I'm beat, but it was worth it!
Seriously, technically I was working but it's hard to consider beating on my car and hanging out with out car nuts "work".
Everything went great, the ship out there went good and Lane Automotive really helped me by taking care of my car (although the rope stantions were a bit much.. lol)
They also put on a hell of an event. We dodged a monsoon and the weather on Saturday and Sunday was perfect.
Road Track: Went well, poor Penny was really punished since I would take her out and then bring her in so David could beat on her for a while. My driving was good but my line sucked, I need some schooling. We discovered that our Bilstiens, that were valved for how the car was at Optima, are no longer 'right' for the car and we had some skittering (needs more rebound). So, adjustable shocks just went on the menu. Also, the BP20 pads that are great on the street and the autocross got cooked on the track after running so many sessions.
Autocross: She did great, couldn't ask for anymore. The brakes were still sluggish but that just meant you needed to punch them harder. Steering was great and the car felt very smooth and settled.
The top five times (with the out of spec cars removed)
These are from my notes.. don't consider them official.
David Pozzi - bad penny - 29.367
Kyle Tucker - DSE Second Gen - 29.387
Ryan Mathews - DSE First Gen - 30.663
Steven Rupp - bad penny - 30.698
Jake Parrot - 69 Camaro - 30.776
What a blast! It was really great seeing everyone and I enjoyed the change of sceanery. Except the bad weather!
Great event, great people and great cars.. who could ask for more?
Thanks to Lane Automotive for making this happen and to all the sponsors that stepped up.
Look for full event coverage in a future issue of CAMARO PERFORMERS Magazine!!

You'll have a long wait for PHR... they don't seem interested in these events (this, RTTH) since I left. Go figure.
We will have full coverage though.
I will get more pics up when I get some time.

I have to say Steve, the more your behind the wheel, your becoming a really good autocross driver. Those tips from Dave and Mari Possi are really paying off. Tell Nick to take more pictures so you can drive more. Oops, that's your day job, maybe not....lol

I couldn't resist.
Hey, we got some great in-car video.. in one you're chasing the DSE second gen.
Much more interesting when there's another car in the frame.
Look at the Racepak data yet?
Using my iPod accelerometer download we did (at the autocross) peak g numbers of 1.24 left / 1.23 right / 1.18 acceleration & 1.07 deceleration

Hey Steve,
What exactly is considered "out of spec cars" now???
I thought in past P-T.com events (like RTTH, etc) you had to compete with tires with a UTQG rating of 180 or higher to be "in-spec" and eligible for the accolades...
So, has someone lowered that number to include R888 (100-rating) as being "in-spec" now?
The reason I ask is I want to buy tires for my Bug that will make it eligible for these events but at the same time buy as sticky tires as I can and get as MUCH traction from my tires as possible...
By the way, VERY NICE pictures!!! It looks like you guys had a blast!!

The rules vary from event to event.. in this one you were allowed 100 or higher treadwear.. which is good since that's what I run as my street tires.
out of spec cars had race tires (40 treadwear).. like the Corvette that was there. Also, I don't think they counted the WRX STi since it's AWD and has ABS...
180 treadwear will serve you well at most events like Goodguys and such.

Hey Steve,
Thanks for the info... Since the rules seem to jump around from event to event it looks like I'm going to end up with a few sets of wheels and tires for my car... :)
With my power-to-weight ratio I will need all the traction help I can get... I was planning on using R888's for my street tires as well... I ended up with R6's with hand grooves... Although the R888's are a "R" compound tire they are just a little harder than the 40-rating tires... They are BOTH considered "Competition" tires... I have searched on ebay and racingjunk.com and I have located good used sets of R888's and Michelin PS2's... I will be ready for any event with any rules... I now have a set of R888's, a set of PS2's, two sets of R6's, and a set of A6's...

The Yellow Camaro is owned by Charley Lillard.
Either driven by Charley or Mark Stielow.
It's powered by an LS9 / ZR1 engine.
The car is called " Jackass ".

Most events follow the 180 TW Goodguys rule. This particular event has a bona-fide road course shootout race--not just parking lot autocross. So the rating was dropped to 100 TW in the interest of safety for this particular event. In the end, the fastest road course car ran 300 TW BFG KDW's and the 2nd fastest road course car ran 220 TW Michelin PS2's. So there's no reason why those tires can't be competitive. And Kyle Tucker was one of two eligible cars to click off a sub 30 second run in the autocross. He did that on 300 TW BFG KDW's.
Car setup and driver experience prevail over tread wear rating every time. Tread wear rating is somewhat arbitrary any way. There is no federal mandate. Each tire manufacturer develops their own rating.
At the Motor State Challenge, 100 tread wear tires helped some less experienced drivers to safely push their cars harder. Keep in mind also that if you bring 100 TW tires to a 180 TW event, they won't send you home, you just won't be eligible for a trophy.

Hey Steve,
Thanks for the clarifications... I understand the tire UTQG ratings are just a relative "ballpark" number that leaves room for Tire Company assumptions, opinions, and extrapolations... The government does set standards that all the companies are supposed to follow but they admit there is room for interpretation...
I totally agree with your statement that, "Car setup and driver experience prevail over tread wear rating every time"... but, realizing, and admitting, my own inexperience justifies my personal desire to get as MUCH help as I can from my car's setup and my tire's performance...
Therefore, I would always want to lean towards the highest performing tire the particular event's rules would allow to boost my obvious lack of seat time and probable inadequate skill level...

That's Robert McGaffin... he's a freelancer so he works for many magazines. He's also one of our best feature shooters.
He shot the Jackass Camaro for Camaro Performers Magazine and helped with event coverage. :)
