I'm not sure if this is the best spot for this question so if it's not feel free to move it. I want to upgrade the steering on my 1968 firebird but need to keep it on a budget. After doing some research it sounds like using the steering box out of a 1992 camaro (cardone 276550#) is my best option. I can get the steering boxes from my parttime job at cost. I know I will need a new pitman arm (moog K6582) along with some adapters for the pump along with a new rag joint. I need to replace all of the above items because they are all pretty wore out. If anyone has a better suggestion please let me know. Thanks in advance.
Using a 3rd gen box is a great upgrade. Note that there are different boxes in the sense of turning radius. Typically the boxes that came on 3rd gens with 16" wheels had stops installed in the box to limit travel.
This was to prevent the tires from rubbing on the frame. The boxes have a two letter code such as HX or JY to ID them. The HX box was used on 3rd gens with 16" wheels. While the JY box with 15" wheels.
I'd definitely do some searches here and on the 'net for additional information on which would be the best box for your set up.

The "HX" box I have in my '72 Camaro came out of my '92 RS with 16" wheels. Excellent box as stock units go.
Spline count & shaft dia. on input are different than early units, but easily adapted at rag-joint. Fittings are metric o-ring, but inserts are available to adapt to older flare type. Otherwise, bolts right in.
