I have a guy who has a solid 1956 Chevrolet Belair with new crate 350, turbo 350 trans, Ford 9 inch, full air ride system, CPP upper and lowers, nice interior basically the same condition as my Camaro. He wants to trade and I am considering. I figured if nothing else if for some reason I do not like the 56 I could sell it and buy another Camaro, tell me what you think!!

Just from what I can see in the pictures, Yes I would trade. The 56 looks real nice.

06-08-2009, 02:19 PM
That's a tough one.

I'd want to have both... haha.

If you both like each others rides, why not just borrow each others cars whenever? And if the deal goes sour, you keep yours, he keeps his.

Like every other week, you guys trade off the cars. Bam, everybody is happy.

Bigblue73
06-08-2009, 02:29 PM
Both are timeless. I would consider what YOU would want to do to make it your own. Sorry but trading cars for the sake of the trade isn't going to cut it, you will want to change something. If you are looking for something different, you can't beat the '56. It's the right colors and would be an easy sell if you grew tired of it. I say trade, enjoy the view!

Which do you like driving more?

crazyfireman
06-08-2009, 03:17 PM
The 56 is more streetable, the guy lives 7 hours away so the borrowing deal couldnt work! I am leaning toward the trade, I appreciate everyones comments it really helps one think it through a little better.

If I could only have one, I would probably keep the Camaro, but they both look like sweet rides.

06-08-2009, 04:00 PM
Oh man, I'll admit I have some bias here, but I would take the Camaro over the 56 in a heartbeat. Both are gorgeous cars, but your Camaro is incredible. You said the Belair is more streetable, so I guess it just boils down to what you're looking to get out of the car. The best thing here though, is that either way, you can't go wrong.

MrQuick
06-08-2009, 04:33 PM
I'd do it. You can always buy and build another Camaro.

Hard to tell how the market is for tri 5's. How's you local economy?

crazyfireman
06-08-2009, 05:08 PM
Here in Florida, muscle cars and classics are better than real estate for investments. I am not really worried about the value too awfully much, I think the 56 is worth a little more.

hi when you built your car you probable kept a record of what you did to show the quality of workmanship did you ask him if he did the same. did a quality paint shop do the body work did he do it himself. you know your car.his car is probable as good [my preference is the camaro]. you know part of the fun of these car's is building one your self you know all the history every bolt in your car. if it was me id get both!!. id look for a 56 body that need help and slowly build it and drive the camaro in the meantime and if you get tired of the build you could always sell it and get your investment back. all win no lose. I know the cost to build a car is up there but you'll still have the camaro so what if the build take 4 years instead of 2 .and when your done you'd have 2 beautifully cars worth a lot of money and not just 1.

Keep the Camaro.

That '56 2-door sedan is a mid-line 210 model, not a top-line Bel Air. Easy to tell by the side trim and lack of stainless trim around the windows. Plus it would say 'Bel Air' instead of 'Chevrolet' on the rear quarters.

They came in 3 different trim levels, the 150 is the Plain-Jane low-line model.

once you start changing things around and upgrading the driveline and suspension, it really stops mattering what the car started out as.

rat_rod_russell
06-08-2009, 11:42 PM
And the 150's are harder to find these days since no one really keep them "that's just a 150". Belair's are gaudy in my opinion. Mine was a 150 and where building my dad a Belair.

dose that car belong to a guy named Ron?

Gearhead Dude
06-09-2009, 05:38 AM
I like them both and recently sold a '54. What type of driving do you enjoy? How do you plan to enjoy the car? The '56 is going to be much heavier and even with suspension upgrades, isn't going to move or handle like your Camaro. If that's ok, you're looking for a change, and the '56 is well constructed, make the swap. Since the car is so far away, I'd make a thorough checklist to evaluate his car once you get to see it up close so you don't miss something.

Thats a tough one! I am a sucker for the tri-5 chevies so I would probably be into the trade.

But as someone said previously, I would want both!

TonyL
06-09-2009, 09:49 AM
I'd probably trade. Tri-fives are worth more. That 56 looks real nice. My fave color combo too. Im with the "trade your wheels" guys here too. It needs bigger wheels to look current. Other than that. Just tell yourself you've *had* a camaro. you can check that off your bucket list.

jy211
06-09-2009, 11:30 AM
Just make sure you check the floors and the support rails under it... I luckily have both cars...so hit the powerball quickly!

