Is there that much of a difference to notice a difference between the two?

its hard to. usually not enough to warrant the cost of changing them out

And I am betting that 4.10's won't work on the same center section as the 3.42's....?

im not familiar with the GN rear that you have listed in your sig but i know that 4.10s USUALLY fit. i know that they will on the 8.6" GM 10-bolt. (im used to working on the 99-06 gm trucks)
if they list them in the catalog of where ever you are getting them at they will fit.

Guy I know who had put in 4.10s with his T56 wished he had went with 3.73s. IIRC he stated the first gear was useless.
I've heard a 10:1 overall 1st gear is ideal. That would put you with 3.36s in the rear. Sounds like 3.42s are your best bet.

yes but it also makes it "lug down" with very low rpms in 6th with a t56, depending on tire size. forcing you to downshift when going up some small hills, etc.

I had thought the overdrive ratio was .62:1 on the LT1s, but I found information that said they had .5 in the later years.
In the case of the .5 overdrive, I'd agree the 3.73 gears would be a better choice. But with .62 ratio, the 3.42s would still work well.
