Hi guys,
I picked up a 2004 GTO that has been rolled. I got this car to put the engine and interior in my 69. I finally looked under the car and noticed it has a independent rear. What should I do with it? Is it worth keeping so that some day I can put it in my car? Are they any good?

Thanks

GTO's have a very poorly designed IRS. A 3-Link & PHB/WL would handle tons better than the trailing arm GTO design.

Why is that?

What happened? I guess I can bring it to the swap meet coming up.

I'm getting ready to put in the third one in my DD GTO. I don't drive it hard, and it has made less than 10 passes down the 1/4 mile in its entire life.

They are known to go bad and the posi unit is a joke.

Gear selection is very limited as well (and expensive)

That tells me that the differential is weak and has limited options.

If the geometry is any good (or can be made so), maybe somebody will figure out how to adapt something better to go between the driveshaft and the half-shafts.

I think another knock is that it is not a double wishbone/upper&lower control arm type setup. You would have to fab an upper mount for the struts as well.

i had the same problem as you. tring to figure out what to do with it. After walking over it for 6 months i posted it for sale for 100$. No takers, so it went to the scrap yard.

Factory Five uses a fitting that adapts the top of a strut knuckle to accept an upper ball joint. That goes to convert a Fox/SN95 Mustang donor front MacStrut suspension to SLA. It's not that complex of a piece, so something similar for a rear suspension shouldn't be all that tough either. Most likely easier, since SAI should be less critical out back.

After that, coming up with some sort of upper arm shouldn't be too difficult. I imagine that you'd have to tweak the toe steer a bit, though.

I've thought about this sort of adapter off and on since Fiat X1-9's were selling new, without having the means to actually make one.

I think someone did come up with a kit to use a Ford 8.8 diff in place of the GTO unit.

There is an 8.8 option and a 12 bolt option...both are expensive enough to not make it worth it for this application.

Thanks guys,
I guess it is not worth my time to remove it from the car.
My plans are to use as much as I can from this car and sell or get rid of the rest.

If its in good shape you can just send it to me for free. Haha

I'll tell you what, Im going to put it up for sale locally.
If it doesn't sell you can have it, you got to pick up shipping.
