View Full Version : How's this for a budget Camaro suspension setup?

After doing quite a bit of research on here and talking to several people on the phone, I think I have a pretty good idea of what kind of suspension parts I will put on my 68 Camaro. Any feedback would be great....

GW Cat 5 springs for the back
SC&C Street Comp Stage 2 plus kit (adjustable upper arm and tall ball joints)
Del-A-Lum bushings
Solid body mounts
DSE subframe connectors
Bilstein shocks
Springs (???)
Moog replacement parts (if needed)

This is on a budget, so I know there are better parts out there, but I'm thinking this set up should make the car handle much better than original and maybe close to a newer sports car, that's the goal...

I already have a 3rd gen power steering box (87 IROC I think) with a new pump. Already have decent disc brakes in the front, but will upgrade them and put disc brakes on the back too...A local shop told me they can get McGaughy's 13" disc brake kits for around $600 for the front and $500 for the back.

Thanks!

I also have a 68 that I have been wondering the same questions about.....

What do you figure the whole set-up will run?

Also have you read good things about McGaughy's 13" disc brake kits? Looking for alternatives to Baer, Wilwood and SSBC, as I also am on a fixed budget for my project.

Well,
GW Cat 5 leaf springs are on sale now for $825
Street Comp Stage 2 + kit is $715
Del-A-Lum bushings for the LCAs are $135
DSE body mounts are $110
DSE subframe connectors are $185
DSE 2" drop springs are $87
DSE front sway bar is $210

I'm not sure about Bilstein shocks yet, and I'm not sure what if any parts would need to be replaced with Moog parts...

I haven't been able to find much info on the McGaughy brake kits....The guy at a local shop (MuscleRoad in Madera, CA) told me about them in the context of being cheaper than Wilwood brakes, he is a dealer for them too...I haven't done a whole lot of research yet, but I hope to find some ideas before I spend any money on them.

what about your McGaughy's 13" disc brake kits

I think that combination of parts is likely to achieve at least the level of improvement you're looking for, possibly exceed it.

For brakes, I don't know this McGaughy's stuff you're discussing but I do know that the C5/C6 stuff works very well on a street car, and may not cost much more in the end. It's worth a look anyway.

Go with the SC&C AFX package, and get C5/6 brakes from Kore3. You'll sopend more, but get a whole lot more.

True, you really can't go wrong with that choice. It's what I did and I can attest that I love it. Handles great, stops REALLY well...what more do you need?

The guy at the shop said the front kit is about $600 and the rear is about $500...I just don't anything about that company or the actual quality of their product...I've been "bit" before when I bought the cheaper alternative and then had to buy again a little while down the road...it's just hard to buy the "best" product when you're on a fairly tight budget, but I guess if you spend the money on the better product it only hurts once, instead of several more times when you have to re-do things later on....

There's enough people on here who are MUCH more knowledgeable than me (that's a real understatement)...and if they are saying go with the AFX and C5/C6 brakes, I think I should probably just wait a little longer, save up some extra money, and go with what's recommended by the crew on here...
