View Full Version : Rod Keeling's '67 Camaro Build

Well, I finally decided to post something about my '67 Camaro build. I've had this car for over a year, and after years of looking, reading, watching, etc... I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted (or so I thought). I bought the car in primer, no interior, with a 408sbc, TH350, 10bolt, and planned on steering it toward the pro touring side. I planned on mini tubs, lowering the suspension, adding some good shocks, wheels and a/c, then driving it. Yeah right........... Somewhere between hooking up with Frank Sarafine, and seeing this Orange '68 (Bad Penny) in every damn magazine I picked up, my plans changed a little. Out went the 408, TH350, 10bolt, front subframe, and everything else I could pull off.

The new plan is this:
L92 (with Mast L92SS Pkg)
4L80E
Moser 12-bolt
Prodigy / G-bar
Speedtech Subframe
Qa1 Coilovers
DSE Tubs
DSE Subframe Connectors
Fikse Wheels
Vintage Air
ISIS Wiring
Etc, Etc, Etc....

This is what I started with (straight car).

My #1 fabricator Zach helping with the mini tubs, lol. He looks forward to working on the car, and asks about it nearly every day. It's funny because we are learning together, and believe it or not, he has been a huge help.

Installing Prodigy Bar / Gbar from Frank. If it weren't for pro-touring.com I would have never ran across Frank and Prodigy. He is definitely the man with a plan. Thanks Frank!!!

Sending it to Brad Starks for body fab and paint... It's cool seeing it back on the ground with a new bad ass stance.

This is were we are today. It is stripped to bare metal and the guys at Brad's shop said that the body is in really good shape. The quarters were previously replaced, but according to them, they are solid and the install looks good. The only placed that need attention are pinholes around back glass and small crease in passenger door. I know nothing about body work, but could tell everyone was surprised to see it in this condition. I know I was relieved.

Just a quick question on your front valance. Is it a custom piece in the rendering? Looks a little different than stock. I may be wrong?

Wheels are Fikse Profil5s 18x12 rear and 18x8 front (for now). I didn't plan on the Speedtech subframe in the beginning, so I will probably get the front widened later (since it can now accept up to 10").

Quick update. The body and jambs are stripped. The body panels were reinstalled and are being lined up to check the gaps. I think we have decided to extend the top of the front fender to match the door lines. That will also mean less of a gap to fill were the bottom window chrome would be (going with the flush glass) on the pillar.

THANKS.

Not sure if there is anything. I'm leaving the body fab and paint to the pros. They are just getting started. I know that they still have lots of fabricating to do before any primer or paint.

Maybe some WD40 and a scotchbrite pad?

not trying to jack...i've got a project truck in my garage that's been sitting for almost two years and some of it's bare still and i've seen no rust on it yet and the garage has the washer and dryer in there too and the dryers exhaust wasnt' connected for most of that...guess it depends on where you live as to how the air reacts to the steel...just dont touch it with bare hands...oils from fingerprints rust mucho rapido...

No problem. Yeah, I was at the shop yesterday and touched a little area on the fender and roof. Brad told me that those two spots would rust over night (fingerprint oil), if they didn't go back over it. He also had heard that HotRod's by Troy has someone do the "WD40 and Scotchbrite thing" once a week to keep all of their "bare" cars looking good.

I just can look with amazement how nice this car is. Even in bare metal. I have a 67 camaro that is waiting to be rebuild but still doing my homework on how to this. Still gathering info around on the web and i just bought a 68 camaro. This one is driving so i will be doing some body work for now and when i have all info i need i will be restoring this one allso. Your car looks amazing. I live in Curacao (Caribbean) so we don't have all the materials and shops you guys have. So to get it like yours is going to take several years. Hope to get mine as nice as yours. Thank you fo sharing and keep us posted.

Hey Rod car is looking great, Are you going to have it ready for the Motorstate event next spring?

Hey Brian.

I would love say yes, but I'm not gonna hold my breath. I'm shooting for late spring/early summer. I definately want this thing finished by next summer. So much to do and soooo little time. Hopefully it will be painted by mid-November. I plan to buy/install my intake and cam pkg before then, so that the engine will be ready too. Then plumbing, wiring, etc... I am still waiting to decide on the interior route. If I send it to who I want, it could take an extra month+ there. The finish date will determine where this car will be next year. We'll see.

BTW - Thanks for the comments, guys. I appreciate the feedback.

Quarter Lip.

It didn't want to cooperate with the roller, so Brad cut the lip in half (up top) and then closed in the back side. It looks much better in person and seams to have really stiffened up the area.

Awesome. I love the black. Any plans for the interior?

Thanks.

Interior plans are to keep it fairly simple. Factory style with a clean, modern twist. Flat black panels with black leather, maybe some dark charcoal stitching or brushed aluminum pieces here and there to set it off. I'm actually leaning toward sending it to a site sponsor, Tracey Weaver (Recovery Room). I've seen several local jobs, and I've seen Tracey's work. If there is any way that I can swing it, I want Tracey's work in my car. I'll just have to wait and see.

Yes, I'm running 335/30 on the rear. They fit fine before, but about half of the quarter lip was removed just in case it got tight when finished.