I also agree with the bigger wheels...I have 18/20 on my 56' and wish it was 19/20 or maybe 20/20. I'll decide that answer once I get my 55' set on the 19/20 Rushforth combo I have....

Personally I wouldn't do it,probably why he wants to trade into a Camaro.

Man that car really is in the weeds, isn't it...I hope that's bagged and not your ride height, can see why it's not so streetable.

i'd rather have the camaro, but that 56 is super clean. you're pretty much in a win win.

I will definately go with bigger wheels. He is doing all the driving and I told him if it wasnt as he described he will have to drive back home with the 56. He understands and is confident in his car. I really wish I could have both but my wife is getting her new Camaro in a few weeks so it just isnt feasible.

Well....No...wait...wait... Keep the Camaro!

Danny, with your car being supercharged and his not, I would not trade straight up, would need some cash plus the 56 for your car. Do you still have the 47? Is he interested in that at all?

06-09-2009, 12:59 PM

I have a feeling that you'd know pretty quickly whether you wanted to trade or not, probably even on the drive home.

I'm a big tri-five fan but your Camaro just looks like its worth more for some reason.

Not sure why.

I really like your paint and not the '56's, but obviously you do.

If it was me, I drive a bunch of tri-fives first. Find one I really want and then see about selling/trading the Camaro for one.

So I wouldn't settle on this '56 yet.

I hope that helps...:)

I went back and forth, but I voted keep the camaro. They are hotter cars right now. Remember how hard a time I had selling my 55? The market is down on those cars right now, and 60s muscle is doing better. Either way though, make the decision on what you like most. Want a 32 Ford Roadster? I have one for trade... LOL.

I don't see the point in trading cars and then selling the '56 to buy another Camaro. Doesn't make sense. If you realling like the Camaro, you're wasting time and money messing with the '56.

b-man
06-09-2009, 04:17 PM
once you start changing things around and upgrading the driveline and suspension, it really stops mattering what the car started out as.I was simply pointing out the fact that the car isn't a Bel Air model.

And no matter what changes you make to the drivetrain and suspension the body and trim level stays the same, so it is of relevance. The Bel Air models are simply worth more, no matter what trim level anyone prefers.

I personally don't mind trading cars, so long as both parties are happy, and get what they want. Of course it also makes sense that both cars are of equal value, unless there is cash involved. I currently have a guy who wants to trade me his 67 Nova, LS1, 4L60E car for the 32.

Enjoy the ride, do some specing on wheels and tires to make it look good and handle and tuning the Air Ride will make a well thought out setup work that much better. Give Darren or one of the guys over at ART a shout they can help you tune it for even better handling.
I remember on one of the first street challenges they had a shoebox doing pretty good on the course.
Personally I would try something like 17s/18s or 18s/19s but thats just me.
Enjoy the ride buddy, besides look around for some spare Camaro tags and save for a dynacorn body later on and then build an ultimate Camaro later hehehe.

I saw Danny's 56 today, I think he did pretty well. It is a nice car to drive and have fun in (with alot more trunk space). I think the current wheel combo is nice on it, but I know he likes larger wheels. Either way, whatever size he decides on it will be nice.

Looked at your F-Quick page for details on the Camaro.

I own a 56 chevy myself. That being said I think you traded the better car away. The camaro had a B&M charged 408. You got a crate 350 w/ a three speed! They both had full air ride. The 56 interior looks nice. There were no pics of the camaro interior for comparison so I'm assuming an advantage for the 56.

Yes the 56 is more spacious but that is an intangible. The motor, trans, wheels, paint, fit & finish are important to me. I feel all points were equal until you get to the drivetrain where your camaro had the distinct advantage.

But the 56 is cool. I hope you have many years of fun in it. Pull the crate and trans and put a magnacharged 408 LS in it. :1st:

for clarification, I was pleaseantly surprised the 56 has a low mileage 383 and a 700R4 so the drive trains with the exception of the B&M and Trick flow heads are comparible. Now on the fuel door....
