellow, 3- Blue, or 4- Gray, or 5- Should I leave it black?
BTW sorry for the cheapy photoshop jobs, it is the best my roommate could do on short notice, which is better than anything I ever could have done.

Grey. Specifically a deeper/darker metallic grey.

If you like it black, then leave it black.
I will never care enough about what someone else thinks of my car to change the color, or anything else on it for that matter.
I build 'em for my satisfaction only, I could care less what anyone else says about them.
If someone else likes what I'm doing with my car then that's just great.
Don't paint it another color unless you are tired of the black.

I voted for leave it black.
If you really want to add some color, spray from the beltline-down a silver or graphite, and add a pinstripe orange or red where they change over.
leave the top black.
It would be easy to change it back later if you want.

I initially liked gray first, but I like this idea better.

Well I do like the satin black. But I want people to see the car for what it is and that doen't happen when their first impression is of somethig else. And I do like all of these other colors. I had a 74 Nova with 1974 Corvette bright Yellow paint with black SS stripes. And I think these colors will show off the body better than black. I think the brighter ones will make it pop. And you will really see it coming. And it is just something I am tossing around and would be nice to see what other people think.

If the body is straight enough I'd go with gloss black instead of satin.
Whatever you do, don't paint it yellow. If you did you'd have people thinking it was an airport taxi instead of a hearse! :)

As the others have said, who cares what anyone else thinks about it. If YOU want to paint it, then do so. I voted keep it black, but if you want to do something else maybe do some kind of grey or silver and black scheme.
Personally I think it would be a shame to change it, it looks awesome the way it is and there's always gonna be rubes asking stupid questions regardless of the colour.
Instead of painting it, maybe come up with some good replies to their idiotic questions.
Examples:
Random idiot: "Hey man! Is that a hearse?!?"
You: "Yeah, why? You wanna ride in the back?"
Random idiot #2: "Hey man! Cool hearse! What's under the hood?"
You: "Sorry, no time to talk, gotta get to the cemetary before closing time."
I'm sure the looks on people's faces would be worth the idiocy of their questions.
Just a thought.

I say leave it black, but if you must add color go with the gray. Perhaps just get some colored pin striping done?

If you're goig to paint it something other than black, paint the posts black. Adding the body color between the windows doesn't work well on those cars. Black posts make the car look sleeker. Just my opinion.
I didn't try to do this mod, but it might look better if you lower the black rocker stripe a little between the tires.

I kinda like the blue but a nice charcoal color would be sweet also

I am way surprised no one has chosen bright yellow. This has always been a favorite of mine. I had a 74 Nova painted 1974 Corvette bright yellow with black SS stripes. And Not A TA was right last night on the PT chat. The black rockers to make it look higher off the ground. So I guess that part get's scrapped.
If you like it black, then leave it black.

Geez, When someone asks your opinion on a change, they don't really want all that extra commentary. That's not the first time you've done that on similar threads and its just annoying.. People are different, just deal with it already. :enguard:
I'll don my firesuit.....
<sorry for brief hijack>
Stickman, I don't see anything wrong with the black either, but if you're looking for a change I like that beige/sand color look the best of the 4 pics. It's subtle and I like subtle. A less intense yellow might work for me though, especially with you keeping all the blacked out action.

Sorry you find that annoying.
Perhaps next time you can spare us the drama and just make your comment on the subject at hand.

To be honest, I wasn't really digging any of those colors based on your "rendering", so I thought it would be fun to do my own photochop with these colors on the car, so here they are:

Still, I wasn't digging the colors, so I tried a couple others:

But I think my personal favorite might be something along the lines of a heritage 442/Hurst Olds gold like so:

Glad to... btw, I don't know if you noticed but I used the old render's trick and chopped a good 6" off the roof to get a more aggressive look. It'll still look good not chopped, but just so you know.

Hey Stickman,
Two tone would be good, Top half charcoal gray and bottom (and sides would look good black or Light n=metallic on top and charcoal gray on bottom & sides. Pin stripe red would set it off. Or how about a 25th anniversary Corvette paint scheme?

