I have been working on putting this project togther for quite a while. Travis (Red Rocker) from Muscle Car Power and I talked about doing a build series article on how "Fabricators" Like us might build a Pretty "Bolt togther" camaro. And what parts we would combine to make a very well balanced and capable street car and track car. Would we build it just to Autocross or actually haul ass on the track, would we just say it works or would we put it to the test. Would we just show the parts in the picture and say they work great because we got them for "FREE". Or would we work and show all the advantages for the parts choices we made.
So on to the parts selection for today. I decided to use the Chassisworks suspension parts system for the Camaro. For a few reasons, Nobody seems to have any solid numbers, but I think the Chassisworks might be lightest front clip on the market. (camaros have a lot of weight on the front). Plus I felt it would give me the most aggresive ride height. Liked some of the trick features in the front end. like on the fly camaber/caster adjustments, no shims. Plus I think I can fit a 295/17 or 18 on the front. I will work to show you guys the reasons I choose the parts I choose here and in the magazine.
So on to the the build, 1967 Camaro.

FAST EFI system -Tuning ability and will plug directly into racepak.
Anvil Auto Carbon parts to get more weight off the nose, and make it cool.
BFG Tires 295/35/18 and 335/30/18's KDW's and R1's
Wheels will be a "ONE OFF" design between Ironworks and Shaun @ EVOD wheels.
Clayton Machineworks has some really bitchin Pedals come out and We are on the list for those. They will be start shipping in July.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
We will be running Wilwood 13" brakes front and rear. With a Wilwood master cylinder.
Marquez Design will be showing off alot of new products to add to their highly sought after product line.
Ring Brother Hinges and Hood pins should help finish out the front Billet accesories quite well.
Of course with out the helpful guidance of our own Carter Hickman. Who is Currently hammering out another Camaro rendering for this project.

I will keep you guys updated as the parts arrive and my credit cards help stimulate the Economy. Tommorrow she hits the scales to get a base line.

Here are some of the selling points that made me go with the Chassisworks Front Subframe.
I really like the fact I can change camber / caster adjustments with out a having a floor jack. And if you spent some time at your local alignment shop, you could count the revolutions between your street set up and your track set up.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I also like the fact I could clock the rack and pinion to optimise header clearance with the steering shaft and also improve U joint angles if needed to smooth out the steering.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
For a track car I like the bumpsteer adjusters, The front suspension is all computer designed and laid out for the best bumpsteer but this would let you tune for your desired specs.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
The front sway bar on the Chassisworks front subframe has 2 options, 1.25" or 1.285" We choose the 1.285" bar. I liked the fact the sway bar would not have issues with the oil pan.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Alot of these design advantages are due to the fact of a clean sheet design. Nothing is based around already existing parts. Everything is designed from a clean slate.
Here is a picture of the bed of my F-450 full to the brim with Chassisworks Products last Saturday.

Is it just me, or is that a rather large bump steer spacer? It just seems like that much vertical separation between your rack end and steering arm would cause deflection in the steering. One would think that since it was a clean slate build they would either raise the rack or lower the steering arm.

Maybe it's much smaller than the picture makes it out to be?

I just installed all the shims in the kit as not to loose them. They have not been anything more the just put in there. If you noticed the nuts are not even tight yet so that makes the shaft look that much longer.

Ok, I figured their had to be a reason. I totally missed the nut being loose the first time. Thanks for clearing that up.

Today we removed the old sub and installed the new Chassisworks Street machine front clip. We got some weights of the old and the new. The old subframe we pulled out is manual steering and the sway bar is so small it looks like a coat hanger.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
It weighs 261 lbs.
The Chassisworks front clip comes with power steering, a big 1 5/16" sway bar and much bigger spindles with Chassisworks bigger bearing front hubs, weighs 230 lbs. I'm trying to get the weight of a stock clip with a bigger sway bar and power steering box, I bet it is another 10-15lbs.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

So the stock 1967 camaro you see pictured weighs 1728lbs, in it's semi stripped down state, no windshield, but all other glass intact, most mechanical parts (Brake master, fuel and brake lines, Ebrake cables, etc)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
By just removing the front fenders, core support and hood we lost 117 lbs. CRAZY :wow: I would have never guess that stuff weighed so much.
HELLO CAN I SPEAK TO TYLER AT ANVIL.... PLEASE
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
And finally with the Chassiworks front clip installed and the front sheetmetal back on just like it was in the beginning, we have a total weight of 1646 lbs. So we lost 82 with this just the install of the front subframe. and it lowered the car proababley 2". The ride sticks that come with the Chassisworks clip set the car at exact ride height. You can see the stance is coming togther on the front quite well. Now we need to do something about the rear.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
And with the front sheetmetal back in place

Day 3. The stock sub with Drum brakes and these roller wheels and tires weighs 372lbs.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Since the brake are not here yet, Once we put front brakes on the car, what will it bring the weight in the front back up to?
Which is lighter stock drum brakes or Big 13 brakes from Wilwood?

