i finally removed my power booster today and went for the first test drive and i wasnīt able to lock up my brakes even it was raining. the pedal felt just spongy and went all the way to the floor.
the camaro had a 1 1/8 master cylinder and after swapping to ssbc quick change front and standard disc in the back i got told here to swap a 1" bore mc. the difference was really huge and i felt for the first time it brakes better than before. i just didnīt feel comfortable about my electric vacuum pump cause it did not hold up vacuum for steady performance. pedal response felt really good and was firm so i thought its just not enough vacuum to lock the brakes and thatīs been the reason why i removed the booster today.
swap was really easy i just mounted the MC on the two upper booster studs. i used the old booster rod and fabricated it a little different to get it longer and that i can use the adjustable linkage that goes onto the brake pedal. brake pedal was perfect cause it already had another hole about 1" higher than the one used before.
i tried to adjust the length of the rod to get the master cylinder working faster but it seemed just to get some pressure to the brakes cause they smelled after doing the short testride.
like i said with the power booster the pedal was rockhard and now it is just spongy and i need to press it all the way to the floor to get the car slowing down. did i miss something? should i brake bleed the system again?

thanks

If your brake pedal is spongy, does it pump up and get hard after 3 fast pedal applications? This is an indication of air in the brake system. How much pedal play do you have before the rod actuates the MC? This is usually 1/4"- 1.2" depending on your set up and liking. Have you checked for external leaks? Have you double-checked your brake fluid level?

Your pedal travel will increase and your pedal effort will decrease with a smaller bore MC, but since your old MC had a booster I would imagine your pedal effort has increased a bit. I found the SSBC kit to be substandard for performance braking. It is also important to get a good burnish on your new pads before evaluating your brake performance.

play is now around 1/4" i tried it with no endplay but that ended in smelling brakes:smoke:
i checked fluid level but it irritates me that with the booster on i had a hard pedal and now without booster but nothing done on the MC it is spongy. could it be that i had air in the system before, but the booster assisted that much that i could not feel this?

I would bleed the brakes again and see if there is air trapped somewhere.

Also keep in mind your pedal travel will increase with the smaller bore and you may be mistaking it for a spongy pedal. I need to know if the pedal pumps up. Also check your caliper sliders as if they hang up a bit you will get a low pedal.

New pads need to be broken in before you get your maximum brake performance.

i did 2 more rounds of bleeding. 1 time with a vacuum bleeder and the last time with my bleeding tool. pedal got a little harder but still i can push it far down. i also took the pads off to see if they got glazed but they were in a good condidition. braking gets way better the hotter the brakes get so itīs probably the pads. but i can barely believe that ssbc puts that kind of pads on low budget brake kits.......iīll probably sell those quick change calipers and get some serious brakes.
