View Full Version : Good EFI system for a Pontiac 455?

In a 76 Trans-Am?

I have a guy looking to PT the car and wants to keep the Pontiac Mill.. Im not completly savy with Pontiac motors so I thought I would ask :)

I know his oil system would be fine on a mildly built motor and all he would need is a good high volume oil pump. For fuel he could just have his factory tank modified with some baffles and a constant pressure fuel pump..

But what about the fuel injection unit?

Thoughts...

Not sure of any kits but it can be pieced together.

Check these out.

This thread may help

Any system could be adapted, depends on the funds available.

Hope these help

thanks.. I was more curious about kits.. I think the 455 is just different enough from a chevie to not take their kits..

Edelbrock make an EFI version of their victor manifold, although they don't list Pontiac in their fuel injection kits - you might start there...

Steve,

Most road racing Pontiac cars that I have seen always had an oil accumulator. Most likely its because there are no good road racing pans available. I remember when I had the Pontiac engine in my GTO, it would loose oil pressure even during mild turns.

Canton makes a good roadrace pan for a traditional pontiac engine. I have one that was on my 78 T/A and now will be used on my 67 Bird. 50-80 mph on right hand turns would cause a loss of oil pressure, until this pan was installed. Then, no loss of pressure due to the trap doors and baffles around the pickup. Rance fuel injection makes a bolt on efi setup for Poncho engines.

Select manifold types for pricing on the pontiac.

There was another company Tiger EFI, not sure if they are still around or not. The link I had for them is dead.

do like car craft did in years past and use a f.a.s.t system with bungs welded in a single plane manifold

I put my own kit together as none exists for a Pontiac. I've got all the details posted on my website: My Website (http://home.woh.rr.com/firebird67/efi.htm)

It's nearly 100% bolt on. I went with an Accel Gen7 w/WBO2 but I think the newer FAST is equally good. As for building the lower end and heads, these guys can't be beat: Kauffman Racing Equipment (http://www.krepower.com/)

I haven't gotten it fully tuned yet, but it runs swell and made 529 HP/559 ftlb with undersized injectors (Edelbrock's fault).

Edelbrock has several manifolds now available. The Super Victor uses conventional injectors while the plain Victor uses Edelbrock's pico injectors. Tiger has yet to produce a manifold, but Pacific Performance is coming out with one that has machinable injector bosses. I would go with one of the off-the-shelf Edelbrocks though.

The only thing I would change on mine is the throttle body. I don't think the Kinsler is worth the money and I have several small issues with it. I'd probably go with a Holley if I could.

The road race pan is a good piece but you also need to watch the rest of the oil system. There are a couple of books that detail the oil system mods that should be made to a Poncho.

I'm not knocking the Rance kit, but it's a lot of money for a kit where you need to send your manifold to them for mods. You can copy my system and have the same thing for a lot less.
