My aunt got herself at a school in Tucson. Pretty much my entire immediate family is living in the Flint area right now (my parents, and most of my aunts/uncles). My parents & I are helping her move down there, and I'm taking a lot of my own stuff on the premise that I will be living there (she offered me a room should I choose to have it). Could anyone give me a general lay of the land for the area? :D I'll be taking my '92 Sierra which is stock, but on down the road (sometime in the next couple years) I'll probably be taking my '78 Malibu down, and I'm not sure what I'll have to be concerned about. The motor in it right now is basically a 9:1 Vortec-headed sbc, with a Comp XE268H cam. I checked and I think I'm good on the cam (says it's 50-state legal), but what about the intake? It's a GMPP intake with an Edelbrock 1405 on it. I have a Pypes exhaust system with an x-pipe, and I understand I'll need cat(s) down there, but would it be legal to run a pair with my current system? I've never had to deal with inspections or emissions in MI, so the thought's never crossed my mind.

They will do the sniffer test and do a visual inspection for a cat. Thats about it.

That sounds good :D What if I swapped something like an LS motor in that is OBDII? Would I be able to sneak that by in a '78 G-Body, or do you think they'd want to scan it?

Couple of things for engine swaps in AZ:

First off, you're going to have to claim an engine change when you go in for your emissions test, and they'll examine the engine to ensure that all the emissions equipment is in place as it was from the factory per the year, make and model that the engine came from. Then if it passes visual they'll want to do a sniffer and plug in to the OBDII connector and check for errors. Then they'll do a gas cap pressure test if it's uses a standard tank or cell, if you do an alternative fuel conversion they'll do additional checks. Namely propane conversions and tank certification is the big one.

It sounds like your current set-up should be just fine, just make sure you take some time and re-tune and clean up the carb before you take it in. A pair of cats should be just fine, so long as they're 50-state cats, don't get the 49 state cats in case they ask. If you've removed an air pump or ECR or anything like that, you're going to have to put it back for the test.

The guys out here are always quite reasonable. Some will actually ask you questions as they go through everything, others will just stick you in the little cell they have and tell you whether or not their going to pass you. If you fail they are required to tell you exactly why, and you get a re-test for free. If you fail that test then you can get a one time exemption.

I've already done quite a bit of research out here, I'll be putting classic car insurance on it once it makes the trip out here.

Let me get this straight, if you have a vehicle made in 67 and you put in a newer motor they want it to have all the pollution stuff attached and functional. they just doesn't make sense to me. I want to retire there in 15 years but if that is one of their rules I will look elsewhere.

That's pretty much it with any state I believe, '66 and older doesn't require testing. The way around it is what I mentioned though, collector car insurance, then there is no emissions testing at all.

In Arizona, you only have to meet the emissions requirements for the year of the car. My 5.3L powered '67 Camaro passed with no problems, they didn't even pop the hood. Probably thought it was still a 6 under there. :twothumbs

But the emissions-exempt collector car insurance deal is really the worry-free way to go.

Or live outside of Maricopa County. I'm buying a house in pinal county and my DD needs emissions because I work in town, but nothing else will, can do whatever I want to any other car I own and it just won't matter.

Careful with that, if you live in maricopa county and your car is ever towed by any city pd or dps or mcso they do an inventory of the car, and can report you to ADEQ and the DMV and they'll kill your registration on the spot because the vehicle technically doesn't conform to emissions regulations. I've never heard of it done, but they can. Theoretically, when you take it in to get tested you have to inform them and they have a whole extra checklist they have to go over and some paperwork for you to fill out.

Being an OBD-II computer I'm sure all they did was connect the scanner to it.

Hmm, first time hearing about this. Will have to look in to it.

I know this is kinda old but wanted to share my experiences with you.

I installed an 04 Mach 1 Mustang engine in my 82 Mustang GT. Took it to emissions and it had virtually no emissions but...they failed me because it didn't have the air pump on it like the 82 engine has. They didn't care that it passed the sniffer...only that it has the original smog equipment on it. I did take it to a referee station and at first the guy was a real jerk....asking me if I did this or that trying to stump me and show that I didn't do the swap properly. When I showed him everything he asked about, he passed me for one year, only after complaining that I installed the OBD connection in the wrong place. (He actually made me get in the car and disconnect it from the dash so he could connect to it!) I installed it exactly where it was installed in the 04 since I have the 04 interior in my car! Anyway...the next year I added collectors insurance and said screw the emissions.
Tell me emissions testing isn't about money! Tell me! What a crock...

Interesting read. I'm assuming this was in AZ? From what I've read and been told, I'll be able to run headers without issue on the truck (it was built sans-air pump), and I'll probably just run a 3" converter in the stock location.

I'm currently in the process of building a 383 for my '92 Sierra. Not exactly a pro touring build, but I do plan on lowering the truck & upgrading the sway bar, adding a rear sway bar, etc. for handling. I'll be sticking with TBI, and I'm already running an EBL setup from DynamicEFI.com on the original 4.3. It adds SO much more over the stock computer, but keeps everything (except for the data cable connection of course) in the confines of the original TBI computer case. On top of that, I can tune it with a laptop, and flash it on the fly without even shutting the truck off (although a shutdown/restart is recommended to re-seat the IAC).

The cool part about the EBL is it also adds lean cruise. The day I put it in I did some playing with it along with other things (being that the 4.3 is stock I was able to use an included tune, and the truck starts, runs and drives as good - or better than - stock), and got this reading:

Whether or not that is 100% accurate (it was all highway driving on flat road) I'm not sure yet, but it shows the possibilities, and once I can afford a wideband O2 setup I will be able to better-tune this engine and the 383 after it's built and installed.

LM7_67, were you at the CC Engine Swap Drags? I read the article in the magazine, and now that I've seen your avatar it has me wondering.

Sweet :D. There is a big-ish show in Tucson this Saturday, are you coming down for it? There were several hundred (at the least) cars there last year. Congrats on the win BTW :D

The show this Saturday is the Tucson Classics show. The address is a prep school, but a ton of cars will be showing up.

I lucked out & found a parking spot within a few minutes' walking distance, but yes it can be a little difficult to find a parking spot. I don't work Friday night (3rd shift) or Saturday, so I'm going to try to sleep and get there a little early so I either a)have a parking spot close by, or b)have enough time to walk and not miss too much...

I just looked at the Super Chevy show info... I didn't realize it was in Chandler! I'd really like to go to this, do you have any pointers far as when to show up due to the event size? The biggest show I've been to so far is Back to the Bricks in Flint, MI where there were probably 25,000+ cars, but it was a show/rolling cruise that lasted 5 days.

There's a swap meet down at SIR next weekend as well that I'm going to try to hit up.

umm, not sure when's best to show up. autoX starts at 9 both days (iirc) so I'll be showing up a little before that.
