I hope you guys can help me make the leap with this project.. I have a 67 Firebird 400/4 spd that I bought without a trans and basically a non numbers matching 400 long block. I planned on doing a tremec 5 spd and having the 400 built to somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 Hp and doing all of the global west suspension, ssbc brakes and all the goods to make it fun to drive. I dont know anything about the different LS motors, and hopefully you guys can give me the pros / cons of throwing one in the car instead of doing the 400. Im thinking I could do a carb'd LS motor for less money and be more reliable than the 400, but wondering if there are any builders you guys would recommend in the southern california area to talk to about it. Thanks

ones you go LS youll never go back... to whatever..
you cant beat those motors man.. modern, reliable, redilly available..
now if you want the old school sound itll take a bit more cake to do it.. but its not a problem..
if there are any cons to the swap is that you may pay a bit to first get it in there. but after that youre good.
I just like the idea of get in it and go!

I was going to have to buy mounts and everything anyway, the 400 my car came with was sitting in there on 2x4's, thats why i kinda figure this ls may be the way to go, since, even though I have a 400 block, I am pretty much starting from scratch.

Swapping to the LSX family of engines is a lot more work and will cost more money compared to just keeping the drivetrain mostly original with the Pontiac 400.
Of course going to the trouble and added expense to run the LSX definitely has its rewards. Killer-flowing stock cylinder heads for power production, lighter weight over the front end for better cornering and fuel injection for much better fuel mileage are the main advantages.
Don't let the fact that you need new mounts for the engine make up your mind, it takes a lot of effort and money to do even a budget-minded LSX swap.
Just to give you and idea of the cost and amount of work it takes: https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48361
Good luck, Bart
