View Full Version : Opinion before cutting a perfectly good Goodmark cowl hood.....

While at the junk yard today I picked up some Grand Prix GTP hood vents. And am debating putting them in my cowl hood. What do you think?

Here is the hood vent:

Now which position?

Position 1:

Or Position 2:

Is the car running?

If so do a string test to see where the airflow is the least turbulent. I think you'll find that the location you have selected is close enough to the windscreen that the pressure increase is going to disturb airflow. This will decrease the efficacy of the vents. I'd wager that you'll find that a location about 1.5'.2' further forward will give you a better result.

Remember that its the faster and smoother the air is flowing the lower the pressure will be. It is this low pressure that will draw the hot air through the vent.

Ah good point. So "string test", what take a bunch of 3" pieces & tape them to the hood & go drive it?

Yup. 3" or so bits of yarn held down with tape. Lay out a 6"x6" grid on 1/2 of the hood then observe how they behave at different speeds.

It might help to have a passenger snap a couple of photos at various speeds.

Can't wait to hear the response to this:

"Hey honey, go for a ride with me & take pics of the hood."

LOL

I'd fix that big azz dent in the front first. :ssst: :poke:

Yeah, using tufts (yes, that's the technical aviation term) will show how the air is flowing across the hood.

If you do it, I think position 1 looks better. following the body lines, not the scoop line front-back.

It looks a lot worse than it really is, the angle of the photo makes it look worse. But I have already fixed it, d@mn fiberglass/urethane.

That is the position I am leaning towards.

It's all a matter of personal preference.

I think you'll be adding on something that just won't look right no matter how you arrange them on the hood. Keeping it clean and simple is better.

Again, that's just my personal opinion.

Good luck with your decision.

I would leave it stock, but if you were to do it, I would make sure and paint them the same as the hood so they blend well.

They could be cool, but I like the simple and straight to the point stuff personally.

Its your car, so build it to suit you! That rendering looks killer.

If you are going to do it, put them where they will WORK or don't do it at all.

just wondering... leave them where they are and turn them around 180*. Just wondering what it would look like with the scoop line reversed.

carry on. :)

They'd look non-functional.

I'll be honest, only put them on if they work because I really don't like them. They look out of place.

I am tinkering with the same idea, I think they need to be bigger and follow the lines of the hood a little, like the hood on some of the newer vipers...

Please don't.... Gonna look like a 18 year old kids car that have been to the local speed shop and bought styling for his Hoinda without having money....

I did have them painted when I had the hood painted, but didn't cut the hood to install them. I do still like the idea, but the angles/lines just didn't quite match the hood. And I cannot turn them around 180 degrees because then it would force air down into the engine bay instead of "sucking" it out, rather have low pressure in the engine bay instead of added pressure.

leave them off- or if you do put them on get 2 more matched sets for brake vents- that would look super cool
