Come on guys... We all know it has been a long time since the NASCAR's interpretations of various cars were actual representation of the Public model. And the fact that Ford is not Ford, Chevy Is not Chevy..LOL NASCAR is the Pro Wrestling of auto racing and has been for a long time... ha ha That is hideous though, I cant believe Ford would allow that.. It almost looks like a Taraus with a different grill.

Give Ford credit for doing a pretty good job of making generic body look like a Mustang. By NASCAR rules all manufacturers have to use the same body in Cup and Nationwide (they did this to level the playing field (boring), they are also considering spec engines (more boring), and they woder why they are losing attendance, can't blame the economy because it has been going on for the last few years. Even though I'm a GM man I have to give Ford credit for keeping Obama from taking over their company too.

in what kind of a strange imaginary wonderland do they live in that they believe that anyone will think that is a Mustang?
it has the size and proportions of something that kinda sorta resembles a 4 door midsize sedan, and last i checked, a Mustang is not even close to being that.

Jeez, what an insult to NASCAR and Ford fans. Hope Ford marketing is on a bonus scheme that can SUBTRACT from their pay.

I don't watch NASQueer but heard a driver who had just taken the checkered flag on the radio in a clip. He said something to the effect that he was proud of the
' Wrangler Jeans, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Farmers Insurance, M&M/Twix' car for bringing him to the winners circle. '
Right then it was reaffirmed to me that it is the dumbest "sport" in the world.

The Grand Am Koni GS Series has a bunch or "real" Mustangs roadracing !
I saw the race recently at Barber Motorsports Park.
It was awesome.
Next year , some teams are supposed to be working New Camaros and New Challengers into the mix.
I can only hope.

def. a result of having to get drag/downforce numbers (front and back) in the wind tunnel in line with all the other bodies in the series......if not it wont have a hope in h ell of keeping up with the pack.....you gotta admit that retro Mustand front end isnt the most areodynamic.....def not pretty

They believe that the same people that think the Toyotas, Fords, Dodges and GMs that are currently running both series are real will also believe that they are looking at real Mustangs. I have seen two different makes of these cars without the vinyl and they both look identical, at least the NHRA allows the mfg. to build a Pro Stock body that resembles the claimed model.

the solution is to make all the cars run all stock sheetmetal and a nose with the same shape as stock, but without all that fragile plastic stuff like the lights and grille. the chassis can remain pretty much the same as what they use now, but with changes to fit within the stock envelope.
if the Camaro is faster than the Mustang and Challenger, then the factories figure out what to do to the production car to make the NASCAR version faster. this is the way it was done back in the day- the winged Mopars of the late 60's/early 70's and 80's Monte Carlo SS and Grand Prix 2+2 are examples of this.
they should also let them run race versions of what they actually run in the real world- this means efi and LS engines in the Camaros, Hemis in the Challengers, mod motors in the Mustangs, and whatever Toyota has for an engine in their Camry..

The (in my opinion) ugly redeisgn of the Mustang this year is all making sense now. The body got a lot more swoopy with protruding rearend. They did it for aerodynamics so it would be better on the track and look a little closer to what NASCAR had to change in order to make it competitive.
ooooh...wait a minute. Racing has never influenced a manufacturer to change the design of a car body...or has it. I can't remember. :)

The day I watch nascar is the day I can walk down to the local Chevy dealership (if its not shut down) and buy a new 2 door rwd impala with a sbc, hell it doesn't even have to be 700hp or have a carb.

NASCAR has plenty of flaws and is easy to make fun of. Ok, fine.
To make extreme statements about lack of talent or sponsor saturation shows a degree of ignorance.
Running at those kinds of speeds around an oval is intense. Today I broke the 100 mph barrier in going through turns 1 and 2 at Fontana (yesterday I had worked up to carrying about 95mph. More rubber on the track today helped the cause.) Lifting mid corner unloads the rear of the car and causes rotation and then lack of grip and then a trip towards the wall. Any rear wheel slip while cornering at 100 mph was easily exciting enough to take all of my concentration. Trying to guide one of those NASCAR tube frame hulks through there at 160 mph while jockeying for position with other cars, holding a line, not scrubbing speed, and not upsetting the dynamics of the car is not an easy thing. And that's at 160 mph. To put that in perspective, a car of going 160 has over 2.5 times as much kinetic energy as a car of the same weight going 100 mph. That all boils down to more work for the tires and far less control. Oval racing and its seemingly straightforward nature is an art whether you prefer it or not.
As for sponsorship, NASCAR is a victim of its own success. Any other given racing series would love to have enough attention to get mainstream sponsorship. It's not like the series "sold out" or any such thing. Like it or not, Pro racing is about money just as much as it is about any actual racing.
And yes, that Mustang is hideous. It's exactly the reason I was not happy to hear that the Nationwide series might run "Mustangs" and "Challengers".
For the record, my favorite racing Series is the ALMS and coming in close second is the Koni Challenge series. I usually loosely follow NASCAR but just haven't had the free Sundays for it recently. That and Fox now airs F1 (which is exciting now because cars not painted red are allowed to win.)

That looks like a Lumina with a different grill. How can they even call it a Mustang? Just because they chose to use the name? It looks NOTHING like any production Mustang I have ever seen. Pretty silly.

i don't think anyone has said it isn't intense or diffcult to do, but from the standpoint of the fan- the people that really pay for all this stuff- it is boring to watch a bunch of identical cars run around in circles with too many rules keeping them from really duking it out.
NASCAR used to use all stock looking cars- the fenders, doors, roof, hood, trunklid, and quarter panels were actual production stampings (or had to have the same shape as factory parts) up until about 10 years ago. i think they even had to use oem floor pans, too. all the windows had to have the same shape as the stock parts, but were made out of lexan for safety.
there is no reason why they couldn't go back to that today and have different cars that you can tell apart on the other side of the track at 200mph, while keeping all the modern safety stuff intact.

Believe me, I'd love for it to go back to the production hot rod format.
