(I will move this in a couple days to the right section, just wanted everyone to see it here first)
Everyone coming this year, please note this and make your plans accordingly.
We will be doing a Tail of the Dragon run on Friday as our cruise. Several have asked me about doing this over the years, and we will do it this year. This means you need to be here, ready to go about 11am on Friday.
I have also talked to a local vendor, and we will finish up the cruise at his place for our dinner that afternoon. I will share who that is, but trust me, the shop tour will be something you will not want to miss. For those that can not get here early, there will be a mini cruise for you too, to the vendor's place.
This will be an exciting trip, so be sure and make plans to be here earlier.

If you wanted to make it an all day cruise you could also consider the Cherohala skyway for next year. Much better road for fun to me. I've done both for years on motorcycles. The Cherohala is great, plus the local law enforcement was really cracking down hard on the dragon last year, not sure about this year. Also I'm not sure of the route you have planned, but wear's valley road to Townsend and then cut across the Foothills parkway to the dragon is nice.

It's a story to remember for sure. The only not-so-funny part was when he started picking away at the hole in his broken windshield with bare hands. It was nasty. :barf: Like watching a horror movie. He was actually trying to get back into his wreck. Who does that? Someone looking for his stash, that's who.
He got hostile when I tried to stop him..... Help yourself, buddy. One way or another, Run Thru the Hills is always exciting.

OK guys I have been cruising all day working on a really cool cruise.
Only trouble is, there is not a good way to cut it a bit shorter and it works out to about a 120 mile cruise at this point, BEFORE DINNER then another 35 or so back to the hotel. I can cut it to about 90 miles, but we will have to go thru the dragon, turn around and come back the same way for about 15 miles. One bad thing about the mountains, not may ways around them. The 120 mile route is about a 4 hour run. Beautiful scenery though, and I think people will like it, just a lot of miles.
Comments please from those coming.

But , it would be fine to drive the Dragon and then turn around and drive it in the other direction !
That would be better.

The long trip is as follows.
441 South from Pigeon Forge, to Cherokee.
US 19 south to Hwy 28
Hwy 28 to Fontana and 129
129 (at this point) is the dragon
129 north to Alcoa (Keisler's shop)

OK, another day of cruising today. I have it nailed down, took off about 20 miles. Here is the best thing though, we will run the dragon, both directions. We will hit 129 South, just north of the dragon, run to Deal's Gap, turn around and back through the dragon, heading North. This should give everyone a nice feel for one of the most famous twisty roads in the country. Plenty of gas stations along the trip too, so no issues there.

If I'm out of place with this post then somebody slap me and I'll shut up.
We are all going here to have fun first and foremost. I have ridden this road a dozen time a year for the past 8 years on motorcycles, both sport bikes and touring bikes. This is a motorcycle mecca and is rated one of the top 10 roads in the country by all motorcycle magazines. That being said, people come from all over to ride it and it will be covered in bikes.
There are 318 curves in 11 miles. some are decreasing radius, some are off camber, and many are blind curves. Some have a 6 inch dip right in the apex (a warning for those with low front spoilers).
THE NUMBER ONE RULE IS TO STAY IN YOUR LANE!!!!!! Many car and truck drivers feel it neccessary to cross the double yellow and play road course racer. PLEASE DON'T DO THIS!!!! There are road courses for that type of driving.
Most of the sport bike riders run this road hard. They will be mid-curve, layed over at full tilt with the footpeg dragging. The last thing you want to see is a car IN YOUR LANE mid-curve. Your already flat out and there is nothing you can do.
I know you'll say that the biker should be behaveing better than that also. But if he is in his lane and on the proper side of the line then no real fowl. If you are taking both lanes then you are DEAD WRONG whether you are meeting a bike or a car/truck. This is frowned upon heavily if you will check the killboy site or any of the other dragon sites. It causes many injuries each year, so much so that last year the Tenn. Governer set aside special funds to have a large group of both state patrol and local enforcement there around the clock on nearly every curve, every weekend. They even kept a paddy wagon up there most weekends.
Let's all have a great time running HWY. 129 but keep it safe, legal, and respect the others who are trying to do the same. It is a public road and not closed off just for our run through. So let's set a responsible example for musclerides, Bill, and Pro-Touring as a whole.
I hope I didn't overstep with these comments. I've just been there a lot and seen the mayhem and stupiddity in action and I know we have a much better and more responsible group than that.

