This 6000lb fiberglass bondo clunker was for sale in CA. about 6 months ago in primer. Trying to make a quick buck off a paint job. No matter how much you polish a turd you still have a turd.

Raced since new so no title, but it never been raced thats for sure, also we have no history on the car except for that "raced since new" thing, also theres no title and its a racecar, but its really a show car.. did we mention the racing? also it runs&drives probably, and its definitely not stolen we just... well..history? no..ya we dont have any at all, it was raced since new....ya ya thats it... also we painted floors with a brush, Bob likes yellow and red, like McDonalds.......???

the shocks must have fallen off while racing.

it even looks like the leaf spring plates are on the wrong side. what appears to be a shock mount is on the outside of the spring. interesting.

I'm speechless... What would possess...? OMG! What a train wreck.

Oh. The shock is wearing off. I do have something to say...the guy who picked the colors wasn't color blind...he was just blind. I love the swiss-cheesed frame. I guess you don't care about flex when it hasn't been race, but it's an ex-racecar.

I'm suspicious that the current owner hoped the car would look like this when it was done:

Instead, it turned out like this...

Everybody and their brother try to say these old hack jobs are ex-racers. Without a "log book" and identifying numbers...these cars are worth almost NOTHING! This guy should not even mention it's an ex-racer until after the poor sucker picks up the car. A good friend got taken on a supposed ex-trans-am Camaro.

What racing series used an automatic tranny 40 years ago?

As you are aware, the beginning in the early days of pony car racing, the SCCA lured a fresh crop of budding drivers from other events who would later become the leaders in SCCA racing. In 1966, SCCA initiated their automatic class in a feeble attempt to lure away potential future greats from the highly popular drag racing series. It was an experimental class that SCCA hoped to meld in with other classes once it was determined the automatics would be competitive with their manual cousins. Rules were similar to the manual cars. In addition, they had to of course run an automatic transmission, drag slicks on all four corners, and the stock fuel pump.

But the series was fraught with peril starting in 1967 when Smokey Yunick entered 2 vehicles. It turns out, Smokey had invented the first CVT transmission allowing him to dominate the first three official races. After being disqualified, Smokey returned with the first experimental paddle-shifted vehicles and was again quickly rebuked. Thus he pulled out from the series completely. This also prompted officials to mandate all vehicles must use pure mechanical means of shifting (whether through self-shifting or the driver physically moving the gear lever). The bold move now made the Chrysler push-button automatics favored by drag racers and known for their lightning quick shifting and roadtrack handling prowess, to also be banned.

At the beginning of the 1968 year for the series, cars were converted from the previous season by only changing the tail pan. Problems continued as the series now known as SCAAA was sued by the American Automobile Association who raised concerns the name of the series was infringement and might be misinterpreted as advocating racing by club members. The final straw came in mid-season by a horrendous two car crash. Two former drag racers, Tommy Noturns and Buddy Bracket were racing side-by-side on a straight away. Caught up in the action, they momentarily forgot there was a hairpin curve at the end, causing one of the most spectacular crashes in racing history, had anyone cared enough to be there to photograph the event.

This prompted SCCA to ban the series altogether, never to return again.

Thanks folks, I'm here all week. Try the veal and don't forget to tip your waiter.

Wow.......what a mess.

I was the one that saw the primered version of this car on eBay some months ago and said it had "potential"......I meant that in the lightest of terms.....

"Potential" to me meant a fully-murdered-out black primer job and some big wheels with a killer stance............spend no more than $100 on parts and labor and thrash the s out of it........not do what these guys did.....:hammer:

that Buick steering wheel will probaly be a deal sincher for those bidding on it!

And since this thread has semi-imploded, I now post a series of gulf livery shots, purely in order to remind us why it is one of the coolest paint schemes ever.

Personal favorite of the group right there.

Definitely right about the Gulf Livery being one of the coolest and classic paint schemes of all time. I remember having Matchbook cars and slot cars in the Gulf livery. Always loved 'em. I also like the Flying Lizards livery but that one is still relatively new.
