Hi Guys
I just installed a B & M Quicksilver (part # 80688) into my '77 Firebird with a 700R4 trans.

The car is not yet driving but in "dry shifting" I have had a few issues: First up, the shifter is very difficult (stiff) to manouvre/shift. Also, it seems to ratchet through two gears at times on both up and down shifts. In addition, it will not downshift into the lowest gear...ie, it selects three and not four speeds.

I have followed all instructions including the removal of the pin that allows conversion from three to four speed. I have also set the tranny cable with the transmission in park, so I do not believe that there is an alignment issue.

I am using the stock transmission cable that was there with the original TH350, changing the appropriate brackets etc with Shiftworks and Bow Tie Overdrives kits.

I have done a similar install before on my '70 T/A with a TH400 and it works flawlessly. What gives? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Rich

When I put my shifter in it took me quite awhile to get everything just right. I would put the trans and shifter in park and check to make sure the swivel slides in and out of the bracket for the trans selector nice and easy. Then I would put it in first and do the same. Then into nuetral. I have some vids I posted of the install. It was for a 200-4R but might still help.

Hey Stickman
Interesting videos. Saw a couple of possible areas where my problem could be..........will check them and let you know.

Thanks for sharing.

Paul67: is that also a Quicksilver shifter? If so, which spring are you referring to? Do you have a picture?

Have you gotten it sorted out? What was the problem?

Is there a stock shifter plate? Did you flatten the trans tunnel a bit where it is mounted? I've seen issues where the base would bend and cause gear binding issues if the tunnel was left with the stock radius.

there is a stock plate but when I check that and the tunnel floor relative to the shifter all seems OK.
I have been in touch with both B & M and Bowtie Overdrives and the feedback is suggesting that it is either a bracket or adjustment issue. Soooooooooo, I am going to try adjusting it again based on the procedure I have now been told to follow.

Will advise later.

Well, I tried everything that the "experts" at B & M and Bowtie Overdrives have told me to do. I finally saw a copy of B & M's installation instructions on their website.....and it's very simple: I need a different bracket and a new longer cable to make extra sure. I have ordered both. Once i get them I know it will be a breeze.

Will confirm in due course.

Well, I took a long time to get my stuff and then other priorieties stopped me from doing the bracket and cable swop.

Now that I have done it the results are as I suspected. Perfect operation of the shifter on the first try. I don't know what those "experts " were talking about.!! Just needed the right parts.
