View Full Version : prodigy firebird convertible at barrett jackson

I noticed lot 702 at barrett jackson is prodigy's
I saw this car at PRI - very nice - I estimated about 150-200 k in this car.
Why is the owner selling it at barrett jackson in this economy? its an awesome car but from what I have seen recently pro touring cars are not getting the original build costs back - maybe this one will?? thoughts????
my guess would be around 90-120K at bid form a real deal third party.

If there's 3000 hours of work as claimed, (and I don't doubt that number) there's more than 200k into that build. That doesn't even cover the labor, let alone the purchase of the pre-build car and the parts.

Holy shiat.....you got some stones my boy. I've got to go watch this!
I was going to do a announcment.
So I have thought long and hard and Lisa and I decided to send Project EmptyNest to Barret Jackson Vegas. Am I nervous.............. Hell yeah! Am I excited..Hell Yeah! So the questions are Why? Why sell it? Why Barrett Jackson? Why Vegas instead of Scottsdale?
Lets talk about why sell it? A better question may be Why Keep it?
This was Lisa's (and mine) Dream car, but keep in mind I have 100 dream cars in my head! We had the idea for this car in our heads and knew the car would be beautiful and a crowd pleaser. And for 2 years now it knock the socks off everyone that sees it everywhere we go with it. It is 100% my fault, but I kinda over built it in many ways.
Long story short, we are done with it. It has done everything it needs to do and simply to pretty to beat on. We ran it back through the shop, completly painted it again (de chiped it), detailed it out and it is SEMA ready again.
Why sell now?
1 I build cars, I need to build a new car next year. Actually I will build 2 cars, one 69 Trans Am convertible for Lisa, black and gold this time with a 500HP LS motor, not nearly as off the hook show car. And another killer to be announced.
2 I cannot house anymore cars, between Michael, Lisa and I, we have 9 Hot Rods. 9 is past my limit by 2. We sold 2 others already to get down to 9.
3 Simply too much car for Lisa to enjoy (RE: Too much motor) We are building her another one, this time with a LS motor she can handle. And the bottom won't be pearl white!
4 Did I mention the bottom is pearl white! The car is simply to pretty to beat up.
Why now in a down economy?
1 The stock market is back to almost 10,000.
2 Things have come back in the economy a bit, will it stick? I don't know. Personally I think this is as good as it is going to get in the near future. I see nothing that makes me think things will get way better or the car go up in value in the next year or two.
3 Holding on to them does not make them any more valuable as they grow older. I should have sold it a year ago, but I was not done yet.
4 I got a smoking Prime Time Feature Car number, 7:30 Saturday night. I figure if Barrett is willing to burn a Prime Time number, they must feel it will be a star?
4 I feel whatever it brings, $50K or $250K, it is going to get fully appraised and bring the maximum amount of money, regardless of what that number is.
3000 hours is accurate, but also understand I knew it would never be worth it's replacment value before I started the project. This is my buisness, these are marketing tools as well as toys, and Lisa wants a car she can drive, and she wants a boat too, LOL! Seriously!
So were going to hold our breath and hope for the best. I will probably be drunk and loaded with Zanaz by the time it crosses the block, LOL!
I just wish we could do it tomorrow, the wait is the hardest part!

Yup, that was a joint decision. John and I spent hours discussing this and made the decision to jump in the water together. Same thing for John. He is ready for something new. And he got a smoking Friday night number.

I agree 100%. You'll end up getting what the car is worth today and possibly more than the years to come. That car has also made you alot of money and was one hell of a marketing tool. It was part of why I came to you. Look forward to the celebration that night! The beers may have to be on me, but none the less. LOL

Your exacly correct. Just the motor would be almost $40K to duplicate!!! $5000 block, $5000 bare heads, $2500 crank, $1000 rods, $1800 Jessel Shaft Rockers, $7000 in the Hogans intake and TB set up, The custom sleeves for the block were $1400!

you have to bid against the bidders and be prepared if you dont like the sale price to bid it up and basically pay the commission on the final price as your "reserve fee"

You really can't bid on your own car. You might get a trusted friend to anonymously bid and buy your car and then you pay them back, etc., but if B-J found out, you probably wouldn't be allowed to sell through them again.

Frank the best of luck to you guys, BJ is a great thing and if the right guys are there and you do enough advertising on it you can do very well. I would pull out an add in the Dupont telling people that the car will be there so if they are interested to go bid on it.
You cannot buy your own car back, you have to sign up give all your bank info and get a bidders pass, selling and buying passers are different. You can have a friend bid it up but they will have to be approved for the amount it hits to even bid. We have been doing the Scottsdale show for many years.
We see it all and they watch everything very close. They will not allow a buy back.
But its a super car with lots of goodies and Frank now is the time to promote promote promote the car, advertise it everywhere you can. Even EBAY to get people to come see it. The more people you have the more it will bid up. Just remember what happen to the Johnson Cuda he could have sold it for way more then what it did on auction so if you get offers that are very good keep them in mind. We see people hold out from someone that will pay top dollar and then that same guy buys it for half in the auction. it happens every year.
The more you get the better for our industry so as I said the best of luck to you guys. We will keep our fingers crossed.

