View Full Version : American Autocross Series - Marina, CA - July 4th and 5th

James OLC

For anyone who is interested, the American Autocross Series (AAS (http://www.americanauto-x.com/)) is holding a two day event at the Marina Airport (north of Monterey) on the weekend of July 4th and 5th.

Since I have a rubber arm, Mary Pozzi has been able to convince me to bring the OneLapCamaro out for the weekend. Since the AAS was built around older muscle cars, I have been told that the courses are a little bit better suited for bigger cars like Camaros, Corvettes, and Mustangs. We have a pretty sizable list of things that we need to address on the car to get it ready but with some luck we should be ready for a fun weekend. We'll be a little bit challenged in the tire deparment and my driving will definately be a limiting factor but it should be a blast!

(thanks to David and Mary for convincing me to come down and for their always appreciated help and support)

Might have to go to that :)

It looks like it should be a lot of fun and it gives us another chance to see if we are going in the right direction with our changes. For me, it's going to be a bit like taking a knife to a gun fight... but at least it's a sharp knife.

I think we will do pretty good. I think our cars have caught up to the new cars of today. I'm having mine tuned again this weekend and should be ready for the july 4th weekend if I go. I would like to know what class we would be in. VSP perhaps. Tires im sure would have something to do with class though. I need to change mine anyways.

Tires (for me) will definately be an issue - I don't know if they factor into classes on not but mine are going to be on the comparably hard side of things for this one. On top of that were working on a new calibration for the ECU, changing master cylinders to get more rear brake, and adjusting the rear bar a bit... and we have to rewire the coil packs... and those are just the major things. Lots of work to do but everything should help.

Yes...150-200k in attendance,mostly bikes...them guys are loyal!
Good thing about Marina is it's on the outskirts of all that activity but still...roads will be jammed...and the cops are out in FULL FORCE.

AAS will be running from 9am and will probably end around 4pm each day. Coming from Santa Cruz, take Hwy 1 south and exit off of Reservation Rd. Turn left at the stop and then turn right at the 7-11 (Wal-Mart parking lot) as Reservation Rd. changes route there.

Follow Reservation Rd. thru Marina and you'll leave town. At Imjin Rd. (signal), turn left. You'll go about an eighth of a mile, stop at a controlled intersection (why it's controlled is a mystery to me), and then turn right at the next driveway (near a hangar). You'll see cones and cars once you turn into the parking lot behind the hangar.

Hope to see you there and look for James Shipka's One-Lap Camaro and my '73.

I can't seem to find the entry fee info on that site. Am I a spaz or is it not intuitive?

Hey!

This just popped up on the AAS site:

7/2/2009
LATE BREAKING NEWS!!
Set this date aside!!!! July 25-26, 2009
We are in negotiations with Great America in Santa Clara, it is very possible that we may get a weekend for two events on July 25-26, we should know by July 10th if that will happen.
Stay tuned for more information, we will post here first, as soon as we get confirmation.

Damn True

Yup, spaz. Found it:

The American Auto-X Series is an autocross organization, organizing a 16 event series per year. The series caters to the "American Iron", so therefore the courses are designed somewhat wider than most autocrosses across the nation. The series founder, Larry Park, loved Corvettes, and really enjoyed making them go faster and faster, and since Corvettes need more room to get that horsepower to the pavement, we will continue in that tradition as long as time will allow.
General things to know about AAS:

* There are no membership dues for AAS events, cost is $50.00 per event. We start at 9:00am and try to give everyone 5 runs as long as time permits, and you must work one rungroup per entry. Registration generally opens at 8:00am and is open all day Saturday and till 2:00pm on Sundays.
* Helmets are required, Snell M or SA 95 or newer. There are some loaners available.
* We have a once a year technical/safety inspection, once your car passes tech, you will get a tech sticker which must be displayed, and visible from a short distance.
* Class structure is based on SCCA classes, however not all SCCA classes are offered individually, there are some that are lightly subscribed, so they are combined and indexed. We do not allow Karts.
* You must have a valid drivers license to compete and there are minimum age (16) limits for AAS competitors. Those who are under 18 years old must have a signed parents consent form, and also must have a minors waiver form signed.

The One Lap Camaro was astounding, and it was so great to see it in action...The way it should be. Thanks James. I got a rides from the Autocross Masters themselves Dave & Mary in the Beast, and the smile still remains. It accelerates like nothing I've been in before and David told me it wasn't on the cam yet!

The AAS course was very fast and wide catering to larger more powerful PT type cars. The turnout of real CP cars was noteworthy. What a great way to spend the 4th.

It was definately an awesome weekend! We picked up a TON today - the result of some last minute changes to the rear suspension. There were some awesome cars out there as well, including TAZ - the Gulf '67 - which wound up being in our class. The American Autocross Series group was incredible - we got a total of 40 runs in the OLC over the two days (talk about hot lapping). Ton's of fun which, as always, I couldn't have had without the help and guidance of Dave and Mary - thanks guys!

That's great that the car is dialed in. Even with the understeer troubles it was still daunting. Those One Lap and Optima Battery guy's have something to fear. You have the right Team.

Thanks for running the car for what it was built for, so those of us who were lucky enough to be there got to see it in action. I hope you start a trend.

What changes were made to the rear suspension to get it working better on Sunday?