The Chassisworks subframe contributed to a 31 lbs loss, but how much weight will we put back on when the 13" Wilwood 6 piston brakes arrive?

I was shocked by this number also.

Is the bushing spherical? As you screw the adjsuters in and out to adjust caster, it would appear to me the bushing will bind unless there's a spherical element to it.

I'm debating how to do the windows, I want to do lexan, but the Optima Rules say the windows have to be "Operational". If we ran the roll up glass, I wonder what weighs more, the 67 vent window or the 68 full side glass.

I also think we will resheet the firewall to go to one panel of steel. We will also sink the Dry sump tank into the firewall to put more weigh behind the axle center line. We cut out the cowl vents duct work t loose some weigh. We also cut out the stock dash to build an aluminum unit.

We are down to 1535 lbs.

I'm waiting in the BFG tires to start fitting the 295/35/18 tires on the front. It looks like it will be tight but possible with full steering.

Could you explain how there was a 31 lb difference in the subframe weights, but when you weighted the car with the 2 subframes there was an 82 lb difference. Seems like it should have been the same lose both ways.

I talked with Carter Hickman a few times about some ideas on this project and he was excited to work with me on some different body mods and looks that we were going for on the car.

Here is a brief run down on the list of mods. We will be running Lexan windows like a prostock drag car. Flush mounted and bolt in with tiny flush allens. We will also be working with Anvil Auto on getting every Carbon fiber piece possible. Flat Hood, cowl panel no vents, hood vents, trunk lid and spoiler. I'm have heard rumors of a front valance and possibly doors. Marquez Design will be handling all the trick billet parts. Ring Brothers is setting us up with a set of some trick hood hinges and some hood pins.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The Wheels are a one off design the Eric turner whipped up in a bout 7 minutes flat. We will be working with EVOD wheels to do our own design.

The BFG R1 Slicks started arriving today and they are almost as tall as me piled up. THAT'S TALL. The slicks measure 285/30/18 and 335/30/18.
The BFG KDW 2's should start arriving soon. Those will me 295/35/18 and 335/30/18.

I love it, great build. I have this front sub, but how in the world are you going to fit the 295 / 35's up front? I have 275 / 40 17's up front and rub the frame, even my 245 / 45 18's rub at full lock. ( back space on the 18's is not optimal )

P.S. Thanks for all the weights.

Yeah but where are the VENT WINDOWS???

Sorry James, she is a 67 but vent windows are too heavy. Unless we figure out a way to maintain the theme and put a vent window. That would make the window more stable. I'm trying to make the car as light as possible with out having to go on a diet.

Rodger

preston
06-18-2009, 11:39 AM
So you gave up on operational windows ?

I've been intrigued with the idea of buying the pre-formed side windows available from Percy's or Shields and somehow adapting them to stock rollup hardware. I have no idea how this works on a Camaro, my car is a '67 Mustang, but it seems possible. It will mess up the ability to get a good strong window seal due to the flex I imagine, but certainly a possibility.

The vent window on a Mustang is very heavy as well, but it includes the entire front glass channel, so I haven't figured out a way to rebuild it from aluminum as I don't have a pullmax obviously, or anyway to recreate the receiver groove for the window channel felt (I still consider mine a street car).

I like your analytical approach to this build. For those of us who religously weigh everything on the car, its annoying when people throw out weights as in "I"m gonna save 50 lbs by doing this" when we all know its not that easy.

Will this car have hvac ?

ironworks
06-18-2009, 12:07 PM
In the end it is just a rendering and I love the look of the bolt in lexan windows. I have been talking about this idea for months. I have to make the side windows operational for the Optima Shootout. So they need to work in some form of fashion. But man Carter sure made them look good. Now I just have to make it look like that unless I was going for the full on race car looks.

