View Full Version : Second Skin needs help naming new thermal product - $250 gift code

Second Skin Rep
07-22-2009, 12:29 PM
As usual, Second Skin is doing its best to bring new and exciting products to the market.
This one is certainly no exception.
Over the years we have a had a lot of street rod and race car customer come to us looking for a product that could withstand the high temperatures on the engine side of the firewall. Some cars reach levels of 1000 degrees f. and for this application, we had no product to offer them.

Now we are about 8 weeks out from releasing our newest thermal insulation mat.
This new material is a multi layer composite that can withstand temperatures in excess of 1000 degrees when as little as 2 inches of air space is provided between the heat source and the product.

At ¼ inch thick and weighing in at .25 lbs per sq foot this is going to be our best thermal insulation material yet.

The foil is about 12 mils thick with a dimpled texture to increase surface area.
The Organic fibers are capable of withstanding temperatures over 1000 degrees, and the pressure sensitive adhesive is an acrylic hybrid that will grip on to any painted or primed metal surface, as well as plastic.

When subjected to a heat source of 1200 degrees the opposite side of the panel will get reduced to around 350 f.
When subjected to a heat source in the 300 degree range, the opposite side of the panel will get reduced to around 85 f. or so.

Not only can it be used on the engine side of the firewall, but it can also be used under the car, above the exhaust or transmission to block external heat as well.

Now, all we have to do is come up with a name for it.
That is where you come in. We are offering a $250 gift code to the first person that suggests the name that we decided to use.
We are posting this offer on several different forums and will be selecting a winner in the next month or so.
We have about 8 weeks before the product is ready to ship so we can take our time and wait for the right name to show up.

Thanks for your help!

I'd callit something simple....

"FIREwall" comes to mind....could make a cool logo with the Fire part in all bold lettering on fire and then the wall writing in lowercase and blue and chilly looking.

A while ago we had a contest, to help name our newest thermal mat.
Well, it toook about a year, and we never chose a name.
Right now, the name is generically called Thermal Block.
You can see it on the Second Skin sound deadening website here:
http://www.secondskinaudio.com/viewproduct.php?id_product=355
Since we never selected a winner, we decided to give away a bunch of free product to the members of the Pro-touring forum.
Up for grabs is 10 sheets of our thermal insualtion mat, Thermal Block.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Thermal Block is the best thermal barrier we offer.
This self adhesive mat is designed to face the heat source directly to reflect and dissipate heat. Lets say your headers get up to 1000 degrees f.
When applied on the engine side of the firewall, with just 2 inches of airspace between the headers and the Thermal Block, the opposite side of the thermal block will measure only 300 degrees f.
When subjected to 300 degrees f. the opposite side will measure in around 90 degrees f.

It is self adhesive, and looks awesome!

Each sheet on our site is $80, plus shipping.
For this promotion we are giving away 10 sheets FREE, all we ask of the winners is that they pay shipping charges.

If you are interested here are the rules
1. Must have a post count of 25 on the pro-touring forum-
2. Must be a Pro-touring forum member for minimum of 3 months
3. Must install all of the products we provide
4. Must install the products within 6 weeks of getting them
5. Must take a minimum of 8 pictures of the installation, and post a build log on this forum, plus one other automotive related website within 2 weeks of installing the products.
6. Cannot sell these products or use them in more than 1 car, the car that you own
7. Must have a US shipping address and agree to pay for shipping charges
8. Must contact us within 72 hours of the contests end if you are selected as a winner
If you agree and qualify to these terms, please post the following information in this thread:
1. Post your user name
2. State that you qualify to the terms and agree to follow through with them as they are written above.
3. Post a description of your car
4. If you plan on helping promote Second Skin, please including the other web site you will post your build log in.
5. You must tell us something about yourself that nobody on this forum knows about you
We will select the winners next week
Thank you everyone for your attention and participation

Let me ask this.....What do you think about using a small piece of this as a heat shield for the back of your hand/glove while welding? There is a product available that some of my guys use already, but was wondering if this might be better.

From the look of it, that might be a silicone/teflon glove.
Those are insine for heat reduction!! Expensive material to use in a car though. I would opt for that if I could get some!

Sorry in advance for whining like a little bitch, but..... Everyone who signed up plus 3 who didn't sign up win. Everyone but me that is.
I know it was a contest and I know that there are winners and losers in every contest, just kinda sad that the loser was me.

Yes, sorry I hadn't posted it yet, but I had not had a chance to do anything with it. It looks mean for sure! I've already told a dude on the HAMB to call you for a turbo that is in an A, and under the dash!

Got it and took a look at it but have had no time to mess with the car since it arrived. I am also debating on if I should use it on the firewall or under the car above the x pipe or mufflers.

It's still sitting by my kitchen right now.....sorry but I'm trying to decide where to put it and in which car to get the most benifet from it. On the 69 it needs to be everywhere, and the 58 I'm just not sure where it would be noticed the most.
I WILL let y'all know tho!

I am just finishing the underside of my car to drop it back on the frame and am wondering if this mat will stick to a semi rough surface like Lizard skin? I am shooting a coat of wurth underbody seal on top of the Lizard Skin that should smooth it a bit. Spraying the Wurth coating over the mat wouldn't work, would it?

Lizard skin is a water based coating, so if you are going to apply a sound deadening mat like Damplifier Pro on top of it, you should make sure that the coating is cured first. Otherwise, you run the risk of trapping water in the Lizard skin, and promoting rust. Not something you want in a car!

The best way to do it is by applying the Damplifier Pro first, then a noise barrier like our Luxury Liner Pro on top of that. The coatings, like Lizard skin or our Spectrum coatings are best used on the underside of the vehicle (which it sounds like you are doing) no real reason to use Damplifier Pro under tre car.

Hope that helps!
