View Full Version : Steering box adjusting
On my stock Steering box there is an adjuster with a locking nut I think it is for adjusting backlash. 1977 Pontiac Trans am.
What is the procedure to adjust or test for slack.
Thanks

Point wheels straight ahead, the gears have a tight spot in this position, - loosen lock nut and turn down allen screw til some resistance is felt. Too tight will make the steering stick in spots and you may find yourself zig zagging down the road. The amount of preaload is about what you can get using two fingers on an allen wrench. Manual boxes have another adjuster on the end plug. details are in the factory manual.
Thanks !!!
Is there a easy way to get better feel in the sterring ? It seems a bit over boosted... I was told there was a power steering pressure adjuster valve that could be swapped into the stock pump, but so far I have not turned anything up on my searches.
Thanks again!