We had the absolute best time and all feel much more comfortable behind the wheel of James' "One-Lap" Camaro now. Turned some very quick times today and with better (read stickier) tires, the car would have gone from amazing to WOW. Still some tweaking and playing to do but the bulk of this is done!!!

Musclecarjohn came out and brought his wife who promptly planted herself in my '73 and got a few E-ticket rides in return. She was grinning ear-to-ear and methinks she might even entertain running John's Focus or her Honda in the future ... we'll see. We both had a blast and laughed most of the way around the course.

Running street tires kept me about a second slower than James Camaro but I love these Kumho Ecsta XS's and can attest to their performance for us with larger, heavier cars. Plus they make 'em in "our" sizes and Kumho's don't break the bank. Very fun to open the garage door, start the car and drive to the event, compete, and then drive home.

It was great to see True and meet other Pro-Touring members there. I met Deanna at Pleasanton GoodGuys and she brought her '67 Chevelle down. While she was a bit hesitant to navigate the cones at GoodGuys, the Chevelle did great at Marina. Everyone was extremely supportive and offered help, advice, and even a bungee cord to keep her battery locked and loaded when the OEM clamp gave way. I'm sure we'll see Deanna and the 'Velle at future events and she's even talking about upgrading her suspension. Hotchkis ... prepare for a phone call and she can't wait to get those goodies on her car.

And here's a fun shot ...

Had a great weekend running the O.L.C. around the cones! Progress has been made but it's just amazing how much understeer we still had, and how much it takes to get the in car balance, -we are finally getting close.

I think the car did amazingly well compared to some real tough competition on better rubber and WAY less weight. No- we didn't beat the CP guys, but when you consider the tire differences, I think we did extremely well.
With the car getting easier to drive, James is doing much better with it, and he's closer to our times.
I have some video clips I'll upload and post.

Glad everything went well.. wish I was there to see it.

Also glad to hear that Jim's car is getting more and more sorted out. I still think his biggest detriment is the size of his front tires. Wider front rubber would really help the understeer situation.

Here's a bunch of photographs of the event. I shot most of them but handed the camera to Dave and another friend when we ran OLC and my car.

While many of the cars are not considered by us to be cool rides, there are quite a few cars that should interest you. As there's over 200 that made the cut, I've supplied the link to get to them.

FUN!

I see they flip-flopped the direction on Sunday. Did they change the course at all or was it the same but just opposite direction?

You were pretty smooth through that beginning bit that was the last few corners on Sat.

James OLC
07-08-2009, 08:30 AM
I'll try to post more video tonight (for some reason my Adobe editor kept adding a vid skip which threw the audio off) but anyways...

The direction on Sunday was opposite of Saturday but the course was essentially the same. I think that the only real change was that the point-to-point slalom at the begining (Saturdays end) was made a little bit less abrupt by moving the corners out about three feet. Other than that it was pretty much the same.

I downloaded some of the RacePak data Monday (there are 40 runs to go through and I've only seen a couple of them) but it's interesting to see - max speed was in the low 60's but max throttle was only 40%...

I think that the rear end might be contibuting to our push and I know that there is more to be had with some very minor changes. Mary had an epiphany on her second to last run and got things figured out. I would have given my eye teeth for some slicks.

Damn True
07-08-2009, 08:42 AM
The rear end?

As in the suspension settings/configuration, or as in the differential?

James OLC
07-08-2009, 08:50 AM
Maybe the differential - I think - but the jury is still out. It seems like the DPI is locking up really quickly and that may be making the car want to push rather than turn - especially on the 180°'s like the showcase. Like I said, the jury is still out on that one and I'm having a hard time coming up with an easy way to test the theory. The DPI is adjustable so maybe something can be done there but I don't know yet.

Damn True
07-08-2009, 08:57 AM
I'm guessing that by "adjustable" you mean that you'd have to pull the pumpkin in order to make the adjustment?

Seems plausible based on what you, Mary and David were saying about where it was pushing.

James OLC
07-08-2009, 09:14 AM
Yeah - it would have to come out and get sent back to DPI - PITA. I need to talk to them about what is involved and what the setup options are. Like I said, I don't know if it's an issue (or solution) or not but it's on the radar - like about a half dozen other things.

I was gonna ask how the race gas worked out for you James, when I got there you and Mary were trading seats and Dave was filming.

Did your motor like it...?:yum:

James OLC
07-08-2009, 10:40 AM
It always likes it... I think the problem we were having was a combination of crappy California pump gas and the fact that we were getting a little bit hot. We were hot lapping the car and, for the most part, didn't have time to shut the car off between runs. It was easier to let it idle while we changed drivers and checked tire pressure. It wasn't much warmer (maybe 200° in the afternoon) but it was enough to ping a bit in second at low rpm under load.

The 110 cleared that up no problem...

Results are up this morning. I was 8th in C Prepared on Saturday and 6th in Sunday. To put our changes in perspective, Satuday I was 6.36 seconds behind the best time in class, Sunday I was 4.07 behind. What they don't list are our fun run passes and (for some reason) David's (Mary's) runs on Sunday. Mary's best time on Sunday in the OLC was a 42.179 which put her ahead of Milt in Taz and just over 2 seconds behind the class leader.

Not bad for a car that was 500 pounds heavier than most of the of the class and on street tires vs. slicks...

That's great. Considering you have a streetable car, and the level of competition was extreme in the CP class. I'd call that a win for both car and driver.
