Gun safe question....

I figured there was quite a few on here that would have a gun safe, so my question is: Do you prefer a gun safe with a digital code lock or the traditional dial, and why? My con for the digital is what happens when the battery dies, pain in the rear to change, & what if I NEED in it when the battery is dead?

Most have a key backup. I like the finger sequence safes for quick easy access.

Most will have a plug so you can plug it in to the wall

I like the dial personally. Its not like a school locker either, so many times you have to turn it in one direction then the opposite.

Also, when looking for safes, feel the inside edge around the door and see if its sheet rock or plywood, most companies do that to cut costs, I would look for one with steel wrapped all the way around. Another thing when looking for a safe. The "pins" that keep the door closed, when the door is open make the pins extend outward. If you can push them in with your fingers move to another safe. all a thief has to do it drill untill he finds and pin and bam hit it will a hammer causing the safe lock to fail.

Mine has a digital lock and the battery can be changed without opening the safe. It also has a special "burned in" code so that you can open it once you put a new battery in even if it has been dead for a long time.

I have a 1/4 thick steel one in my wall. It has a digital key pad with a key back up. I love it! its fast and easy to open. Im also going to buy one that uses finger print ID for me and my wife next to the bed.

We went to gander mountains tonight to look at them and I really like the ones that are like 3'x3'x5. Close to $2000. Is that good, high, average? It is one with lots of shelves and compartments for storing all kinds of stuff besides just guns. With a dial instead of keypad.

You may think I am joking but go to your local John Deere dealer! They sell Deere branded safes and when I bought mine there it was half price of the same safe at Cabelas or Bass Pro! Mine is made by Browning, which in my opinion is one of the best out there! You may even find someone who works there and get the employee price in exchange for a six-pack! lol

Scott, I have a Centurian, by Liberty...it is 24 inches deep, 5ft tall and 27 inches wide...1/4 inch steel double walled (total 1/2 inch thick)...IMO if you are looking to spend in the 2k range this type is awsome, it weighs 400lbs empty, has 3 steel rods that lock in on the sides, two on bottom, two on top, the hinges are inside, and has a four number dial combination with key secondary lock...(most are 3 number combo)...I would also suggest that you make sure it has the melt strip to seal it from damage in case of fire...Mine claims that it can be in a fire for 3 hours before any contents are damaged... Paid $2200

this is the one I have, Its actually made by Liberty, it seems Liberty makes safes for a lot of companys such as Deere and Browning! Who would have thunk it? Lol I hope this helps, also check online some will deliver!

I've had mine since high school.. it's not very big, Made by Stowline.

It's lag screwed into the studs and bolted into the concrete slab.

I can be broken into but it would take awhile and I don't think the thief would want to spend the time.

Someday I will get big dog safe.

I have a large Liberty safe which use to have the electronic lock on it. At first I liked it a lot but a few years in it started getting finicky...opening when it felt like it. Basically what it would do is it that it would accept the combination but the part which pulls the detent and allows you to open the door would not move. The same thing happens to our safes at work before they take a dump...and then comes the big cutter to open the safe. Since I work for the Government and am required to use electronic locks on our safes and see the failure rates as compared to spin dials, good friends with the locksmith, I replaced my electronic with a spin dial and have never looked back.

Buy the biggest safe you can since you will end up storing more than guns....jewelry, papers, backup harddrives, passwords, and all kinds of other things you never thought about.

Make sure you use either drying rods or desi packs. Humid weather will wreck havac on firearms.

If you think you might EVER need to move the safe or don't want the "delivery/moving guys" to know what you have or where you live, you might want to consider a safe from these guys...

I bought one from them about 2 years ago with drawers and the golden rod dryer option. It is really a great safe that you assemble with large internal pins that positvely lock all the panels in place. One man can assemble the all the safe panels but you'll need a buddy to help hang the door. It wasn't cheap but I like the fact that if I move to another house I will have no problem with dismantelling it and reinstalling elsewhere and it won't take a crew to move it out of the basement. I have a few friends that also have and love these safes as well.

BTW I went with the dial/key lock because it tried and true

Sounds like the one I have....It's a grey Timber Ridge that holds 7-8 guns and has shelves down the side. I love it. My Mom and Dad bought each of us "kids" one for Christmas a few years ago (4 total) and we all love them. As a reminder, they charge about a dollar a pound for these things so have a crew ready to help move it. Also don't put it in an upstairs room, if the house ever catches fire it can go right through the floor. A fireman buddy told me that.

My brother and I split the cost of a Patriot safe. Got it shipped to the door for 2100 has the best fire rating I could find. It has the digital pad and a laser cut Key to open it. It also has a jack to plug in an external battery pack as well as a second key for overriding the digital pad if needed. Our safe is bigger than what you are looking at but I can say I was impressed with the quality. They now have a larger one.