It's a crapshoot (Vegas pun intended). The economy has recovered to some extent, especially with the stock market. Gas is relatively cheap. Housing markets are improving.
What's to say that we will continue to have good economic news?
Based on hotel fill rates, and information coming through B-J's dealers, the bidder list at Vegas is very very healthy, and last year's auction did well even in the midst of enormous upheaval in the economy.
So, off we go. Will prices be better in Scottsdale? I don't know, and I don't think anybody does.

if you sell on sat night you are going to be golden.all the high rollers go just for the high dollar cars on fri and sat night.if you are not up on fri or sat be prepared to have your azz handed to you. sold my truck at scottsdale in 2006 was told sun was still prime time. i was told that it would go on the block between 12:00 and 1:00 but closer to 1:00 because they allways run late so this is what I relayed to everyone that was intrested. The truck went up on stage at about 11:30 it was snowing yes snowing there was hardly anyone there and you could tell they just wanted to go home. the truck was on the stage for almost a minute and the gaval dropped and it was done . I stood there with my jaw hanging on the ground saying what happened.somthing they also keep as a secret is you can buy your own car back as a last escape but you are now the buyer and the seller so you have to pay both fees plus az. state sales tax 8%seller+10%to the buyer+7.5% sales tax= bend over and take it dry.don't want to scare you guys just want to help your decision.if you guys are on fri or sat you should be good if not pull the plug now.I would do it again if i was to be on the block fri or sat though. I wish the best for the both of you you both have some awsome cars keep up the great work and keep the hot rod dream alive.

This way they can still say they have 100% sale rate. I've said it before and everyone that drinks the B-J kool aid denys it, but I will bet my left nut that there are a few cars that "sell" but don't change owners when it is over.

Frank, I hope you don't mind, but I thought it would be fun to do a "guess the high bid" contest using Emptynest as the car this time. (We do these from time to time on random eBay or high-profile cars). The person who guesses closest to the actual high bid at the auction gets some ARP and V8TV shwag. Thought it would help promote the car a little more and give the rest of us that can't afford the car a way to play along. And no, there's nothing in it for us, we're not connected to Frank and Prodigy beyond friendship.
Anyway, anyone wishing to take a guess at the high bid can do it here...

They definitely need to bring in an announcer who is more in touch with Pro-touring and the current tastes of the car buying public. The current crew is mystified every year when nice pro-touring cars bring more than stock classics. I can't believe he actually called a protouring car a "fullsize hot wheels" in a very derogatory tone today. Not to mention the dead air space on the other protouring cars where they haven't discussed or emphasized them in any way. I hope Craig Jackson is willing to make some changes or owners will be hesitant to send their cars there. These guys are stuck in the past too much, they need some fresh blood.

Hey guys. just so everyone knows. The day i started that car I knew it was a Firebird and would have half the value of a Camaro. But we wanted to build it because we knew it would be beutiful, and that it was.
So when John and I decided to come here we set kill ourselves numbers, OK numbers, and really happy numbers. I was prepared to buy it back at $50k, At $60 would not be happpy, but would not kill myself. And thought it would do $80k to $100. My DREAM number was only $125K. I knew being a pontiac it would not do the big numbers some thought, but i sure as hell could not say that and kill my own auction before the sale.
Sure I would be happier with more money, but i am good. Like I said, it is Firebird, not a Camaro. it served its purpose, and i am completely OK. At that money is more then enough to build another car.
Were heading out to celibrate now.

Not that I'm saying it is an equal build, but using lot 676 (1st gen Pro-Touring Camaro) as an example, it went $103,000. $85,000 is a lot better than half of that.

Hey guys. just so everyone knows. The day i started that car I knew it was a Firebird and would have half the value of a Camaro. But we wanted to build it because we knew it would be beutiful, and that it was.
...And as everyone here knows they are almost identical under the skin, can be prepared using the same parts and can hold their own in a crowd of Camaros. You can pick up a rust free Firebird for a song and for a Camaro in the same condition you'll have to dance too. They are the perfect size for most home project garages and respond very well to suspension mods. Frank's car is an inspiration to people looking for a good starting point for a project and are frustrated at trying to find an affordable Camaro base to start with. Just look at Empty Nest to realize what you can do with enough time and imagination...

Loved the car Frank,no matter how you look at it, 85k is still crazy money for a Firebird. And you got the joy of building, running, and show casing the car for Prodigy. In the big picture you have to deside if it was an all around good experience,(I'd have to think it was) I'm sure you'll be back with something even cooler yet. Ron

I'm VERY grateful for this fact personally lol. I'm glad I don't see many Firebirds getting built. Then mine would be less special. And if people want to pay more for an almost identical car that in my opinion has less personality they can go right ahead. More Firebirds for me!!!
