Hi everyone! I bought my 1972 Chevelle without a title and was told by the previous owner that I could just put in for a lost title, well stupid me I should have seen this coming. I went to the DMV and tried to file for a lost title and was told it was rejected! So I went to the previous owner and he politely told me to leave! So I was thinking about trying one of the titleing services anybody deal with any of these? Im just looking for another way of getting it registered without going the legal route to resolve the issues with the previous owner. Thanks guys!

No but they have been in buiz at least 10 yrs, I have used broadway in mobile alabama. If you know someone in OK or somewhere where cars use a bill of sale you can get one with your vin, go and get your inspection-and the inspector gives you a "green sheet" and you take the bill of sale/insurance proof/greensheet-and a texas application for title to the tax office and go that route.

Just get a bonded title. You can do it yourself in TX. Very easy to do. No need to pay anyone for the legwork.

You want to watch the services, the states are getting wise and are coming back on people that use them!

The DMV man came to see my Dad last summer about 2 cars. He bought a title from a place in Alabama, and sold it. The DMV guy asked him about a second title. The guy showed him the title to his 55 Sedan Delivery he just finished. He did not get the title from one of these services but a prvious owner did. They said they were not going to do anything with him, but they were going to put a stop to it.

Interesting, up here (CT, RI) they don't title cars over 20 years old, I wonder what happens when someone buys a car from here as you only get a bill of sale? I sold a 69 to a guy in Virginia, he didn't call looking for a title? -Dan

Each of the title companies now have a list on their websites which states residents they will not/cannot due business with. As an example, Kentucky specifically states that they will not accept a title from an Alabama title company like Broadway title.

NEVER buy a car without a title UNLESS it comes from a state like NY or Alabama that do not have titles for cars older than a certain model year of age. In NY it's 1973 and Alabama its 1975. Cars registered in those states where the model year is older than the year stated above do not have titles issued when the car is registerd. You only get a "license receipt" that is the registration and proof of ownership.

There are title services in most every state. Go see a local used car dealer and they will tell who does title work in your area. There is usually a way to get a tltle. The problem with "lost title" cars is that more often than not there is a lein on the car. That's when you really have trouble!

None of the collector car auctions will consign a car without a title. Even those from non-title states.

If you are unsure, go to the states website from where you are buying the car to review title law in that state. You can also review the title laws in the state in which you live to see if your state will recognize a title obtained through on of the out of state title services.

All the title companies do is to have you "sell" to them the car you own with no title. They go and register the car to them and get a title or license receipt and then sell the car back to you. Pretty simple.

Glad you find a legal solution. Going the title company route can be scary.
