Guys:

I am seriously thinking about a trans swap......

At this point, I cannot decide whether to go with a 6-spd, or an overdrive auto. I would like to do some track runs in the Goat.

So some input from you guys will be helpful. Any of you out there running 68-72 GM A-body's with newer trans set-ups on the track??

Manual. Im putting a richmond 5 speed in my 67' GTO. I already have the transmission and shifter and its supposed to be a bolt in deal.

It pretty much is a bolt-in, did it on my 67 El Camino. I did have to slide the crossmember back. I think I used the second to last hole (on front bolt hole of crossmember) and drilled the back hole, not hard to do at all. If your body mounts are old, one shifter rod may touch the tunnel. Mine did during test fitting, but after putting new mounts in, no problems at all. I did drop the mount tab down about 1/2" to allow for room for getting the driveshaft angle right. I believe the Richmond instructions (or FAQ on their site) tells you how much to lower it.

For the OP, I would go manual. The only auto I have is my truck (no option for stick with R/T) but I wish it was stick as well. Maybe I will change it down the road.

I've had both in my Camaro. Car originally came with an M-21 long ratio, and I liked it just fine. The lack of an overdrive coupled with the fact that it was my daily driver led us to a 700R4 because it was an affordable way to have overdrive back in...1999.

It was great having the overdrive gear, but the car just never really felt right being an automatic. The physical size of the Camaro (vs. my prior Chevelle), weight of the car, sounds, smells, etc. just seemed to be a better fit with a manual trans. With my Chevelle, the automatic seemed more appropriate, just based on the character of that particular car.

Recently I swapped back to the manual with a TKO600 and it really feels like the character of the car is back. Autos and manuals both have their place and with Auto setups like Twist Machine are selling with electronic controls, engine braking, etc., there is little performance tradeoff, if any. So I think it just boils down to the character of the car and your driving preferences. I suppose resale should be considered if you would ever sell the car.

The richmond practically falls into a-body's-the gear spread is like a m22 with a real first gear-what gear ratio do yo have in the back now?
not a fan of the 700(big jump from 1-2)
I do like the 200r4 gear spread as do I like the tko600 gear spread

I just finished my T56 install. Best thing you can do for the car