Lol! My car was called a hearse by a kid not too long ago and it's white! Lol! Must be a wagon thing. Another kid once said "Look at that funny sport utility truck!" Sad that the new generation has no concept of riding in a huge wagon, the feel of packing the family and the dog in and floating down the road in a 20 foot long 4500 lb car. Muscle cars look like "muscle" cars. Pony cars look lean and mean. Station wagons look like, well, family haulers. Hiding that stereotype and making one look cool I think is a little tougher task than say a Camaro or GTO.
I like the black post idea and had planned on doing that with my car, although I'm nervous how it might turn out. It may look doofy and out of place in the end, like I'm trying hard to hide the pillars, or it may look absolutely killer. I should be in paint around March/April so maybe look at mine before you try it.
Most important thing here is deciding what statement you're trying to make with the car. One of the first questions I ask clients before doing a rendering is what do you want people to feel or what do you want the car to say to people when they first see it? If you can establish that then you're one step closer to choosing just the right color. Asking the public will invite the opinions of what everyone else wants the car to say. So again I ask, what emotions do YOU want the car to bring out?
Since you asked, ;) here's my opinion- I think all pro-T cars should look aggressive. That's why for some reason a dark grey p-t car with black wheels always seems to look right at home. Dark colors make a car look smaller and lower to the ground.
Bright has a tendency to make things look larger and less aggressive. I think this car is too big to paint the whole car a bright color. I think the bright yellow and green look ok on a small sporty car like a 1st gen Camaro but on the bruiser cruiser I think it may look a little on the "I went out of my way to stick out like a sore thumb" and may be over bearing and possibly a little cheesy. I once read that light blue was the softest most serene color for a car. If aggressive is what you want stay away from it. My favorite car I used to own was a 73 4-door Nova that was powder light blue with blue steel wheels and factory baby moon caps. It looked like it was granny fresh but ran high 11s in the 1/4. I won plenty of street races because no-one could believe how fast it was. The color drove the whole sleeper thing home. White's probably not far behind on the soft and comfy scale.
I almost did the black and silver deal on my wagon but after looking at my rendering for a while I thought it looked too whimpy. Those two colors combined look very sophisticated together, like a titanium watch on the arm of a guy that's wearing a tux, not like get outta my way or I'm gonna tear your head off as I blow through the road course. The more I thought about it the more I saw that combo. I wanted to be different and look more aggressive, so I ultimately decided against it. It would look fantastic on your car if you like that sophisticated feeling.
I'm getting bored with cars that are painted all satin black. It was cool at first when it was different and only a few folks did it but now it just looks like the the car is unfinished IMHO. If you stick with satin black add a gloss contrasting color, or even cooler add a metallic contrasting color and spray a satin clear over it. Maybe black and Maroon, or Black and new Camaro obnoxious green, or black and dark green or... The black will bring the car lower to the ground and the strong contrasting color will be the in your face touch.
Check out this ride, it looks fairly aggressive.

This one not so much, even though it has a built 455 and is supposedly pretty quick.

You call your car the bruiser, will the paint color match? Good luck!

Thanx for the well thought out post. But the more I think about it the car only seems right in satin black. It will never see perfect paint. I know this. I am notorious for stratching my own paint while working on it. And I have always simply cared about what is under it than the coating of paint. And it was satin black before that fad took off s I know I am not following any crowd. I will simply wait out the fad until others find something else. But I do appreciate the Info.

There's an idea. How about doing something to go along with the satin black? Some nicely done flames may do it.
I certainly don't aspire to be an expert paint and body guy, first time I ever cracked a filler can was only 3 semesters ago. As a result I will be painting my car satin on the lower side, maybe hiding a few minor imperfections. But the top half of the car is relatively straight so gloss paint will go over well. Not to mention it'll be a daily driver so where all the abrasions will occur will be in the satin area and easily repaired. You're right, with the black wheels your car looks pretty killer all black, just suggesting you do something a little different by adding another detail or contrast. Again I say in the end it's what makes you happy that really counts. :)
