Hey guys, I just got my trans rebuilt and the guy was $500 over his estimate. Now I know that I have no option but to pay him, he already has some of my money, or believe me I would never pick up my truck. I was almost ready to junk it and I thought about what I could find for 1k and decided I would be better off fixing it. When he gave me the estimate, he said he's really good at keeping his rebuilds right around the estimate, but $500 bucks isn't even close. Times are really tight for me and I live paycheck to paycheck, to top it off, I took this week off for vacation thinking I would go job hunting and/or find a part time job to help out. Well I guess I just needed to vent, thanks for listening.

In my shop we have a written estimate and we make the customer sign that if it is not going to exceed by $100.00 over that they are ok with it and if it is more than that we have to get a second approval by the client. $500.00 seems a bit excessive though..

Did the mechanic inform you about the cost over run or just went ahead did the extra work without approval? If he did the work without getting an approval you maybe able to tell to him pound sand and to give you back your vehicle for the original estimate.

500 OVERrun??? I would call that blatantly excessive for an overrun. I would think it would be hard to justify that.

Good luck man.

No written estimate, When I asked around everybody recommended him and I actually thought that since I'm there everyday making deliveries and we talk, and he said he would "give me a good price", that we were good. When I asked him about the difference he was just like "it is what it is, prices went up, blah blah blah". I'm chalking it up to "live and learn", next time I will shop around and get a written estimate.

I am well off not to brag and I would not write it off my friend-you might want to think about it and go back and talk to him some more. if all else fails, get a bat-lol.

Don't know what the BAR laws are for PA but here in CA, this wouldn't fly. There has to be a written estimate, properly completed, and any increase in the original estimated price MUST be discussed and approved by the customer beforehand.

Get an itemized breakdown of all parts and labor. Then discuss this problem directly with the shop ...

Good luck,

"it is what it is"..... what an assclown. I hate when people use that line, especially when they are using to explain thier actions.

Maybe you can hit him up side the head with a bat... when wakes up and wonders why.... just say... "it is what is".. and walk away.. man those type of people really piss me off...

California is the only state with a Bureau of Automotive Repair. Most states only have basic laws that apply to all businesses. Good suggestion but I think OP will need to contact the department of consumer affairs or like agency that regulates business maters in his state. It was a huge eye opener to see how the repair industry operates without the B.A.R. to regulate this type of deal. I was shocked and appaled at what I saw the first shop I worked for here in AZ get away with.

But I think the biggest lesson here is get a written estimate. You really have no legal recourse without evidence to put before a judge.

You're there everyday making deliveries?

I don't know what you're delivering but I'd make his life very uncomfortable for some time.

Missing package, broken, smashed boxes, attitude that uh it is what it is, yeah that package must have been misdelivered, fell off a conveyer.

Screw him.:bsjerk:
