So I'm getting very close to painting the firewall on my 68 Acadian (Nova) and have always been a fan of red. I want to get the firewall painted so I can get all the suspension back on. The last time I had the car painted, I had it done in a GM cherry red. Not sure of the paint code. I loved the color in the sun, but at night time it got too maroon for my liking. The September 2007 issue of Chevy High Performance has a 67 Chevelle that is done in House of Kolor's Kandy Brandy. I really like the way it looks in that picture, but when I did a search for it and found a couple other pics of what was supposed to be that color, I didn't like it as much. I like the deeper reds, but as stated above, don't want maroon. I also want a color that if the car ever gets into an accident, I can have it repaired without having the entire car repainted. I want a base/clear paint.

Can you guys post some pics of your red cars and if you know what the color is that would be great. Since I'm using BASF primer, should I stick with a BASF paint as well or can I use something else, like House of Kolor? Thanks in advance.

Here is an 80 Z/28 painted in 81 GM Spectra Red, It's next to a 2006 Dodge Charger Daytona called Torred, it has a little more orange in it. I have always been a fan of Red and have painted 2 cars in it, the first was on a 78 Z/28 and was Carrera Red (86 Chrysler Color) and the Spectra Red. I thought the Spectra Red was a little bit orangie until I got the Daytona.

Here is my 97 Cobra. The color is Rio Red. It is a Factory Ford color.

It is not maroon at all, even at night.

Good Luck,
Chris

Brandywine even in basecoat is some what of a candy so it's color will change depending on what is under it. Here is brandywine over black.

I had similar requirements for red when I was looking to paint my 1970 Pontiac Firebird Formula. I went with an early 2005 Corvette precision red OEM RPO 27U WA code 946L PPG code 906269. GM discontinued it mid year in 2005 to focus on the Victory red and Magnetic red.

It's a deep non-metallic solid red. It doesn't get to maroon-y but your eye may vary. Pics are on an advertised Corvette for sale (at that time) in the rain, sun and on my car in the garage using a flash. Last pic was an image comparing the various GM reds.

Hope this helps. It took me a long time to decide on this color but I'm glad I went with this one.

It has a slight orange and pink tint, but gets a nice deep red in the shade.

Sunset Red Metallic (in the shade):

House of Color SG105 Blue Blood is the best red on the market, we have painted a lot of cars with this color and it looks good during the day in the sun and at night. very bright and deep looking like you stated.

Ive done quite a few cars using just a straight toner red(off a mixing machine). it will always match perfect and they are some of the truest reds Ive ever seen. if not that I second the HoK blue blood red

House of Kolor Brandywine will look more maronish depending on the base you use...if you use black as a base it looks almost like a black cherry...and vise versa, if you use a lighter base it will look more "red"

I just saw a new or newer lexus (sc i think) with an awesome red metallic. I saw it on a sunny day and the reflection was amazing. I don't know how it looks in the dark, but in the daylight it was incredible.

I just two toned my 99 burb with black on top and GM Crystal Claret on the bottom. Looks fantastic with the windows all blacked out. I almost went with the Lexus color. Just remember RED IS EXPENSIVE. The basecoat cost me $600 for 3 quarts for just the red base and tintcoat. Now I have enough left over we are going to paint my son's 67 mustang fastback that color.

Thanks everyone for posting so many colors. It's been a lot to think about. So after all that I finally decided on a color. I actually got it today. After thinking about it, I realized that I really like the deep reds in the sun. I know some of them do go maroon in the dark, but I don't plan on driving it if I know it's going to rain. Sure I'll have it out in the dark, but when the sun hits it, it will look good. So after all that, the color I picked is House of Kolor's apple red. It's basically a base/clear version of candy apple red. Apparently it will be easy to touch up and I won't have to paint the entire car like I would if I had a true candy apple red. I'll be laying it on top of HOK's black base coat. One thing I did find out though.....not cheap. It cost me $425 for one quart of black, one quart of apple red, one coat of clear, reducer and catalyst. Oh well. I want this car done right this time. And besides...I have always loved candy apple red cars so I figured it was time to do it. I'll post some pics hopefully on Monday as I plan on painting the firewall then. Thanks again for all the replies.

We all told you RED is expensive and all quality components that go along with it. And people come into my shop and wonder why painting a car right cost so much.