Moving right along. Metal fab work to body is finished. Gaps are laser straight, and body lines are almost there as well. A little more blocking, and they're ready for primer. Should be ready for paint in two weeks.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/12/DSC04498-1.jpg?t=1261801094

I have to pick out the paint colors soon. It will be BASF Gasurit brand. Anyone have suggestions for the "Charcoal Gray" color to use on the stripes? I'm trying to get it as close to my rendering as possible (see below). The black will have NO metallic or pearl. I don't think I want the charcoal to either, although I do like the new GM color Cyber Gray Metallic. I definitely want the stripes to be subtle, not necessarily "ghosted", just subtle and CLEAN.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Body is finished. I am extremely pleased with the body and paint work so far by the guys at Brad Starks Rod and Custom. Brad and Chris did an awesome job, and the Glasurit poducts look great.

The car is now back on the ground as a roller. The doors, hood and trunk lid will be finished and hung this week. After that, it's FINALLY back home for the Dynamat and wiring.

I expect the Mast stuff to arrive any time, so the engine will get some attention too.

Mirror finish on roof.

Ron. The Mast Pkg is the L92SS Performance Pkg. It includes their M90 DBW controller, beehive springs and cam. They state 545hp with that one, then I added their Black Label heads on top of that (probably another 50-60hp). Should be 450-475 at the rear wheels with my setup.

Call Brian at Mast for more info, then call Frank at Prodigy when you're ready to buy.

Three boxes of bulk pack Dynamat are finally installed. Front Wilwoods, steering column, and other little parts on. After this picture, I put Dynamat on the inside area of quarter panels and kick plate area. That finished the three boxes up. I honestly could use one more box, I think. I did nothing in the trunk or on the interior side of the doors or quarters.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I'm now trying to plan the ISIS install. I have to admit that it's very intimidating. I tend to procrastinate when something like that seems so overwhelming. I'll probably install the side glass stuff as soon as the Nu-Relic parts arrive, then tackle the wiring along with the Vintage Air.

Here's the Anvil rear spoiler installed. I like the different look.

Thanks Tracy. I've got the outer skin covered now. I appreciate the tip about painting it. I didn't think about being able to see it later.

And I sure don't want to make it hard for the door panel installer either :).

We just finished having the fenders, hood and rear bumper installed. After listening to feedback from others, I decided to have the bumper painted black to match. Shiftworks shifter just arrived. I have most of the glass in and am wiring the stereo. I still have to get a measurement for the drive-shaft so that it can be ordered from Inland.

Thanks for the comments guys. I'm trying to get it ready to take to Tracey at Recovery Room for the interior. Actually, I should have delivered it to him two months ago. I'm finishing the glass/power window install, shifter, drive-shaft and I think it's ready. I really wanted to drive it down the driveway before having the interior installed.

I didn't do any power door locks, but I'm thinking that I should. Would somebody chime in and tell me what is involved in converting to power locks and what company makes a good product there, please? I have the ISIS system, so I should be able to use that to operate them.

MODO makes a bolt in kit after you drill a couple holes to mount the bracket with template provided. You would need 2 inputs to add to ISIS. We have the brackets on our website, and can include the actuators with them

That's funny! Kris did a great job with the rendering, but it did take a very long time with all of the back and forth communication.

Absinthefun-I will get a closeup of the fender. I havent decided exactly what trim to use around the windshield. The trim sent with the flush kit wasn't wide enough so we used a trim front the glass shop. It fit all but the bottom sharp corners. Right now I have the trim ending at those bottom corners (kind of like some of the newer vehicles). I'm just not sure right now.

Thanks again everybody!!!

My gosh!!!! I can't tell you how right you were. Tracy has probably written me off by now (I hope not). I don't really have any updates at this time, just tying up loose ends (all of the glass is a real pain in my a$$). My buddy Pickle decided to come by and lend a hand last night. Man, it's so much easier when someone else is there to help. Since the last time I posted, I did decide to go ahead and install the Modo power lock actuators (thanks Mike).

I'll get a few pictures of the glass/fender area for those who asked, soon.

For Conrad - the specs on the stands are 12"x12"x12". Take a 2"x4"x16" and cut into 12" sections. Screw and nails them together (8 pcs tall) two at a time for your very own Jenga stand (just like DSE).

Finally wrapping this thing up. In the last few weeks I've installed the power windows, door locks, Shiftworks shifter, seats, speaker wires, a/c and heater lines, wired the front end, and set the pinion angle. The driveshaft is ordered from Inland Empire and I have a couple of DSE pieces coming as well. This will finish the power steering. As soon as these last few pieces arrive, I'll be setting the car back on the ground and easing it down the driveway. Yay!

Not much to update at the moment. I've finished the Vintage Air plumbing, power steering, etc...I'm just tying up a few loose ends and minor issues with the wiring. I found a small leak in my radiator (repaired), and did some tidying up of the engine compartment too.

I've also been trying to get the ride height/ground clearance right. The headers and trans pan are hanging 2" below the Speedtech subframe. I've been told to set the subframe at 4" from the ground. It looks really good like that, but only a shade over 2" GC to my headers doesn't look to work. Right now I have it set to 3.5" the headers (5.5" to subframe), but the ride height looks too high.

Yep. I'm sure we'll make the rounds to a few of the Paducah and Mayfield cruise in's.

Travis,

Blake and I are trying to figure out why the headers are hanging so low below the subframe (1-7/8"). It looks like the engine is what's too low, but I can't see why.

Thanks Steven! The entire grill assembly "shell" is actually for a '68. I like the sharper angle of the 68/69 is why I did that. The billet grill is a custom that I powder coated a flat black. As far as the fender/extension, yes, I had them welded together (along with several other seams on the car).