You are spot on with this post Tommy. I ran it again today in the vette just to check mileage. There were three county cops at the start of the run and a State Patrol in the middle. In fact the State Patrol followed me out on the way back. This is a public road and foolishness will not be tolerated. It is a very fun ride, at the speed limit and there are turns you have a hard time maintaining the speed limit in. That said, look to have a great time on the cruise, BUT, by all means, look out for the others in the other lane and be safe.

Also be on the lookout for that idiot who is out there. I came around one curve there two years ago to find a bike on it's side sliding straight at me with the rider on his back sliding about ten feet behind it. Luckily there wasn't anyone behind him coming the other way and I was able to take evasive manuevers. He was wearing full racing leathers and luckily was unharmed. He got up , got on the bike and proclaimed that he was gonna try that again, sheez! There will always be someone who lets their desires exceed their abilities. It's a fine line in that area and several find out the hard way.
I'm not preaching by any means, just wouldn't want to see anyone with an R1 for a grille ornament.LOL

Last year we all met up and hung out at the hotel on Friday afternoon. Took some pictures. Did some last minute signups and payments for those that don't pay up front.
The cruise is free. I don't think that's what the $15 is for. Per post #1 in the announcement thread, "Dinner will be $15 per plate." So if you have someone eating, pay the $15. If you want to cruise then go hit McDonald's, don't pay. But I don't see why anyone wouldn't want to eat - the restaurant was delicious. ;)

Haven't run the dragon, but I have had a chance to run my car up in the twisties around that area when it was carbed and everything was fine.
How intense are we really talking here? What's the speed limit?

I don't know the speed limit, but it won't matter.
This is one of the most well-known roads in the country. It's known for the amount of curves in such a short length of road. I beleive Tommy posted the numbers somewhere above...
I guess to answer the intensity question its a matter of who is in front of you that really will answer that question.
Open road may equal a seriously scary and AWESOME ride.
Beginner motorcycle riders (which apparently is common - I managed to find some) will make the ride very scenic. And slow.
Hopefully we'll have enough cars to be able to space out the ride and make it fun. Not wreckless, but fun.

It is not a racetrack, it's a public road. You might see semi's, campers, or just average folks going about their business. The speed limit is 30mph. It has become very popular, and has had periods of super intense police enforcement. There are well known speed traps in the area, but the enforcement is somewhat tempered by the tourist benefit to the area. Treat it like a racetrack and you and your license will regret it. Go to have a fun drive and you will be fine. There used to be informal times kept on a portion of it and the quickest average speeds were just over 60mph, so you should be able to have a good time without getting into stupid speeds.

Anybody have any in-car camera mounts to reccomend? I would like to video some of our cruise and events from my windshield or dash. I've got one ordered, just wondering what anyone else is using.
I can't recommend a mount to buy, but I can give you a look at the one I made. I used the swivel mount from an old tri-pod and had it welded to a chunk of aluminum. The drilled and tapped some holes for a pair of roll bar clamps. I think it came out pretty nice...

Thanks! Just the Chevelle this year. I'm giving the Elky a well earned rest.

Hey just wanna clear things.... the $15 is just for the cruise? or it for the dinner also?
And another thing, my wife and my sis's boyfriend also want to attend the dinner... what all payment is involved with that?

The cruise is free, it is a public road, dinners are $15 each.

Home-made camera mount. I'll be testing it out this year...
It's still a work in progress and I haven't tested it out yet. But it's coming to PF either way.
