2nd Gen Rim/Tire Poll???

Need your thoughts on the following for my 72 Formula:

A) TTIIs with grey centers or polished?

B) 245/45/17 fronts or 255/40/18s??

C) 285/40/18 rear or 295/35/18s???

D) Any other classic 5 spoke or split-spoke rims you like?

I'm leaning toward 255/40/18f & 285/40/18r CL205s (grey center TT2s).
There's an photoshopped pic of my car attached along with a side shot
of SWs awesome 73 T/A with the 295/35/18s out back.

Let me know what you think...

I say go with the Grey centers, if you go with the TTIIs. TTII's are extremely popular these days, so the grey centers will help you to stand out. Also, go with the 285/40s as it will give you a slightly larger sidewall in comparsion to the front tires.

Check out some other wheel manufacturers, there's a ton of vintage looking wheels that will give you the same look but change it up a little bit. How about a twisted TTII type wheel? Try Colorado Customs, I think the exact wheel type is called the slater but I'm not sure. It's a TTII style wheel with twisted spokes.

I'd say go with the Gray Centers I think they look sweet and give it a more nostalgic look

It that style it's got to be the grey centers. I may got that way for awhile with my bird.

Thanks for the input Ralph! I've probably looked at every rim made in the last few months... I've looked at literally thousands of other rims but they either don't have custom bs available or they don't come in the 18-8 & 18x10 sizes that I'm looking for... that's why I keep coming back to the TT2s... costs, rim sizes and backspacing.

Viper... incredibile interior!!! Where/who did it??? I like the speaker pods in the door panels!

C4... I've actually been leaning toward the polished rims b/c my Formula has a lot more chrome on it than SWs T/A. My car has the chrome trim around the hood/fender and door glass and drip rails
plus chrome wheelwell trim (that I'll probably take off) and the wide chrome strip along the rockers (that I'll leave on b/c of the tabs).

But it looks like the grey centered CL205s are winning the poll...

Thanks it was done by a local shop here in Northern Cali "Cool Customs" the pods and panels and pretty much everything else in there is custom made...I'm more than pleased with their work

I would go with the gray centers as well. I was very much considering them, but last minute changed my mind to the polished centers.

Wish I would of stayed with the gray ones, everyone has the polished ones. :pat:

No problem, Ty. Cost is always a factor. There just aren't enough cheap (relatively speaking) 18" wheels out there that come in the sizes we need. I've been looking at 18" wheels alot lately, and there isn't much under $300 for 8-10" Widths. Post pics when you get the wheels! I love the look of SW's car, so they should look amazing on your ride as well. My next project will be a 70-72 bird, so I always love seeing pics.

The grey center TT's are nice, maybe painted or powdercoated satin black centers would be nicer?? Depends on the shade of color of your car.....

Grey centesrs, ditch the wheel fender chrome, and the rocker panel chrome, get 18x10 in the back with a 295/30/18, and a 18x9 in front with a 275/30/18(or 35 series, i can't remember which it is) Don't get an 8" wheel in teh front

Wow! A 275 up front is a big tire!! Anyone have any pics of a 2nd Gen with 275s up front??? Another thing to consider... :hmm:

i can get you pics, iit isn't that big of a deal, my friend has them on his second gen along with teh 295's in the back. also the hothckis camaro has them with a 9.5 on the front

275 isnt that big of a tire... now a 295 or 315 on the front is BIG!!

Ive got 275s all the way around on my 84 camaro.. Tires do rub the inner fenderwells if i turn too sharp.. but i could have used about another half inch of back spacing on the front wheels..

There is more room on your formula than on my camaro im sure of it..

i had a friend who had 295/50-15's all around on his 77 T/A, granted they were 15's but it can be done, he had no rubbing whatsover. no idea what B.S. he had though

Have similar problems finding the right set of wheels for my 73 formula.

I have been to Vintage wheels works side and i really like the Vintage 40 wheel they have there.

I have some sort of BMW wheels in 17x10 and 17x8 in the front on my car now,but i do not like the style with this wheels.Would like to find a style that represents the era when this cars were made.Some sort of Minelites in 17 and 18 would have looked good maybe,but they are only available in 16 inches 8 inches wide and that is too small in my opinion.

The Trans am owned by SW looks great,but my car has some rust in the quarters,so i have been tinking about adding fender flares made in steel and more offset outwards.Love the look of the Trans am racers back in the old days,so i think that will be my choice.

On your car i would have tried the halibrand looking wheels if i kept the chrome trim,and the gray center ttII,if you remove the trim.

Here is a pic of a 2nd gen with the chrome 17 x 9.5 TT2s with 5.5 BS. Nothing much done to it yet...still waiting on my Baers to arrive and it is in body work right now...but gives you a chance to see what it looks like. Needs to be lowered too.

Yeah I wanted to be able to rotate the tires since I will be driving it a lot.

I am a little disapointed in the BS in front though. When the car is lowered by the Hotchkis and dropped spindles from Baer, it might rub on corners. I might have to put a few spacers in. It will be awfully close. If I were going to use a different size in front, say 17 x 8s, I would have used a 6 or 6.5 bs. Actually...if I didnt plan on rotating them, I would have used that bs on the fronts.

Go with the CL205s...I did on my 65 GTO (18x8s all around...check it out on the vbgarage). The CL205s are just different enough from the standard TT2s that you'll be a bit different. I've recieved many compliments on them. The biggest bummer is they don't make the 18s in a 9" or 9.5" wide rim. You get 8" or 10" only. I'd also go with the 285/40s on the rear.
