I am pleased to announce Popular Hot Rodding's new project car...

"Project Olds"

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/09/3956695816_d7d46d593b-1.jpg

We have already started with some upgrades and the car debuted at the Good Guys show in Joliet last weekend. Please check out the blog....

http://blogs.popularhotrodding.com/6561190/project-cars/1965-olds-cutlass/index.html

The car was well received and did really well on the Autocross despite the lack of power.

Here it is currently...

Watch for the build up to start in PHR early 2010. Let us know what you think and stayed tuned as we continue the progress. I want to thank all my friends who have been so supportive. I also wanted to thank Detroit Speed, Baer Brakes, Rocket Racing wheels, and Nitto tires for their interest in our project. Also a big thanks to Performance Restorations in Mundelein, IL for helping us with the installs. I hope you all like the project.

Yes I like the olds power with new engineering incorporated. Anyone can transplant the whole LSx T56 into anything, but lets see an olds with aluminum heads, t56, hydroboost, and fuel injection. That has cool factor.

We have already done all the suspension work and brakes. The build up will start in the January issue. As for the motor, we are working on it, but you'll have to stay tuned. I don't think it'll disappoint.

Great looking car. Any chance it will have a serpintine belt system on an Olds engine? I have been trying to figure out how to do one. Lately I have been wondering how to do it so maybe I could use a side mounted type supercharger.

I'm working with Robert from Zoops on a serpentine belt system. Right now I have a prototype setup on my engine on the runstand. Everything fits within the width of the engine. I am using the 6.1" inch waterpump, but we have room to use the 5.6" pump and bring it back even closer, plus make it even more compact. I will post pictures as soon as we have the production version done.

The front suspension coming soon. D&Z Customs, (Randy Johnson) just completed a rearend install for a future article. I think you'll like what we have come up with. I was wondering if the 18" wheels were the smallest (dia.) that you could use with the drop spindles, or is there enough clearence for 17" wheels with the same backspace?

Until you've actually fit exhaust that nicely under a car, you can't appreciate how much work goes into it. Especially when trying to cram 3" pipe in places not designed for pipe that large, turned out really clean. Really digging all the extreme driver projects that are being done. Ron

Project Olds is getting some updates over the winter. With the help of Brent Jarvis and the guys at Performance Restorations, we pulled the motor and sent it back to School of Automotive Machinists in Houston,TX. They wanted to check things over and make a couple of changes. I will update those later along with some others. But I was lurking on some of my Olds forums and found these babies for sale...

New still in the original box. I will have to knock out the plug for a breather, but they will look Bitchin'!

Rob, instead of knocking the plug out for a breather, why not put in a -12 AN fitting and run a hose to a breather can? That way you won't have to worry about puking oil on your headers on the high G turns!

I was thinking about doing that through the plug. I was going to do braided line into one breather tank. I'm am open to any suggestions Herb.

Think that will really be a problem? Might be something I should consider before RTTS.

I'm not trying to hi-jack Rob's thread, but here's a pic showing how I have my valve covers vented into a breather tank on each side. Any oil that escapes my engine does not come from the valve covers.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

It seems that most engines with a typical breather on top of the valve cover suffer from oil working its way out through the breather and all over the engine and headers. For just cruising around town I doubt it's a problem, but the way we like to push our cars it's has the potential to be an issue.

Motor has been updated. It's back in the car, and coming back home tomorrow. Finally, LOL. Oiling issues seemed to be better, but time will tell but so far it's doing great and is much more responsive. Hope to post more pics soon.

Herb, thanks for the advice. I tried your fittings and the baffles they came with didn't fit between the rockers. Jeremy at the Roadster shop machined the valve cover and carefully welded in the fitting. I then made new baffles and JB welded them in. Seems to be ok at the moment. I still need to run the hoses and breather tanks. Me and the guys at Performance Restorations liked the Olds on the knock out, so that's why we relocated the fittings.

I used to have trouble with oil blowing out of the valve cover breather on a 1/4 mile pass. I had a pcv valve in one valve cover and a breather in the other. What I did was replace the breather with a breather that had a big 1/2" or 5/8" hose connector on it. They have foam in them for a breather and I pulled all that out. I connected that hose to a hose fitting on the base of my K&N filter so that when manifold vac dropped off at full throttle, I would have vac on the crankcase from all the air being pulled by the carb. Worked like a charm and I have never seen any oil since.

I used clear tubing as well so I can see if any oil is being pulled. So far, nothing.

I wanted to thank Phil, Jeremy, Neal and the crew at The Roadster Shop for helping us diagnose and get the Olds back on the road. Thanks guys for taking the time out of your busy schedule to give me a hand. This is what I love about this community. When you need a hand, someone is usually willing to help. You guys rock. Thanks again guys.

Turns out the oil pump was way overkill for the engine, causing low pressures at operating temp. They found that it would make in excess of 150 psi cold. We went with a new pump and seems to be working fine. I drove the car home from their shop, 130 miles. Everything seems a ok. Looks like I'll get some time in the car after all.

They guys at Windy City Rods and Restorations did a great job with the make over, which will be in the June issue of PHR. They didn't want to let the car leave the shop without addressing some of the visible issues. Make sure you check them out.

Without sounding too sappy that car is one of my favorites of all time and was my motivation for building my 67' GTO into a PT type of machine. It showed me that A body cars can handle and that you could do it piece by piece on a real world budget, have a killer car in the end, all the while getting some miles out of it and having fun while you build. It looks vintage and performs modern. Everything i'm trying to do with mine. Thanks for the great articles. Hopefully the new owner gets on here and keeps us up to date. Any plans for a new build?