We plan to put a Vintage Air unit in the car and show exactly how much weight that would add to the car. I bet not much, but living in Bakersfield would make it worth while...... MAYBE

Well here are some update pics. I got the body lightly blasted last week except for the quarters we are going to replace, the bent up tail panel and rusted out trunk floor. We decided to do the full quarter since there are some small rust spots up top to deal with at the same time. We got a complete trunk floor and quarters from Classiic Industries, they usually have a nice 20%off sale you can get a deal on. There will be plenty of updates between now and the end of August. We plan to display the car as a mocked up roller in the Chassisworks booth at the West Coast nationals. Now that Columbus is wrapped up and we are back hauling ass in the shop, we have few cars to get done before we prep the C6-57 for it hopeful booth spot at SEMA.
I need to install the LS7 engine which will happen Saturday with the front sheetmetal and aluminum core support and all the Anvil goodies. We also just got our Ring Bro hinges and hood pins. Once I get the Adapter parts from Chassisworks for the 14" rotors from the 13"s we had planned to run I can install those. I just ordered the axles and rear diff to get those installed in the car. I talked with Hector from Rick's tanks yeaterday and should see a tank in a few weeks. We need to install the Chassisworks rollcage into the car next week and then begin to build the dash to fit the Speedwire switch box unit with the ISIS power system and the Racepak unit with the EFI control unit. We are trying decide if we will install the Kinsler Cross ram unit or if we will run a fully adjustable unit or a factor ECU based system, either way most systems will plug right into the Racepak.

Well I told you we would have some Big updates this week.
I finally got all the Carbon Fiber parts from Anvil Auto ( www.anvilauto.com ).
MAN all I can say it they are beautiful. Tyler Delivered the big parts to me at the LA Roadster show, When we opened the box all the wives and Girlfriends were hanging out and not a one of them understand what Carbon fiber is or does, But they all said in at the same time , "UUUUHHHH PRETTY". My thought has always been when you build something and show it to some one who has no clue what they are looking at and they think it is apealing to the eye, your doing something right.
Well check out these master pieces of carbon fiber from Anvil Auto. I wonder if Anvil could combine my Two favorite things, Carbon Fiber and BOOBS?

Could you do me a huge favor? I'm building a Dodge Challenger and I'd love to use the Chassisworks rear suspension you're using in this build but of course they don't make this particular new set up for mopars. Could you measure inside frame rail to frame rail at the shock crossmember and the front where the upper arms mount? I'm thinking I may be able to modify/fab this to fit. The frame rails at the front of the bracket (Front of car) are 34" ID
These brackets are about as far out as they can go.

The frame tapers out to 39" at the back the bracket. You could narrow the rear taper about 2" per side if needed with out affecting the upper shock brackets.

The ID of the front lower inls is about 37 1/8" ID. There are offset spacers on the lower links that would allow you to move this around.

The length of the lower links are adjustable and set to about 24"s at this time.

There looks like there are some provisions to move a few things areound to fit in other cars.

Good luck

Eric (HWY NOVA) and I have been working on some wheel designs for his convertible and we came up with a few designs we are looking to possibly market. They will have a Monoblock design and will be able to have design elements of a Monoblock but be little more affordable. They will be expensive but look at the possible details in this design. I guess it is time for the monday morning update.
The Rear quarters, floor and outer wheel tubs from Classic Industries are all landed and tacked in the car. We decided to make our own package tray and the section from the package tray to the rear winodow channel. Our Custom build 35 spline axles from Strange Engineering arrived, We are waiting on our "NEW" 35 spline truetrac to be avaliable to get the built to order center section from Strange Engineering some time next month. The 14" Wilwood brakes have arrived and we installed them for mockup both front and rear. The anodized black Ring Brother hinges have been installed, They work so smooth. We have a set of Ring Brother hood pins, but cannot install them until we get the front sheetmetal fit perfectly. Those beautiful Anvil Auto carbon parts are hard to repair if you damage them, so measure twice cut once.
We had a small problem with getting to run the Silver State Classic next month. The rollcage we had choosen from Chassisworks was an 1.625 cage. We choose that to save weight and in any of the sanctioning bodies we would have ran, they would not have required anything more. Well as soon as we are going to run the Silver State faster then 125, they required a 1.75" x .120 DOM cage. We cannot run that fast our first year, but I hate having to go back and change stuff. Chassisworks said they would get us a 1.75" cage but they were out of stock and it would be 2 weeks. Well when you have 7 weeks to get the car running 2 weeks is alot of time to be set back. So I decided we would pass on the Silver State this year and just focus on being ready for the Optima Street Car Shootout in November. Well Enjoy the pics and lets see how much we get done this week. 10 days till she has to be in Pleasanton in the Chassisworks booth.

