View Full Version : How strong are stock 12 bolt axle shafts?

Got a 12 bolt behind a mild ls2/t56 camaro. Wondering if anyone has any direct experience using the stock axle shafts with similar power. Mine look fine and am trying to decide if I can spend the money that a pair of Mosers would cost elsewhere. Rear tire will be a 275. I know a good set of new axles is the right move all things considered but like a lot of us I am financially restrained at the moment.

What does it actually take to break a stock 12 bolt axle shaft?

Street tires will not hurt the axles unless you have wheel hop problems.

I have a 496 and 275's in the rear, make a little over 600ftlbs. Never had an issue...

I'm running a stock 12-bolt with my H/C LS1 combo. No problems so far.

I cant see a problem unless you are tracking the car with sticky tires or hard launches on slicks in the 1/4

The spider gears and ring and pinions will go way before the axles. If you are doing a lot of tracking (1320), get the C-Clip eliminator kits, but as far as axles, the 12 bolt axles are good for 600+ HP on slicks without issues, the carrier and R&P are another issue and they will break with that power-trust me-lol. This is why I have a fully buily Currie 9" Ford built for 1000 HP launches on slicks with a stick.

I twisted up my rear end housing.Ripped the spring perches and rotated the axel tubes in the center section(maybe not in that order) on my all stock 12 bolt.500 hp small block with a 175 shot of nos on slicks.NO DAMAGE TO THE POSSI UNIT,GEARS OR AXELS.Spend your money elsewhere.

Buddy with a mid 12 455 GS blew out the stock spiders in one, stoxk axles were OK.
