View Full Version : Will 295/35/18s on 10s fit inside a stock 71 Camaro?

I've got a 71Z that is lowered 2" otherwise a stock leaf spring set up that I want to stuff the biggest wheel/tire combo in and am looking for some guys that have actually accomplished putting the 295/30 10" rim combo in an unmodified wheel well. I've been told that a 275/40 on a 9" or 9.5"rim is a sure fit but I would like to get a wider tire in there if I could. It's an original Z28/RS that I don't want to chance cracking the paint by rolling the lip on the 1/4.

i'm running 285/40/18 on a 9.5" wheel on my 73. it's lowered 2".
on hard corners it would rub just a little bit on the rear seat belt hump but it clears the 1/4 fine. they were 5.75" backspace if i remember right.

evo462; do you think you'd have enough room to run the 295/35 on 10s combo or would you have to pound down the seat belt hump and roll or cut the lips? Do you know the cross section of your mounted tire? How much room do you have between the sidewall and the 1/4 lip? Thanks

If i remember right you have to roll the fender lip and your measurments on the wheels will need to be right on. The seat belt himp should be fine until you go to 11's

i measured my 285 tire. at the widest point in the sidewall it's approx. 11 1/8". i've got approx. 3/8" from sidewall to inside of the lip on the 1/4. i think a 295 would be a tight fit on a lowered car but i'm sure you could make it work.

I'd run the 285 and call it done. At the end of the day the difference between the 285 and the 295 is really just the number on the sidewall as far as appearances go, and technically only .39" but the 285 will fit better, and is already a wide tire for that car.

I have 17x10's for my challenger. I just had 315/35 nitto 555r's mounted and they fit perfectly no bulge or nothin, I'll try to get pics up tom when I get to my other computer.

I would go with a 295/40-18 Falken makes that size in the RT615 tire. Little taller sidewalls look better on older cars.

To the original poster, yes the tires will fit. BUT.... It is REAL tight, and I don't recommend it without rolling the lips at least. I've actually fit 315's on the rear of my '77. While I do have the lips rolled, they would have fit without them rolled. But I wouldn't have run it that way. The safest fit without any modification would be the 275/40, in my opinion. If you want bigger, you have to move things a little, and expect some rubbing.

285/40 is the perfect tire there...

I know a guy with an early second gen fbody who has 315/35/17's on a 10.5" rim without minitubs, just some rollin of the wheel opening lip to prevent any cuts should it rub.

Yeah, that tire is just way too short though. If you want something with some sidewall, and some height, there are better options out there, even if the sidewall reads something a little bit narrower, it will look better.