Well our Speedtech switch panel finally cleared customs and arrived this morning. From my Days of Drag racing I remembered a company from Canada that made a really nice switch panel, that was set up with some self diagnosis features that could come in handy on the side of the road or the track. The switch panel connects through a Axial cable like your computer uses. All you do is hook up the power source to the relay panel and route your power wires to the components your running.

Time for another update. Things are going pretty smooth. We have 90% of the rollcage welded in place. Most all the parts are under the hood. We have the ATS hydraulics for the clutch on th firewall and Got the Vintage Air LS7 Engine Bracket system Anodized in black installed. We have the Willwood black master cylinder mounted on the firewall. We are going to run manual brakes no booster or hydroboost. We have the Air intake plumbing set up with a K&N air filter. We have alot of the Plumbing done in front of the core support. We got the firewall support bars located and welded to eveything but the male side that welds to the chassis. We got the Drive by Wire Throtle pedal mounted up under the dash. We are going to try and get the Clayton Machine Works gas pedal pad on the elctronic gas pedal. The Drive by wire throttle body has not shown up from Gm yet.
The Vintage air bracket system went on without a single hitch. It is very solidly constructed and seems like a pretty nice piece. We will be installing the Gen 4 unit later this afternoon. We are also working to lay out the window flanges in Solidworks to laser cut the steel flange and water jet cut the lexan windows.

So I borrowed the scales again yesterday. Most all the parts are on the car, We lack, fluids, plumbing, and lexan windows, exhaust, mufflers, driveshaft, light weight floor insulation, wiring and and few other
small items. We also do not have the actual wheels and tires on the car
For not making any adjustments to the coilovers to move weight around it is coming out nicely. Our goal of under 3000 lbs without 260lb driver should be pretty easily done. Maybe 3100lbs with driver??????

Amazing how fast a shop can move. Very clean execution although I prefer the full fab cars myself of course.

Is that a pretty standard way of attaching lexan ? I've seen several different approaches. Focusing on the back window, I assume that frame is mounted ~1/8" below the surface so the lexan is flush with the sheet metal ? Do you just get a nice tight fit and weld to whatever metal its touching ? How do you compensate for the weld bead without creating a gap between the window and the panel ? (bevel the lexan on the bottom surface ? grind the weld down ? Never easy on an inside corner). Will you use plastic fasteners or SS screws and will there be silcone in there ?

Being able to spec out those laser cut panels is awesome, I should get the tools and find a vendor to do that, beats the crap out of a sawzall and grinder LOL.

I believe the cut window panels are for mock up only for the shape of the lexan, but I could be wrong.

Well 4 weeks ago I had the gran idea that I would lay out the pattern in Solidworks and it would fit like a glove. Well Quickly found out after 75 bucks in full side print outs that making a precision piece fit a not precison part like a camaro body, you have to throw the tape measure away. So I cut it just tic big, with the bolt flange and then sanded it to fit the opening. I pan to weld the famge from behind and the side windows flanges will bolt in and out from behindI have thought about doing the same in the front and rear with pan head bolts so the lexan would set on top. But now that we have the flange fit very tightly I have a stout pattern to clamp the lexan to and then drill all the holes and use the steel as a pattern. I was hoping at one time laser cut the flange and it would fit perfect and then water jet the lexan. But I can not fill the factor imperfections with the welder.

We laser cut panels and pieces all the time, Check out Daves Camaro in this project section and you will see how high my laser cutting bill has been. If we tried to make these parts by hand it would cost 10 times more. I can cut all the complicated parts for a project for the price it would take to make some of the the large complicated with all the labor involved. I got some more parts last night.

I will post them in Daves thread later today.

Thanks Guys

Well we got the car back from the blaster and painter. I had the entire body epoxy primered gray for now. I had the bottom and the firewall painted Dove gray. I have always liked the Nascar look. The car is not detailed to the moon, just business. I don't want it to be too nice, we want to drive it without reservation. We used the super lightweight Dynamat Insulation and set up some aluminum floor pans to help with the heat and give it a cool look. We have started on the Engine wiring harness and milspec connectors. At this point it looks like we will put a cheap paint job on the car to paint the door jambs and roof, and will vinyl wrap the exterior. We found out to run in the suspension shoot out next month they want roll up windows and some kind of interior. We have quite a bit more to go but we are getting there.
