Hi,
I am installing brakes on the front from an 2002 SS Camaro (LS1) brakes and I am purchasing drum hub assemblies for the front from a '67 Camaro, I have read that you need to turn down or machine down the hub but I am unsure exactly what needs to be done when I take them to a machine shop. Anyone who has done this if you could please let me know I would greatly appreciate it. I have searched everywhere and so far they all say to machine down I think .006" but where?
I am also installing the rear disc from the same vehicle which seems to be easier but I am also reading conflicting reports on if I need to use shim brackets or just install and also if it is necessary to use 2 left calipers or 2 left backing plates?

Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg,

The fronts you need the bracket and turn your old rotor to a hub. Then machine its diameter to 6.9" after the rotor surface is cut off. This is to allow full flat contact of the rotor to the hub.

On some applications the rear axle to wheel flange must be machined to 6.9" and a 3/16" spacer is to be used behind the backing plate to center the caliper abutment. Two lefts should be used to clear the shocks on the staggered cars.

Note: I believe it is still 6.9" as do not have my notes with me.

in the middle of the hub is a round lip.the lip is suppose to fit inside the middle of the rotor hole.if you try to slide the rotor on the hub right now you will see what need to be machined.the outer part of the hub(where the wheel studs are)should set right up against the back of the rotor.

have him machine the hub,not the rotor.otherwise when you get new rotors they will need to be machined also.

Does anyone know of a good source to get the front bracket for the brake caliper or just make your own, I found a template from a Rich Hoag on Pozzi's site.
Thanks,
Greg

if your not too deep into the ls1 setup, you might want to look into the c5 setup. there is a couple of options for rotors, either the 12.79" (it think) c5 rotor, or the 13.0" c4 rotor. both use the c5 calipers however. check out www.kore3.com (http://www.kore3.com) or www.touring-classics.com (http://www.touring-classics.com), both very helpfull. i did front and rears on my 69 and it was a very simple and inexpensive setup.
