Hey guys,

I am wanting to make a weld in style cross member a la DSE. In order to do this I want to mock up a T-56 to my car to figure out where to cut the tunnel etc. My question is, i do not want to go out to D&D or G-Force and buy a $3500 transmission just yet, are all T-56 casings the same? Can i go to a scrap yard and get a casing with a hole in it to use for mock up and fab?

I looked at that PAYR company that does the polypropelene replica parts, but they dont have a t-56... would be nice if they did.

Let me know your thoughts.

Not quite. The LT1 T-56's are the same and the LS1 T-56's are the same. The Viper and Ford T-56's are different also. Middle of the page on this link (http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/6_speed.html) gives the dimensions for the various 6 speeds.

The main cases are all the same length and I think the front "adapter" plates are all the same thickness. The Aftermarket, LS1, LT1 and Viper T56s all have the same transmission to bellhousing bolt pattern. I would assume that the Ford version does too. The bellhousings and tail shafts vary in length/thickness. For your purposes I would assume any of the Aftermarket, LS1, LT1 and Viper trannies would work for mock up purposes, once you figure out your bellhousing setup. By the way, this link gives you a pretty useful blowup of the various versions of the T56 and some servicing information: http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/media/pdfs_autogen/T-56_Service_Manual.pdf

I haven't followed it in a long time but there used to be a thread in LS1tech where everyone who was interested in a SFI bell housing posted on it. That was started like a couple years ago. I think McLeod finally made one but if I remember right there was some clearance issues with some LT headers. I don't know if anyone else is making one yet. Lakewood makes a unit to bolt a Muncie to a LS1 but not a T56/LS1 unit again if I remember right.

2 Questions

On http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/6_speed.html it states “2003+ Viper (TUET-1806 ONLY available through Chrysler)” Is that not the same trans that was in them in the 90’s?

So everyone agrees that all the transmissions are the same except for the tail housing? (Size Only)

Does anyone know where i can get a junk casing just for mock up purposes only?
