View Full Version : LT1 or LS1 brakes...

What are the minimum wheel diameters required for either of these setups front and rear? What are the rotor diameters for them? I've read just about all I can find and it seems everyone has gone with 17" wheels minimum. I have 15 x 7 rallyes on a 67 camaro and would like to have good brakes without having to wait several more months just to get wheels to allow for it. Hopefully someone can provide me with some good news. The car will be my daily driver and occasionally see some autocross fun.

I believe 16" (with the right offset clearence) wheel are the minimum as this was the standard wheel size for these cars. From what I have seen, any disk that is bigger then 11.5" won't clear a 15" wheel. Basically it's a caliper clearence issue. Bigger the rotor, the more the caliper is pushed out, hence the bigger wheel diameter to clear it. Even with a larger wheel, it doesn't guarantee clearence as Torque Thurst II's can have issues with the spokes hitting the caliper.

Thanks for the info chevymike. I figured as much. What is the minimum you guys recommend on the front and on the rear as far as rotor size? Will the LT1 or LS1 brakes be sufficient for occasional "oops, I hit this off ramp a bit fast" stops and once a month autocross outings? I remember my brakes fading rather easily on my Sebring LXI and don't want to create a similar situation, BUT I also don't want to put a bunch of money where I don't need it. I plan to duct air to the brakes, but not sure just how much that would help.
As far as size, you know... I'd rather be a LITTLE overkill than under when it comes to brakes.

you can fit a 15" wheel on LT1 rears and a 16" is the smallest on a LS1 without mods or a set of bogart wheels....I'm running the LS1 rears with CL205s with no clearance issues caliper wise

One of the biggest factors I have found over the years is not so much the rotor size (not that that is not important) but having very good pads and fresh, good quality fluid. Having the system bled properly plays a very big part as well. Things like braided lines help but only if the above items are done right. Good pads are not cheap. These would be like Porterfield, Hawk and such, not ones you tipically find at your local auto parts store. Also making sure your current rotors are in good shape and not glazed over.

As for your Sebring, if these brakes are anything like most Chrysler products I have driven, the pad compound sucks! They do not take heat well and will start to fade fairly easy. Most pads that are made for high mileage suck when you start to really push them.

I'm running LS1 fronts and LT1 rears. 16 inch wheels in front and anything smaller would NOT fit. I have 17s on the rear.....could fit 16s.

Hey guys ,

Looking to possibily install a set of LS1 brakes on my 55 Bel-Air. What exactly is involved , and is their a company out their that sells basic kits for the conversion ??
