Unfortunately, you read that correctly...last night (8/13/2009) COPO Pete had his 2500 Duramax + trailer + white COPO Camaro stolen from outside a hotel parking lot while he was eating dinner. He was in the Toronto area I believe, as he was getting ready & helping with a drag race this weekend. The trailer was found this morning at the edge of the Indian reservation nearby, but the local authorities have no jurisdiction within the reservation...[his wife had her truck stolen last year and it was found burnt on/nearby the reservation as well].

Anyway, Pete called and asked that anyone/everyone keep an eye out for any ZL1/400thm/4.56, or white with blue guts '69 Camaro parts, that happen to pop-up for sale. The truck is a truck, but lots of blood/sweat/tears in that Camaro...

Scary thing is, they're horribly close to Port Hamilton...

Scary threads for car guys living in Canada around the reservations...
http://www.marchforfreedom.com/smf/index.php?topic=508.0

The number was lower last year, but more than a car a day is still being found. Police say other stolen cars are hidden in forested parts of the reserve. This is a substantial haul, with all the earmarks of an organized criminal enterprise.

The 18,000-hectare reserve is policed by just 28 native officers. The Ontario Provincial Police rarely enter the reserve unless the Six Nations police invite them.

This isn't the most efficient of policing arrangements. Detective Constable Wesley Barnes of the OPP-led joint forces auto-theft team told the Globe and Mail that "Some cars stay buried in the woods for years," adding, "If you gave me a helicopter and the time, I could find you 100 stolen cars."

--and
Six Nations police have recovered 442 stolen vehicles so far this year, said deputy chief Rocki Smith on Friday. In 2008, the total number of stolen vehicles found on Six Nations numbered 700, he said.

--and
The car dumps, where mostly high-end and luxury vehicles are stripped of saleable parts, then either abandoned or burned, are often far back in bush areas on uninhabited properties on Six Nations, and the people involved in committing these crimes don't care if they destroy farmers' crops in the process, Montour said.

--and
"We suspect it's a (theft) ring that is selling parts to any willing buyer," he said, adding that there are also suspicions that some high-end stolen vehicles end up in shipping containers and are spirited overseas.

Crazy!
Be careful with your cars in that area!

Thats horrible. It doesnt sound like much of a chance of recovery if it went into that indian reservation.

more then likely they didn't know or care what was in the trailer they just wanted the truck. The sixnations natives are well known for liking gm truck. My father and my uncle both had their truck stolen and they ended up their. The car would not be shipped out of Hamilton the docks are 100% private so shipping a car from here is pretty much impossible. For a car to he shipped from the southern ontario area the car will have to go crossed country. Ill keep my eyes open but knowing people around here the car will show up or atleast the drivetrain.

Man?!!? Is it me, or are muscle/special interest cars getting stolen a lot more lately?
Could be because people need the money and do desperate things?

Short story - happy ending:

I too was a victim of a stolen truck/trailer/muscle car.

Grabbed a hotel in Ontario, Canada after reaching my destination late night. Parked the truck/trailer right outside my hotel window. No snow on the ground. Woke up to see 1" of fresh snow and distinctive area of no snow where my rig used to be along with some broken glass. Freaked out to say the least.

Constable (da' fuzz) came and issued report. The shop owner I was originally going to came by to assist. Both had seen this before and agreed more than likely the "remains" would be found on, or around the local Indian Reservation.

Within two hours the truck and trailer were recovered on a reservation perimeter road. Trailer empty. Musclecar gone. Steering column busted.

My shop friend gathered his 6 or so guys from his shop and armed them with hundreds of "Stolen Car - Reward for Recovery" leaflets that they spent the entire morning distributing to anyone with a pulse. Sure enough by mid afternoon a woman flagged down a constable, and after being sure she would receive a reward, directed the authorities to the musclecar location. Car found 100% intact. Not even a burnout performed by the perps. The "good samaritan" turns out to have a half dozen or so warrants for her arrest and winds up losing out on the reward.

Names have been with withheld to............well they have just been withheld....

Moral of the story:

- never leave the keys in the ignition of the car in your trailer
- always think you rig is vunerable to theft - anywhere
- do not allow a couple of bad eggs ruin your opinion of anyone

Car was recovered on the 18th.

"Hey guys. Thanks for all the support and to all the folks that posted on so many sites about this horrible news. What a roller coaster ride emotionally and physically.
Once I realized the complete rig was taken, I know time was very very precious. The odds of recovery looked very bleak and non existant.
Dealing with the cops was very frustrating and time consumming. A good friend suggested a reward right away to get there attention, cause usually the cars are parted out in the first 24 hours.
I knew in my heart that they were after the truck and the truck only, but the trailer was a bonus and I'm sure they could hardly wait to see what was behind door #1!
My friend went out on the reserve at noon the next day and put out a big reward on the condition that the car came back in the same shape they recieved it. Any damage would result in less money. It took 3 hours for the call(s) to come in.
Saturday things were lined up for a Sunday morning deal.
Sunday got up a 6am and drove the 2 hours back. We got a hotel room 20 minutes away from where it was going to happen. The next 48 hours you could have made a movie. Came home Sunday night with no car and negotiations started all over again on Monday. Finally @ 6pm the exchange was made off the rez in a church parking lot. Can't give any more details than that right now, but I still can't believe the car is in my shop as it was literally hours away from being parted out. Indians told me the car was "scary fast" and that it was the fastest car they ever drove.
You gotta do what you gotta do. There is going to be some changes around here! https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/08/crazy-1.gif
Thanks again for all your support.

Why don't you guys put alarms on your trucks? You could put a Dakota wireless motion detector in the cab and if anything moves it sends a signal to a receiver up to 500' away. We use them at our shop where it is too expensive to wire. It runs on a 9v. transistor battery. It can be hooked up to a phone dialer or an other alarm system.

That is great to hear Peter! I know EXACTLY what you went through with this whole deal - from the non-chalant police force to the very shady characters that caused everything in the first place.

So super-duper awesome to hear about a happy ending to this story!

Why not get a trailer with a sleeper in it? At least that way when they open up the trailer they'll be staring down the barrel of a shotgun with you right behind it. F*** THIEVES. Someone needs to ride around scalping these few Indians that deserve it. Put a sign on the trailer that says, ITS MY CAR OR YOUR LIFE, YOU DECIDE!!

Glad to hear it worked out even if it took more than they deserved for the car. I hope someone tunes them up with a bat for this . Did the cops have you look a mug shots to see if you could pick them out ? Even if they couldn't get them for this car they will know who to watch next time . Again glad to hear the good news.

It kinda' sucks that you had to pay to get your car back.
The Reservations can be a bad place.
Poor law enforcement there.
( Especially for outsiders. )
But , it's always been that way on the reservations.
They can be bad places.
All Native American Indians are not bad people , but they do fall victim to their environment ( Reservations )
