View Full Version : Shockwaves with mono leafs?

I have a 68 camaro.
I have no money for the Air ride muscle bar. I do have a set of shockwaves.
I have mono leafs that I want to de-arch and install the shockwaves (7000). this way I want to adjust ride height.
Low during the show, high during the ride.
I will do no auto cross or drag race with the car. Just cruising around and drive to car shows.
Has anyone ever done this?
Do you have pictures for me?

How do you get an adjustable height with the springs till in place. Sounds like you are gonna use them for locating arms now right? When you de-arch them does that basically take them outta the spring equation.
One thing I see is the rear end moving backwards by a certain measurement. Do you relocate the rear spring mount backwards too?
Im not clear on how you de-arch springs. Do you heat them under load till they loose the spring, temper them?JR

Wouldn't using the main leaf out of a multi leaf
pack locate the rear but also allow the lower rate to allow the car to lower and raise with the adjustable rate of the air bags?

The leafs are stock mono's.
I have to de-arch them 3 inches or de-arch 1"and use a 2"lowering block.
De-arching is done by using a press, no heat is involved.

Are you wanting to mount them in the stock shock location? I don't think they will fit.

I think they will fit the stock shock positions but the shackels will move all the way to the back when the car is in the low position. in driving position the leaf will be in almost stock position.

This is how I did it:
de-arched the mono leafs 4 inches. Build my own brackets and a cross member for the upper shockwave mounts.
Leafs or shackles are not hitting the rear frame. leafs are arching upwards now and is pulling the shackles back inwards.

Looks good. But I dont get it? You have two springs in place now. Are you trying to use the leaf springs as a lateral locating device? Why two spring systems?
It all looks good. Cept maybe that 1/2" bolt in shear (lower mount for the shockwave). The one that holds the black bracket to the what, angle iron L bracket. That looks to be a point of failure. If that is a piece of angle iron and a half inch bolt I would think about another arrangement. The tab of the angle iron will bend. Before the bolt shears.
Just adding two triangles of metal to the angle will keep it from bending. Some simple gussets. And you could even do it to the brackets you have. Make the triangle pieces to fit on the outside of the bracket so you will clear the bolts. Gonna have to toss that large washer at the bottom though. Whats that for?
It all looks good. I just think the lower mounts for the shockwaves could use a lil attention. JR

This is exactly what my Dad wants to do with his car. Im curious about how you de-arched the leafs. Did you do it yourself or send it off to get it done?

I took the leafs to a shop that is specialized in leafs and springs. They used some kind of roller waltz of take out 4 inches of arch. Cost me $ 100,-
After that I had them powder coated.

How's the ride? I've been thinking of doing something similar in my car.
I have mono leafs that have sagged a bit. The car doesn't really sit level and it's a bit floaty in back when you go over bumps. I want to keep my ride height pretty close to where it is now.
If you take some arch out of the leaf, doesn't that reduce the spring rate?
If so, then you can put a set of coilovers on back with a soft spring rate and the combined spring rates should balance out...right?

your just a few steps away from a fatmans trailing arm set up as seen in super chevy (http://www.superchevy.com/technical/chassis/suspension_steering/0507sc_fat/index.html) its not the way to go for a serious track car, but maybe for a cruiser/show car it might work

My Dad has something against panhard bars or he would be doing just that.
