Bought the '68 PT Camaro for $102k then Steve Davis goes over to his buddy who the car was promised to obviously and claims he had a late bid in too...trying to force more money out of the original bidder...who had already done his paperwork.
That was not right...and looked very staged.

I want to say 680 but I could be wrong,it was the blue PT '68 Camaro.
Guy had done the paperwork @ $102,suddenly Steve Davis is kneeling down by this new bidder, next thing they're asking the guy for $104,he told them to pound salt...that he already had bought it @ $102,handed Amy the paperwork and walked off.
She looked freaking stunned.
Wifey & I looked at each other and said huh...?
Good for him,I woulda done the same thing.

Sorry about the year...amd the lot #...I've had a cocktail or three.:smoke:
That looked totally staged though...smelled fishy to me.
BJ's story was that they both had $102k bids,...so while the one guy signed the papers,..the other guy was saying wtf.
still kinda jacked up and def. bad press.
I'm glad the 1st guy said "no way, he can have it at 103, I already bought it at 102" .....then walked away! Nice! :)

I have been to alot of auctions. You have to be careful. They will definately pull some shady tricks trying to get more money. I can't blame the guy for doing what he did. He should have made them let him keep the car at the price he bought it at.

10-10-2009, 07:37 PM
If I had bought anything else that weekend I would tell B-J to keep them too and walk out. From the looks of it, they did the guy a favor. I guess it was nice enough, but $102,000 nice? I couldn't see it.

I would have fought them: I have the paperwork right here!!
You have to be crystal clear when the buyer signs the paper they are obligated to pay, and the auction to transfer the goods purchased.
I have never purchased a vehicle at auction like that, but it would only seem straighforward, you give me papers, we sign, it is DONE.

What do you think would have happened if there was no 2nd bidder and the guy said "I changed my mind, I don't want it". ? Definitely one way...

So the guy in the crowd shouldn't get a chance to buy the car?
Could be a legitimate case of his bid just not getting recognized time.
Now if it was a phone or internet bid, I would be suspicious.

And no.. once the gavel drops and the guy signs the papers it's HIS car.. BJ wouldn't let you back out of a deal once you sign so it should work the other way as well.

Yeah, when the gavel drops and the papers are signed, done deal. If he really had a dog in the race up until then there should have been a big scene right then and there.

I'm in the car business and buy at auctions every week. These things do happen alot. I replayed it again and the guy bid 101k and the girl repeated it to the auctioneer. The other guy in the crowd bid 102k and should have been the rightful owner. The auction messed up and signed the wrong guy up, that's why they went back and fixed it.
buickfunnycar.com
10-11-2009, 12:01 PM
Quite possibly but the fact that Steve Davis was kneeling down by the guy leads me to believe he is a "buddy" and you know they can steer a car towards someone if they want to.
Like Steve Rupp said, they wouldn't reverse their decision if the shoe was on the other foot.
Signed paperwork and the handshake from Amy...done deal in my book.

the gavel fell and they announced the winner. that's basically end of story. he should have bid faster. besides, if he had HONESTLY had the bid in before the gavel, he would have made a stink right away.
i agree, the real winner should have said, i have paperwork, you want to give me 105?

nothing beats the drama a few years back when they sold the GM futureliner Bus for 4million ...anyone remember them selling it to wrong bidder...and when they went to the guy to sign the deal he said no way im not the high bidder...Jackson freaked out on him! and then when they went back to the video they realized he didnt bid what they thought...and the high bidder was actually ron pratt... then Pratt refused to pay too...later behind closed doors they signed the deal with Pratt

I watched quite a bit of the coverage since I'm on my first vacation in a while. I've come to the conclusion that you need to be pretty stunned to buy cars at BJ.
Who's the monkey with the head set that stands just out of view of the cameras while hiding his mouth behind a program?
It's also nice to see cars that don't even stop on the stage that get hammered at the first slight stall in bidding. I'd be pissed if that happened to me and then had to sit through 10 minutes of Craig Jackson etc. admonishing the buyers about how they should be ashamed for how little they're bidding for a yellow Jag with an SBC.
I just don't get it.

The folks that work the floor are not on commission. They are salaried employees of the auction co. In this case they work for Spanky.

One of the auctioneers that works at our auction has gone and worked as a ringman (bidder's assistant in Speed TV lingo) at Scottsdale for the past few years. Although he has not shared any figures, they are not paid as much as one would think.

Look what is for sale at that amount...If I was that guy I would be happy as heck and thanked BJ for helping me not making a huge mistake. That is not a $103k car. Come one!
I agree that the "Show" is getting a bit much. The Jay Leno deal, the mystery phone call, 2nd time for the Dukes car, etc..

They are independent contractors paid on a per event basis. Spanky hand picks the team through his contacts in the auction business. It is possible that B-J sublets the auctioneer/ringman service to Spanky for a lump sum then Spanky pays the individuals out of his end.
