I have always removed my wheels and put them in another place covered up. For quite awhile I used a completely different set of wheel from amother Camaro that had the same diameter but not as wide to do some of the mockup stuff.

That grinding dust that flies can embed itself into your paint too if you already have your car painted. When I watch some of the shows and see them grinding and a nice car in the backround unprotected I always criinge a bit but I know they just do it for the pics and hopefully not all of the time.

I used late model GTO spares as my rollers. Didn't buy wheels until the build was well along. I've seen garage build projects stall because the wheels were purchased early in the build consuming a lot of the budget.

At the bodyshop we would tape the full face of the wheel. You can also do the rear the same way while the wheel is on the car. Roll the car and tape the wheel a bit at a time until you get to where you started.

A lot of guys either have them repolished after a build or they use a set of rollers and don't put the real wheels on it to until they are finished with the build.

At the shop we use mock up wheels whenever possible, every now and then a repolish is in order. Of course the only grinding near finished paint jobs we do is for TV or a photoshoot.

For our "scarliner" build we actually used wheels from another project as mock up wheels because it took forever to get them made.
