So I went out to the car yesterday, figuring I'd go for a quick jaunt to the local parts store to get some "spinner" hubcaps for my friends wife's car. I jump in, turn the key to hear the electric pump run a bit till it bogs, so I know I have fuel, press the pedal down, release it and fire her up. I pop the hood to do the leak checks, and then she dies. I jump back in, and crank her over, she fires for 3-5 sec and dies again. Then I notice the silence. Fuel pump isn't running. Grab a DMM and check for volts. Good. Fuel pump is shot.
So I'm going to pull the pump tonight and pull it apart, hoping it just got gummed up, since it probably only has MAYBE 50 hours on it. I've heard nasty things about these pumps going south quickly lately due to poor quality control on Holley's part. But I've been thinking about plumbing up a new system anyway, and was wondering this:
If I get a new 22gal Road Race fuel cell from fuel safe, what is the optimum fuel pump type and location? the Fuel Safe has all of their fittings on the top of the tank, does that hamper syphoning to the pump at all? I pretty much plan to hack a hole into the trunk floor and play around with scales to determine optimum location. My current setup has the stock tank with the Holley red pump mounted beside the tank, hanging from the frame rail, with the base hanging below the tank. I have no pre-pump filter (which I think may have cause the gum up) and a summit canister type/10 micron fliter after the pump.
