Well it started off with the horrible accident massa had and it appears he will be ok although it is unsure wether he will ever race again. There are all kinds of reports out there about his real condition so it's hard to tell. But coming off that news is that Michael Schumacher will come out of retirement to drive for Ferrari. That is huge news and will really boost F-1. But all is not good in F-1 land. It seems BMW is pulling out at the end of the year when their contract ends. After honda pulling out this year I also think there will be others with Toyota possibly next. Toyota has one of the highest budgets in F-1 and very little to show for it. We will see i suppose.

It would appear that there will be no lack of teams participating in F1 next year, as there are SEVERAL new proposed teams looking to join the series, including at least one US based team (one of the key members of which is Peter Windsor, the guy that comentates on the pre race grid on Speed for the F1 races....).
Bummer about BMW Sauber pulling out though, and if Toyota also pulls out, this will require a new rule set for engine suppliers (previously each engine supplier had been allowed to supply engines to only two teams, that changed this year with Mercedes). Kubica will be on the short list of highly sought after drivers.
Also, keep in mind that although Honda pulled out last year, that team was purchased by Brawn Racing. And they happen to have won 6 of the 9 races this year, with Button in a stronghold on the driver's championship, so a bit of change could be good. Hell, the Toyota factory team sure isn't doing crap!!!

F1 needs to open it up so that anyone that can build a car that fits the rules can attempt to qualify to compete. bring in fresh blood and actual competition.
it just seems kind of elitist now...

It's been elitist for a long time.
Don't get me wrong , I love F1 racing.
It's just that , unless you are part of the established community in F1 , you'll never get anywhere in the sport.
It's that way with a lot of high level sports .....

but at least in most of the other motorsports they let you bring a car to the track and try to make the field.
i think F1's greatest fear is that some small team of people from outside their little club will come in and show them how it's done.
