Neil; Thanks for your service!
I recently got out of a 25 year profession operating a retail store and moved south so I could play with cars all year long. I started a new company based on a project I've been working on for several years. www.RadCapz.com (http://www.RadCapz.com) is a company that makes center caps for wheels. The first line of caps available were designed to fit ARE Torque Thrust II wheels and other wheels that use the same center cap.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/06/dilbert200711195248-1.jpg
My role in systems is a lot of hurry up & wait and conference calls, thus occasional free time to wander forums.
Before that I managed a Michelin dealer for 7 years. I am getting rather bored with corporate life, so if anyone needs an organized MBA educated business type with service, people & project management experience, let me know. :naughty:

I'm a Fire Alarm/Fire Suppression Technician for a fairly large company here in Southern California.
Basically... I get paid to go around all your jobs and make sure your office buildings, warehouses and data centers with suppression systems function properly so that when the Fire Dept. does show up, they've got less work to do.
One of those... behind the scenes dudes.
I'm not a fan of my job, the pay is too little for the amount of responsibility that's laid on us. The job itself isn't that bad, it's the potential for screw ups that's bad. If we screw up a system disarm, or an installer put in a hidden relay and didn't label the panel and we go test something. We could evacuate a high-rise building or dump a suppression system... or worst yet shut down a Server room.
And all eyes, fingers and swear words are directed at you in a nano-second when that crap happens.
Currently looking elsewhere... but in this day and age... I'm lucky to be employed... so here I stay for now.

I've worked primarily in application systems development, with some systems and network administration over the years.
I've held all positions from programmer, analyst, database administrator, manager, to director.
I've also done a good deal of IT consulting over the years, and have been published 3 times.
Currently, I work for a commercial software company that supplies software and services that run utility companies in the USA and Canada.
Recently, I've been writing the programs to upgrade our customer databases from older versions of our system to the latest version. I also do a fair amount of developer training.
I'm lucky enough to telecommute 100%, and I absolutely love it!

Worked my ass off there 60+ hrs a week.Trust me when I say I am much happier now not working for them. They have reduced the work force there by half almost 600 and there has never been a word about how many people have lost there jobs there, they are so sneaky they do it 20-40 at a time over the course of months. I've been working in the mining industry for about the past fifteen years. Mostly gold mining, open pits, and undergrounds. I don't go underground tho, I let the wife go there. She works at the mines also.
In the past week I've actually been learning the refinery process. Pouring 1000 troy oz bars. Kinda cool. One place I was at it was not uncommon to have 6-10 1300 oz buckets of gold concentrate in the back of a pick-up taking it to the refinery for processing. With security following closely!
Was at a Zinc mine but it closed the doors when the economy took a dive and the auto industry slacked off.

Well by reading everyones careers, I guess I am the biggest SLACKER on here. I am 38 years old and still thinking about what I want to do.. Ha Ha I have a few idea's I am working on, and seeing where they go. I may have the next Go Daddy revenue caliber website coming out shortly, and just signed Classic Industries for my Flush Mount Glass Products. The new Camaro Catalog comes out next month and I have the Inside Cover for the new issue. They are also taking my other lines for their other new issues.
I quit my job about a year and a half ago to allow myself to test some opportunities, and have had a blast since.. I deal in Classic and interesting cars on the side to keep busy.. Basically I am a Bum right now, and loving it.

I'm the head of the paint & coatings shop for a machine/fab shop. We mainly specialize in aerospace & government work, but do alot of other stuff as well. We make & build alot of cockpit trainers as well as the actual plane parts. The best part about my job is that I have access to just about any kind of CNC or sheetmetal machine you can think of, as well as my paint shop, and the owner is ok with me using them during off time for projects as long as it's my own material.
Here's a JSF trainer we make, almost everything was made in house & painted by yours truly:

Me, well after spending 28 years sitting on my ass watching cars and trucks build themselves in GM's Oshawa plants I have taken one of the "exit" packages offered to me. Never pass up an opportunity to put the screws to the Company. Now I do the same thing at home, but it's just not as satisfying.

