What would you say was the most popular 'hot rod' wheels in the late 1960's?

WTF! With the fast and the furious crap?

Is there a problem with a 30 year old asking about a time that was before his?

I ask because I want to put a period correct wheel on my bone stock 1961 belair.

I did not think that was such a big deal.

I am not some dmb kid getting on here asking about naws or some crap like that.

Thanks DB Z28.

I was thinking along those lines.

calm down calm down!.. i wasnt calling you a kid.. besides.. im the same age as you my friend.

i just play around alittle more than you..

i would stick to the classics.. RALLEYS.
or redline tires with steelies and dogdish caps.

but really.. is this the place to ask that type of question?
Id think you would do better asking on Jalopy Journal. www.jalopyjournal.com
then go to the H.A.M.B hokey ass message board..
the racers from the years youre looking for are actually posting on that site.. go on there and make a post.. youll
get the best answers you could ever ask for.. and probably a story behind it.

back to it..

Where I live, Torq-Thrust D's were v. popular(We called them "Old Style Americans"). A close copy are the Torq-Thrust Originals (TTO) currently being made by American.

Another v. popular wheel was the plain old aluminum slot. I can't believe you don't see this wheel much anymore.

Another common wheel was the so-called "Chrome Reverse". Hated!

Cragars were popular. Hated them too.

American Racing Torque Thrust D's or Cragar S/S 's .

Ahh - the good years!

My friends and I had: Fenton, Cragar and slotted wheels on 1st gens, my 58 Impala, a friend's 62 Impala, another friend's 57 chevy. We also tinted the headlights blue, wired the reverse lights to always be on!

I love reverse rims on 55-57 Chevys even 58's

I think they'd look good on your car,

In my neck of the woods the Cragar SS and Keystone classics were the big ones in the late sixties with cast aluminum slots coming in a close third. During the early to mid sixties I'd say the aluminum slots were the first choice with chrome reverse rims coming in second.
Mixing different wheels on the front and rear seemed to have a small following during the mid sixties. Probably because the drag racers were doing it.

Cragar SS, you could still see some of the chrome reverse wheels with the baby moons. Yes Keystone classic were popular too. You've got to take into consideration there wasn't nearly the choice we have now. thing is I still like the Cragar SS. But then I'm in my mid 50's...well maybe a couple of years older than that..

It seemed to me that cast aluminum slot mags (Fenton, etc.) were all the rage, replacing Cragar S/S mags as the wheel of choice.

Chrome reverse wheels were still around, but falling out of favor. If you didn't have the coin for the new 'slot mags' you settled for the chrome reverse wheels, usually with baby moon caps.

Chromed steel versions of the slot mags were sold by JC Penny at their Auto Center. We used to check out their cool wide tires inside the showroom, they even sold their own brand of drag racing slicks.:smoke:

I turned 10 years old in '69, got my first subscription to HOT ROD magazine in early '71. I can remember the '70 Camaros when they first came out, we didn't like the way they looked compared to the first-gens. :machine: As 11 year-olds we had very discriminating tastes in cars.

My best friend at the time had an older brother who drove a '63 Impala (327 Powerglide), he put a pair of glasspacks on it and we all thought it was so cool.

We were very heavily involved in 1/25 scale model car building, we both entered a model car contest in 1971 sponsored by the local 7-11 stores. My contest entry beat my friend's entry, I was the store winner in the 11-13 year old category. :) He and his older brother were pissed because his older brother actually built his car.:bsjerk:

I know the OP asked about late '60s, but this sounds just like the early-mid 70s also. everyone wanted cragars, 'deep dish' of course, 60s in back, 70s up front. everyone thought the 60 meant it was wider.
of course, then you needed gabriel hijackers to clear the fender.
lots of guys could only afford one pair at a time, so you'd see a lot of stock steelies up front w/ the brand new deep dish wheels out back.
the WORST is, some guys are STILL building their cars like this; I swear, some people stopped paying attention after high school. there is a '73 nova near my job, all jacked up, FAT deep dish cragars and clamp on 'ladder bars'. hideous.

"chrome reverse rims with whitewall slicks,
she turns the quarter mile at 106,
door handles are off but you know I'll never miss 'em,
she opens when I want with the solenoid system!"

whose old enough to name the song?
