as the bills for my current project keep on staching up and as it will take another 15k to get my project to be a real pro touring car. The other day I got a wild hair up my butt and have more or less decided to start with a blank slate.
I'll be going to wyotech and taking classes such as chassis fabrication high performance engines etc so on top of my knowledge I think I could put something together.
What I am thinking is a tube chassis built to hold c5 (or c6 by then) mechanics (engine, transaxle, suspension, steering, wheels, brakes, etc) everything possible removed, ac, heat, anything thats powered that dosen't make the car go faster, more or less try and built a race car that will be able to be driven on the street without needing a complete overhaul after few miles. All while being on the smallest roadster I can fit myself and someone else into. In a nutshell a cobra kit car but not a cobra or a kit.
Im sure this would be a huge undertaking but thats what I like, but onto my question. Would this be pro touring, I would assume the answer is no because of its being a custom car, I figured now is as good a time as any to start planning and saving and I just dont know what the hell to call it, would it be some other thing ive just never heard of, or should I just make something up all I can think of so far is race street, and that dosen't really roll of the tounge.
Also if you want to start telling me what a stupid idea this is go for it, just seems like it would be more bang for the buck and knowing no one would ever have a car remotely like mine whereas it seems like lots of you guys have a pro touring first gen, though ive never seen one on the road, or often at car shows....

I'd say what your building there would fall into the realm of a modified kit car. As for Pro-Touring...it does somewhat involve existing iron like a '64 GTO or a '78 Monte Carlo thats modified with current technology. Yours may miss the mark on that technicality...but don't let that stop you. It doesn't have to be a Pro-Touring car to be cool. And what you're planning on building definitely sounds cool, bro.

Just a thought, but why not build that chassis in school to fit something. Then it will have some value when it is finsihed. If you are building a chasis, you could find a rusty undercarrige car resonable, that probably could only be fixed with a chassis, and keep you entry cost low.

I went there and I was not impressed at all 23,000 gone :hammer:
If you do go you probably won't have time to get a chassis done in chassis fab you get about a month and a half to work in the shop and you have to do a bunch of b**sh*t before htey will let you work on a project? PM me and i will tell you kind of what to expect!
boy you sure are bent on wyotech, give the guy a break! thats like standing in front of the Ford dealership and telling all the new mustang owners what kind of car they really bought :)

That is exactly what I plan on doing (except I won't get a chance to go to WyoTech first).
I plan (and have been desigining) to build a complete spaceframe design to stuff into a Datsun 240-280Z. Toying with the idea of using C5 front suspension pieces and building a satchell link type suspension out back. Drivetrain will be LS1 backed by a 5 or 6 speed manual... everything that isn't necessary to haul-booty will be eliminated (well... maybe I'll have power steering).

Personally, I think the idea of doing a tube frame race car for the street is somethign nobody should ever even think about. That is dangerous. ;)
OK, just kidding. Your idea sounds like a kick to me and if you go that light, you do not need a million and 5 HP to get the job done. If you are on a budget, ,ake up for dollar power with brain power- you have a solid idea here and I would bet dollars to dounts that there is more where that came from. Go for it is my vote.

There was a car that was a tube chassis street car from England I think, that was on here a few months back. The thread was from a Car show and it was about the car. how fast, cornering, yadda yadda. Any body remember that one? Real impressive car (if you could call it that.) It did not have a body (seriosly) But was all frame.

great idea but i would suggest saving it for a later date, how about doing some racing instead. pick out a suitable car, get to a road course and beat it to death learning as you go. you'll learn more racing than you will building and you'll most likely make some very knowledgable friends along the way. from the sounds of it youre in school and have the time to do it now where you may not have as much time when life ie real job family etc catches up with you. when they do then stay around home and fab up anything you desire.
may look into an outdated nascar or busch chassis that hasnt been wrecked too badly.
just my ideas

Prodigy-was planning on doing all this to my camaro but I finally decided it would be so much work modifying an old body to fit my goals it would just as easy to uild another much more areodynamic one
Ive been looking around researching different things to build into this project and it seems like quite a few guys are trying variants of this. Ive got years of learning, planning, desighning, and saving before I can start putting things together, however if executed right I could end up having a little car thatd beat the pants of damn near anything on the road, and track for that matter, just as long as i dont stray too far away from the goal.
Also I am in the process of joining the scca and hope to be doing some events and gain a further understanding. Today I was voted as the manager of our Auto shops racing team just about unanamously, since i maintain all the cars already,

I just want to say who cares what class it fits into, I hate that people classify cars, and I hate that I have to. The only thing it is good for is giving people an idea of the style of car. As far as I am concerned your car is “pro-touring” I am definitely not anyone, but do want you like and what you think is cool and you will be happy. That’s what this hobby is really about!
