View Full Version : Pontiac Frustration

I have been looking for a restored Pontiac (68-70 GTO, 67-69 Firebird-prefer 'vert or 70-73 TA or Formula) for over a year.
Biggest priority is I want a restored car No clones--numbers matching unimportant--Want a mint show car body and car so I can then add my own PT touches (have bult motor, tranny suspension all new awaiting the right car).
Prefer a Manual tranny but not critical.
Have looked at so much overpriced and misrepresented junk. So frustrated I am even considering to sell my stroker motor and PT parts at discount and give up :(
Open to done PT cars but I am picky on the quality of cars and mods. I have some real nice cars so IMO I need to at least equal the quality of these cars. Willing to buy now at very fair market prices.
Hoping somebody can lead me in the right direction understanding it is a heck of a lot easier to buy a Camaro than a Pontiac.
Thanks in advance,
Brad

I would imagine you have already checked out the "For Sale" section of Performace Years forum?
Lots of nice cars (in various states of condition) including a nice done 68 Firebird convertible for $23K.
Just trying to help

Yes I posted it for sale-hoping it would either sell so I can pursue non-Pontiac dreams (not really what I want to do) or help me find the "right car".
Brad
PS I need to start the craigs list search, just don't want a project

Hmmm, Pontiac dreams:banghead:, never give up on your dreams..... It becomes to easy to do the next time things get a little tough. Best of luck to you.

Having been down this road many times, with many misrepresented cars along the way, if you want it done right you're going to have to build it yourself.
I know you're pain. I purchased my 1969 Firebird in April of 99 as what I thought was a solid, complete car.
That was for all intensive purposes "mostly" true. However an unfortunate wheel bearing failure on the drive home after delivery of the car got me looking a little harder. That when I discovered damage that had been corrected poorly (lots of filler) a bit of rot in all the typical places, and a hodge podge of odds and ends parts that had been thrown at the car over it's then 30 year life span.
Fast forward and the old hag is now 10 years older, but she looks like this...

I wouldn't give up your dream just yet.
Heck, as it sits now, my car is exactly what you're looking for. All the bodywork has been completed and it's painted up. All that's left is to piece together the goodies.
I've contemplated selling, but I'm not sure that's what I want to do.
Anyway, keep looking. I think you'll find you'll have to do some work, but the cars are out there. You'll find something!

There are alot less Pontiacs out there than chevies to begin with. Add the fact that they're a little tougher to build because parts are not quite as plentiful and can be more expensive. You've got some pretty high expectations. Honestly, you just might have to build it yourself.
I do happen to know where there is a nice (but not show quality) very very solid 2nd gen firebird that the owner wants to sell. I think it would be a prime candidate for what you want to do, but you'd probably need to factor in paint (but I really don't think any real body work).

there is a guy outside of town that has a buttload of old Goats- as in, over a hundred when i was out there a few years ago.. most are complete, but none are "show quality".
he won't sell parts, but he will sell complete cars.

Brad you are looking for the years that are most difficult to find in decent shape any more. Either they are rust buckets or ridiculolously priced as you are finding. If you decide to expand your search to the late '70's Firebirds, you will have better luck and a good foundation for a PT cruiser. Rick

Thanks guys, appreciate all advice and leads.
Scott-love the 67 Firebird but way too pricey. Can't wait to see your finished car--Bear Mtn run soon ? Get some guys together and let's make it happen.
Two Formulas-you are so right, even being a product of early 80's cars I just can't do it. I am sure something will pop.
Again big problem is I already have some VERy sweet rides so it makes it a bit harder.
Lenie-that has been my favorite 1st Gen for a long time-keep it moving.