Composer, researcher, educator, musician, artist. Oh, but wait, the question was...
What do you do for a living?
In that case, not a damn thing right now... I'm unemployed, doing the stay-at-home dad thing, and generally being a poor contributor to society and the economy. I suppose that's what I get for being obscenely over-educated in fields that no one really cares about (or cares enough about to pay for). But my dream is that I can completely sell out for a lot of money, like maybe $10-$12 per hour + benefits. :banghead:

I'm the boss out here on this highway, so watch out when your driving my way. I'm workin for the state, I'm the highway patrol. (song by Junior Brown). Anyway, been doing it for 15 years. Spent 11 on SWAT, now run a drug interdiction unit.

I' am a IT Director/Lead Programmer for www.Blankshirts.com (http://www.Blankshirts.com), one of the largest wjolesale apparel distributors on the internet. so most of the day I spend building apps (internal and web) to sell and promote our product lines, or day dream about cars and surf this site......
Wow small world, you guys were one of the first vendors I used when I opened up my business in '08.
Might as well add to this thread while I'm here - I own a promotional products company in NY. Here (http://www.kushworks.com) is our central website. We sell custom printed apparel and niche merchandise items locally and via various satellite websites, like custom license plate frames (http://www.plateframesonline.com), custom decals (http://www.decaldiy.com), etc. to businesses and organizations nation-wide. It's a fun job. Stressful, but fun.

Not exactly the most exciting job but has it's own rewards for those of us who work in it. I along with others in my office take care of the families for soldier's who are killed/die or are injured and their families reside in North Carolina. We also insure that notification are made to the next ok kin when a soldier is injured. In addition, we handle all of the funerals for Active Duty soldiers, retirees and veterans whose funeral will be held within the state of North Carolina.

As much as possible. I am fairly out of pro rule training as I deal with a lot of hacking=street ball. But I LOVE the game. Knee injury @ 17 kept me out of NCAA (would have played for UCLA with the O'Bannon Brothers).

And a update, we are currently in first at the moment, heading into the final stages of our season. Hopefully we win, and get homecourt advantage during the playoffs. Its quite helpful

As a self-employed contractor, here's only a few things that I currently enjoy as my "work" sources:
Global Manufacturers' Representative; my role is to help others with ideas/inventions/products, to match them with my resource companies, from 3D CAD design, to prototyping & mass production, using unlimited materials & manufacturing processes, that range from everyday household products, to advanced Medical Supplies, and even National Defense vehicle (aviation/nautical/automotive) & weapons/accessories, some of which include:
- CNC machining of metals/Waterjet & Laser cutting/DieCasting/Tool & Die Manufacturing/Cold Steel Stamping/among many others
- Plastic Injection Molding
- Electronics/PCB design & assembly
- Adhesives/Paints/Chemicals
- Vinyl Graphics
only to name a FEW!
Clients include (directly & indirectly, as many of our suppliers make products & accessories that compliment others' products, besides only making specific parts for these companies):
3M; Honeywell; General Dynamics; Browning Firearms; John Deere; General Motors; Ford; etc.
As I notice there are many Engineers and machinists here, I can't help but wonder if somehow we are already doing business, either supplying you with our products, or if your companies already outsource to our manufacturers, as we have access to & contracts with.
If not, then we should be working together, eventually.
I'm also an independent contractor/delivery driver, with airlines for freight/cargo/luggage/films for theaters/medical supplies for hospitals & labs/etc.!
And, an independent Financial Advisor, to teach others how to reduce/eliminate debts, and how to save & invest money that's already available to them!
And, a Manufacturer's Representative for a company that resurrected my great uncle's electric razor (not rotary, but twin blades) invention, and is quickly becoming recognized in the health & beauty industry. Developed with the help of a NASA engineer, it is the only razor proven to eliminate razor bumps on African-American's sensitive skin!
Always looking to add more opportunity & experience to my resume...

After 25 years in IT as a Network Specialist I got fed up with the industry and retired. I am currently the parts manager for the local John Deere dealership.
