View Full Version : Drill and tapping 10 bolt case for upper mount.

Just brainstorming planning my upper link mount on my 10 bolt. Id like to not weld onto the cast housing so I figure I could drill and tap the case for 2 bolts in front and reinforce the inspection cover and make it one with the pivot braket.

Does bolting the front to the housing sound like a viable plan?

Any suggestions for drilling and tapping cast iron?

I've seen some companies make brackets for s-10 lowriders that just bolt to the rear cover. It must be fairly sturdy.

I take it this is on a leaf spring rear end with no 'ears' to bolt to.

How about a bracket that surrounds the nose piece?

bracket near or around pinion is not a good location. Yeas this is a leaf spring car.

how about a GNX rear cover?
either that, or get a rear out of a coil spring car and make a bracket that bolts in between the upper arm mounting ears.

the GNX is a 7.5 if I remember correctly. Id like to not spend money that doesnt have to be spent The rear I have is set up with good parts.

GN, T-Type and GNX had the 8.5 but I think there was a change in the housings.

Personally I wouldn't do it. Maybe try this like Terry said.

I wonder if they would sell me an Unwelded one....

Anyone want to tell me if my original idea will work.

Can I have a little more clarification on what you're looking to do?

If you're not planning on integrating it into the bolts on the rear cover, I wouldn't trust it.
If you're asking about integrating the cover into the design so that it is used for reinforcing the link bracket, you're probably ok, depending on material used.

Have you done any math to determine the forces you'll be working with?

the only change in the G body housings from any other 8.5 was the location of the upper bushing mounts and the screwball "metric" flanges on the ends of the axle tubes. they use all the same internal parts and cover as any other non BOP 28 spline 8.5 housing.

Their are two different covers used for the 8.5 that's why I mentioned a possible change. I should have been more specific.

I wonder if they would sell me an Unwelded one.... I'm sure they would. If you call ask for Ricky. As long as you have the 11" round cover the bracket they sell for the 8.5 will bolt on. Some had an oval cover and IIRC they don't sell a bracket to fit that.
